But I also think the Once Upon A Tims version of Peter Pan is one of the most interesting in taking the original tale and giving it a new spin that works for the narrative themes the show was telling. I think that 2003 is the best (and my favourite) adaptation, and is just one of the greatest films ever made! It's worthy of it's own dissertation! That being said, I do think Disney, perhaps unknowingly, adapted the character of Hook the best. I recently read short story J.M. Barrie wrote about Hook before Neverland including his time at Eton (Barrie absolutely hates Etonians from what I can gather), and he paints him as possibly the most pathetic, ugly, handsome, terrifying character in all of fiction! And then there's the fact that J.M. Barrie himself was the first person to play Hook in games he played (James Barrie, James Hook), you have to imagine how would he have portrayed the character. I suspect that in Barrie's mind Hook represents the worst possible person that Barrie could have been, had he not been Scottish and gone to that dreadful school Eton 😂 I think because Disney were leaning into the comedic side of Peter Pan they actually managed to capture all of this really quite well.

One of the most fun versions of Peter Pan I've seen is the 2000 filming of the musical starring Cathy Rigby. I'm not a fan of the songs but the cast, the sets and the choreography are all a lot of fun. One of the most faithful adaptations I've seen is the 1924 movie. It's the only one that includes Mr. Darling giving his medicine to Nana. On the downside, it annoyingly cuts the scene at Marooners' Rock, making for the least well-developed Captain Hook. It's also distracting that it changes all the references to England to references to America.
@oliverbrownlow56152 ай бұрын
The 2000 musical version starring Cathy Rigby uses (with a few alterations) the script and score written for the 1954 Broadway show starring Mary Martin, which Mary did on television three different times (lastly, in 1960). I am a fan of the songs, by the way. Both the Mary Martin version and the 1924 silent version starring Betty Bronson use the stage play's direct address to the audience, with Peter asking for applause to show children's belief in fairies to save Tinker Bell's life.
@theadaptationstationmaster2 ай бұрын
@@oliverbrownlow5615 I watched the version with Mary Martin first and I thought it was terrible. (Sorry.) The sets were boring. The kid actors were mostly bad. Martin as Peter reminded me of nothing so much as Lucy Ricardo drunk on VitaMeataVegamin. Also, for whatever reason, that version cut the joke from the Broadway production about Hamlet which the Cathy Rigby one kept.

The end of Peter Pan (2003) was lame. But there is a bonus scene where the end is faithful to the book: Peter goes back to see Wendy, she grew up, he is distraught for a minute, he learns she got a daughter and he intends to take her on his adventures when time comes.
@Polymorphia19654 ай бұрын
While I wouldn't by any means call the theatrical ending "lame," the scene they cut - showing him come back years later when Wendy is an adult - would have made this incredible film soooo much better. The scene in raw form can be seen here on YT. With today's technology, I'd love to see them finish the scene and add it back in, even if just as a post-credits scene.

I strongly disagree that "perfect" adaptations should have a balance between staying true to the original and doing their own things. Adaptions should only stay true to the original, like the Disney films of Alice in Wonderland or Winnie Pooh. People who aren't respecting the orginal 100% might want to make their "own thing" by inventing a original story. The disrespect for orginial stories resulted in a ton of ridiculously bad, evil movies like the latest Snow White adaption with Rachel Zegler, if you remember. The yapping about "outdated stereotypes" is also the worst argument ever against the 50's Peter Pan movie (that is obviousely the best adaption for people who aren't triggered by profession). Pretty sure no native american or who ever is supposed to feel triggered by the 50's movie has a problem with it. With all due respect but maybe you guys can try to be less of the cliche humorless progressive SJW's and put at least some effort into understanding tradtional/older work without dismissing it as outdated.

For me, the 2003 is both the greatest Peter Pan adaptation and the dumbest. It's got a great cast, great production design, great music, etc. And the script really captures J. M. Barrie's style while also feeling more modern. But the second makes some of the most ridiculous changes of any Peter Pan adaptation, such as Peter and Wendy being pitted against each other in a duel and Wendy reviving Peter with a magical kiss. And it has some plot points that just don't make sense. What is Hook's motive for trying to "seduce" Wendy? He could have just waited and spied on her going back to the Home Under Ground without all that bother.

Best adaptations Worst to Best. 2003: Not bad by any means but it has issues with its tone. It doesn't know whether it wants to be light hearted, mean spirited, or both. The I do believe in fairies part is very emotional though. Hook: A few pacing issues here and there but loads of fun with touching moments and nice attentions to detail. Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates: A fun and criminally underrated show. All the characters have fleshed out personalities, (or at least quirks) the stories are creative while capturing the tone of the book, and it's full of humor and imagination. Disney's Peter Pan/Return to Never Land: Great animation and while not as dark as the book, it captures the magic and fun of the story to a T. A lot of the character are memorable and the humor is hilarious. Also while it's not the deepest movie (or movies) it does have a few layers.
