I wish Jeremy Sumpter and Jason Isaacs were bigger names. I also think that by 2003, audiences just didn't expect anything from yet another adaptation of this story, which, along with a lack of star power, might be why it under-performed... But that's also why I bet it took people by pleasant surprise. It's truly a hidden gem.

Peter Pan 1953 takes the price if we’re talking about animated adaptations BUT Peter Pan 2003 is hands-down the BEST live-action movie ❤ The one that I will choose to watch on repeat till the end, it is one of my favorite films ever. I would’ve loved for Disney to make their live-actions like that. Such a shame they’re incapable of doing great movies nowadays.

I think the 2003 one got it right the most, while remaining fairly true to the source material. It also added things that enhance the overall story. And it is visually stunning from the sets to the colourful tones of Neverland. With an equally magnificent score and a perfect cast.

Peter Pan 1953, Peter Pan 2003 and Hook are ALL so wonderful. But Peter Pan 2003 is the one I keep coming back to because of the love between Peter and Wendy. I love it so so much and have fantasized about doing that fairy dance scene with my own fiance who is my fairytale prince. Hook is beautiful especially now that Robin is gone. Peter Pan 1953 just has a special kind of whimsiness that the other two don't quite have. The crocodile in Peter Pan 1953 carries the whole movie on his back. And those of us with any brains at all just pretend that Peter Pan and Wendy doesn't exist.

The 2003 version is definitely the best adaptation of the original story, that cast is simply brilliant and enchanting to watch. But I also think the Once Upon A Tims version of Peter Pan is one of the most interesting in taking the original tale and giving it a new spin that works for the narrative themes the show was telling. Robbie Kay really sells the darker villainous Peter as much as Jeremy Sumpter brings such charm to the 2003 Peter.

The 2003 version is dated but it’s alof lot better then Peter and Wendy and has a lot more heart and not to mention color and scenes and of coarse the Disney’s version of Peter Pan is always fun. Those two are the best along with Hook

Very True, the lost boys are also comedic relief in the book, but they do have way more importance and personality traits than the movie. And honestly, yeah when it comes to Mr. Darling I can totally see that. So in a way hook kinda takes that concept and focuses on it. Good catch.

I think that 2003 is the best (and my favourite) adaptation, and is just one of the greatest films ever made! It's worthy of it's own dissertation! That being said, I do think Disney, perhaps unknowingly, adapted the character of Hook the best. I recently read short story J.M. Barrie wrote about Hook before Neverland including his time at Eton (Barrie absolutely hates Etonians from what I can gather), and he paints him as possibly the most pathetic, ugly, handsome, terrifying character in all of fiction! And then there's the fact that J.M. Barrie himself was the first person to play Hook in games he played (James Barrie, James Hook), you have to imagine how would he have portrayed the character. I suspect that in Barrie's mind Hook represents the worst possible person that Barrie could have been, had he not been Scottish and gone to that dreadful school Eton 😂 I think because Disney were leaning into the comedic side of Peter Pan they actually managed to capture all of this really quite well.

One of the most fun versions of Peter Pan I've seen is the 2000 filming of the musical starring Cathy Rigby. I'm not a fan of the songs but the cast, the sets and the choreography are all a lot of fun. One of the most faithful adaptations I've seen is the 1924 movie. It's the only one that includes Mr. Darling giving his medicine to Nana. On the downside, it annoyingly cuts the scene at Marooners' Rock, making for the least well-developed Captain Hook. It's also distracting that it changes all the references to England to references to America.

The 2000 musical version starring Cathy Rigby uses (with a few alterations) the script and score written for the 1954 Broadway show starring Mary Martin, which Mary did on television three different times (lastly, in 1960). I am a fan of the songs, by the way. Both the Mary Martin version and the 1924 silent version starring Betty Bronson use the stage play's direct address to the audience, with Peter asking for applause to show children's belief in fairies to save Tinker Bell's life.
@theadaptationstationmaster
@theadaptationstationmaster 2 ай бұрын
@@oliverbrownlow5615 I watched the version with Mary Martin first and I thought it was terrible. (Sorry.) The sets were boring. The kid actors were mostly bad. Martin as Peter reminded me of nothing so much as Lucy Ricardo drunk on VitaMeataVegamin. Also, for whatever reason, that version cut the joke from the Broadway production about Hamlet which the Cathy Rigby one kept.

The end of Peter Pan (2003) was lame. But there is a bonus scene where the end is faithful to the book: Peter goes back to see Wendy, she grew up, he is distraught for a minute, he learns she got a daughter and he intends to take her on his adventures when time comes.

