I so appreciate Dr. Raja’s lecture- not only the content, namely how the ruler of the Muslim Ottoman Empire saved the Jews of Spain after 1492’s expulsion by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, and how the Jews of Spain, the Sephardim, thrived for centuries in the Ottoman Empire- but Dr. Raja’s gentle persuasive (not didactic, professorial) down to earth way of instructing us and correcting misunderstandings of our shared Jewish-Muslim-Arab history.

Nonetheless the Jews were restricted to lliving in certain regions and had to pay a tax per head for being allowed to remain in the Ottoman Empire, beyond all other kinds of taxes. So, does this constitute coexistence? Not really, in the true sense of the word. No equality there at all. Bayezid was astute - @ 4:40 - and the empire profited greatly from this move.

In my high school history class (and in many schools in the US it is taught) and my sons learned it when taking history classes in 2010. The Sultan sent 8 ships to Spain to get the Jews from Spain in 1492. The Sultan also knew that the Ottoman Empire needed business, finance, and trade to function as an empire since many Moslems were not in these professions except in the military as warriors. It was advantageous to both parties, especially since the Empire needed a strong economic base. After the expulsion, Spain's economy decreased. Also, Columbus came to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to finance his travel west in the Atlantic Ocean to reach India to open a new trade route flanking the Silk Route believing that the Earth is spherical, not flat but the Sultan rejected it however, Spanish Queen Isabella did not. This decision changed the world history. Furthermore, Jews and non-Christians in the Empire were taxed heavily since they were not Moslems and it was protection (protected by the military of the Empire) and wealth taxation. Recent wealth taxation was placed after the creation of the Republic of Turkiye in the late 1930s but mainly after WWII to spread the wealth of non-Moslems to the Muslim population. So, everything was not that cozy.

Thank you so much. The old jewish temples / synagogues still exist in Turkey. There is another historic fact I want to deliver: When the Nazis in Germany began to ban Jewish scientists from the german universities after 1933, it was Mustafa Kemal, the founder of the Turkish Republic who invited the german Jewish professors to come to Türkiye for building a modern high education structure. There have been Jewish sientists and artists of divers professions who were founding and leading new faculties in the bigger cities in Türkiye. The refuges were organized in Zurih/Switzerland. The building of the Turkish parliament, for example, is created by one of them. The huge statues in Ankara are created by another Jewish artist.

This is the last thing I expected to show up for me to listen to. 1492 was also when Columbus reached the Caribbean (not the American continents). I have read some of his journals. His family were part of the people kicked out of Spain, they were Jews. He was one of the ancestors of my former husband, now dead. Few people are aware that he had a son in Puerto Rico, where we were from. He was NOT looking for spices, he was looking for long lost ancestors, (not what Queen Isabella thought) and he found them. He had with him maps that were saved from the burning of the Library of Alexandria. I always wonder where he got them from, since he was not yet born when the Library burned from the second time. Listening to Dr Masood Raja, solved the riddle. He got them from someone who would have been decendant of people who were around when the Library still existed, not in Spain. I had already figured out which of the tribes of Judea some of my ancestors were from. It took me years but the Tainos the people of the Caribbean were decendants, of whom the prophet Ezekiel referred to as "two sticks, one for Judah and one for Joseph". The Tainos were from Judah. I have known it from quite a while but it was not until a few years ago that I was able to know for sure. The evidence was located in a unihabited island of Puerto Rico, Isla Mona, unfortunatelly the British Museum was involved and they stole the evidence and hid it in the "British Museum" where they keep the patrimony of nations. The group included two rabis experts in ancient Hebrew who were able to determine what it said. How I found that out is another of those thing that I don't really understand. But the information showed up and then within hours was gone. I'm an old woman 77 years old but I know for a fact that I have been guided during all my life by Archangel Michael since I was delivered with not signs of life until two hours later when I was interacting and smiling with something no one could see. I am NOT claiming to be some angelic being, on the contrary. I do wonder why me. BUT one thing for sure, I have been protected numerous times from what would have been expected to result in my death. Why me? I learned long ago, that you don't question. I do believe that before I pass away, many things will be answered.

