The 14" M1 Max is clock locked to a lower clock speed due to the smaller chassis and battery. To get the full M1 Max 32 core performance envelope, you'll need to go 16" - so the 14" and 16" are _not_ identical.

I do weddings, portraits, families, boudoir, and I’m using the M1 IMac top spec. I do some video too with final cut and it runs amazing. Definitely don’t need the M1 pro or max but absolutely nice to have.

Thanks man. As a pro using a 2013 'trashcan' I was super excited and a bit confused about upgrading to the M1. I do over 20k images a year so yes, the 4TB drive is a MUST. You saved me 1 grand on my decision.

I always say get the best one you can afford because, like a car, the second it comes off the lot it depreciates. And, as fast as technologies advance these days, it should last you more than the standard number of years as long as you take care of it. That being said, get the best one you can afford. I upgraded from a lower level 2018 Macbook Air to the most base model 14" M1 and it's a life changer. I can use the paint brush in lightroom without delays, I can edit video in full resolution (Final Cut or Premiere) very smoothly.......I love it. Perhaps the base model isn't as future proof as the higher spec'd machines but I can't imagine needing more performance. But i'll circle back in 2 years.

My buying decision was based upon a use case for an 8tb storage & 64gb RAM. When I was looking at the Apple refurbish store, the step up in price to get the Max over the Pro was only $200. So, in the end I bought the 16", M1 MAX, with 8tb & 64gb.

One thing that reviewers of M1 Max vs M1 Pro don’t seem to have focussed on: while the M1 Pro on the face of it has better battery life, the M1 Max has a low power mode, which uses less battery. It would be interesting to see a M1 Max (in low power mode) vs M1 Pro to see how both performance and battery life compare. In effect whether, with the M1 Max, you can convert it into an M1 Pro if you want to use it for a long time on battery.

14" 10C/16 1TB slows down tremendously with 1:1 previews in Library and Develop modules.Go for 32gb.

Considering Apple’s market share two things can ha-pen; 1) software firms will quickly optimize for the M chips, 2) Apple will release its own photo software at pro level to push out Lightroom etc

Thanks for the great video! I'm a photographer but i want to get into video eventually. Will the M1 Max 10-24, 32gb and 2tb be enough or should I put the money into ram at 64gb and 1tb. Want to use this computer as long as possible.

In my opinion if you’re looking to use the computer as long as possible I would go ahead with that 64GB. Also, you might want to go with 2TB. I really regret not getting more hard drive space since it’s REALLY fast compared to external hard drives.

Honestly I may end up selling it. However, at this point I LOVE reading on it. So I'm thinking of downgrading back to the 11" and using it for media consumption and reading.

If so what calibration tool do you use? I tried to calibrate the Retina XDR screen on my MacBook Pro but it didn't work with the spiderX Pro :( !

Generally with these newer Apple monitors they're so good that I don't calibrate them at all. And I generally get the results that I want even without calibrating my monitor.

9th and 10th cores never kick in even with heavy tasks. save money here and get 32 gb ram and or 1 tb ssd.

I dismantled my Hackintosh and moved it into a smaller ITX case. Now it's just a normal PC for playing games on. 😊

You can. That's currently how I'm using it right now. I have the BenQ PD3420Q monitor and I connect that to my MacBook by Thunderbolt and it's able to charge my Macbook so I don't even need to use the Magsafe Charger.

Oh no. There's an issue with the GNARBOX? What happened? I did have to update the software on mine recently. I was having issues before updating the software.

@@jbivphotography their apps are not available on iOS (at least not in the UK) and support aren’t responding. As there’s been zero activity on their Facebook group for a while (they have the group set so they authorise posts!?) I suspect MyGnar INC are in trouble or have folded 🤷🏻‍♂️.

The 14 inch MacBook Pro with the 10 Core 16 Core GPU 16 GB of RAM off the shelf version is faster In Lightroom than my 2020 IMac with 64 GB of RAM. This is electronic witchcraft. I’m going to keep this and upgrade the iMac when Apple drops it.

It really is crazy how good it is. I mean it literally made me retire the Hackintosh and use it as my main machine.