While I wouldn't by any means call the theatrical ending "lame," the scene they cut - showing him come back years later when Wendy is an adult - would have made this incredible film soooo much better. The scene in raw form can be seen here on YT. With today's technology, I'd love to see them finish the scene and add it back in, even if just as a post-credits scene.

I strongly disagree that "perfect" adaptations should have a balance between staying true to the original and doing their own things. Adaptions should only stay true to the original, like the Disney films of Alice in Wonderland or Winnie Pooh. People who aren't respecting the orginal 100% might want to make their "own thing" by inventing a original story. The disrespect for orginial stories resulted in a ton of ridiculously bad, evil movies like the latest Snow White adaption with Rachel Zegler, if you remember. The yapping about "outdated stereotypes" is also the worst argument ever against the 50's Peter Pan movie (that is obviousely the best adaption for people who aren't triggered by profession). Pretty sure no native american or who ever is supposed to feel triggered by the 50's movie has a problem with it. With all due respect but maybe you guys can try to be less of the cliche humorless progressive SJW's and put at least some effort into understanding tradtional/older work without dismissing it as outdated.

Great, thoughtful video! My only caveat, and yes this could be argued, is that the actual source you should be comparing all of these to isn't Peter Pan and Wendy, the book, but the original stage play, which is in many ways (especially tone) quite different from the book. You do mention briefly that the play came first, but... I mean it's easy to find in print.

I love how they conveniently left out the woke disaster adaptation of Peter Pan (Wendy).

*Me* 2003 Peter Pan is the best Peter Pan ever *Billy Madison* I disagree, it's a very good adaptation but I think Hook is the best Peter Pan ever *Me* Hook sucks! *Billy Madison* You know something, you suck!

Well damn, what about the miniseries, which was really just two movies? It was like a prequel, and it was awesome

My review is ranked by emotional reaction😂 1953's adaptation made me tear up when the father recognizes the ship from his childhood at the end.❤ 2003's adaptation made me mumble 'I do believe in fairies' as a teen, as an adult and now it does as a mother.❤❤ Hook makes me cry just talking about it❤❤❤ Finding Neverland is an honorable mention, imo❤❤❤❤ Makes me wish it was factual and non fictional. I didn't enjoy 'Peter Pan and Wendy' neither 'Pan' where Hugh Jackman is a pirate.

Say what you want but there has never been a better live action Hook then Dustin Hoffman.

I like to think the 2003 Peter Pan leads into Hook. I know it sounds stupid to think that, but you can’t argue that it kind of makes sense.

For me, the 2003 is both the greatest Peter Pan adaptation and the dumbest. It's got a great cast, great production design, great music, etc. And the script really captures J. M. Barrie's style while also feeling more modern. But the second makes some of the most ridiculous changes of any Peter Pan adaptation, such as Peter and Wendy being pitted against each other in a duel and Wendy reviving Peter with a magical kiss. And it has some plot points that just don't make sense. What is Hook's motive for trying to "seduce" Wendy? He could have just waited and spied on her going back to the Home Under Ground without all that bother.

Taking her from him was a great way to hurt Peter and take away his ability to fly. "She was leaving you because you are incomplete".

@@marialacambra9715 But they present Hook realizing that Peter loves Wendy as a big revelation. "He does care! He cares about you!" (Sorry if I got the dialogue slightly wrong. Heh. Slightly wrong. There should be a Peter Pan joke in there somewhere.)

Geez….that auntie, dude. I found her kind of a stereotype for most of the movie. That typical Edwardian aunt who isn’t a bad person, means well but you know she’s been too indoctrinated into societal norms that she doesn’t hold back when she thinks it’s time for Wendy to stop being a child and start acting like a lady

Best adaptations Worst to Best. 2003: Not bad by any means but it has issues with its tone. It doesn't know whether it wants to be light hearted, mean spirited, or both. The I do believe in fairies part is very emotional though. Hook: A few pacing issues here and there but loads of fun with touching moments and nice attentions to detail. Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates: A fun and criminally underrated show. All the characters have fleshed out personalities, (or at least quirks) the stories are creative while capturing the tone of the book, and it's full of humor and imagination. Disney's Peter Pan/Return to Never Land: Great animation and while not as dark as the book, it captures the magic and fun of the story to a T. A lot of the character are memorable and the humor is hilarious. Also while it's not the deepest movie (or movies) it does have a few layers.