To be fair, the Ottoman Muslims were at war with The Roman Empire, and had just captured Constantinople. This is like Muslims losing Mecca today. During the Muslim 8 centuries of occupation in Spain, the Jewish people acted as the middle men between the Christian elite and the Muslim elite and they became very wealthy. The Christians were treated like lesser beings by Muslims. Many Muslims would either refuse to trade with Christians or apply a tax for the privilege (Jizya). The Jews would represent Christians in all affairs with Muslims. The loss of Constantinople was the nail in the coffin for Christian, Muslim and Jewish peaceful cohabitation. The Christians saw the Jews as conspirators. If we examine the history of the Jews, you will notice that they have always been in lead roles, advisors, administrators or religious figure head (Rome), of all the great Empires; Babylonian, Egyptian, Roman, Ottoman, British, and even America today (look at the top positions in Biden's administration, hence their support of Israel in Gaza). The endless greed of mankind to want to take over the world, be it physically, mentally, spiritually, or economically, has a price!

I did my bachelor studies in Istanbul, Turkey at one of the Gulen movement universities. Where I was taught about this case. When, I expressed this in class during the visit of a Jewish scholar, and a former student of the University, I was honored by the Jewish scholars, but the German protestants teacher, that organized the meeting found it an anti Christian move, and then started a campaign against me to label be an antisemite, or something else like a homophobe as according to them, this is a serious transgression between Jewish and Christian relationships by the dominated Muslim. The Ottomans were always accepting and appreciative of the Jews. Ironic!

Is Bayezid in anyway connected or related to Bayezid Bistami, who is well known to the sufi tradition? And from Andaluz Ibn ‘Arabi from the 13th Century is well known.
@masoodraja4 ай бұрын
Thank you. No, Bayezid Bistami died in 848CE and Ibn Arabi dies in 1240. Sultan Beyezid has no direct connection to either of them.

Every country that is well aware of the history and is enough consolidated to allow itself to think about history in an appropiate timely distance has alot to regret. In the case of Spain and although it is explainable, after the 900 "reconquista" there was the idea to have catholicism installed as the only religion in Spain to strengthen unity. After a certain time the said impoverishment became more and more evident, Spain falling back in the following centuaries on nealy all cultural fields, most of all in science. And not only by the expulsion of the jews but also of the moslems. It is as it is.

Thank you. Yes, but eventually they became a more tolerant and modern society of today. I think knowing history is important for nations so that they keep getting better.

Why were they expelled? What did they do for the king to kick them out ?

Thank you. It was an attempt at creating a purely Catholic kingdom but you can probably read more about it.

The ottomans also saved the Irish from famine by sending potatoes to Ireland even though some of it were confiscated by the British and sold.

Three interesting facts about the inquisition. 1. I believe the Jews lended money to the Spanish crown to sponsor the building and provisioning of the discovery ships in the hope of receiving part of the profits from the discoveries, gold, spice, slaves. When it was clear that the profits would be huge, probably bigger than any other in history, with the exploration of north and south America, large parts of Africa and trade with Asia, the kings decided to exclude the jews. This is my view 2. In portugal today in jewish museums there are 500 year old house keys. When the jews left, they closed their houses and took the keys with them in the hope of coming back one day. They never came back but passed the keys to the next generation until today and recently families donated the keys to the museums. 3. There are still jews today in portugal that never left and hid their religion for centuries. Today there are synagogues and mosques in portugal, a religious tolerant country.

I'm afraid you've made a mistake in the story of the Caliph Omar. He was offered to pray at the Church of the Holy Sepulcher and instead prayed some distance from it. There is a small mosque there that i have been blessed to pray at called the Mosque of Omar. The al Aqsa mosque compound is several minutes walk away.
