Absolutely, dude. I still like them best but that's because the Power archetype is my jam, so I flip around between Roar, Bowser, and DK because I can use a lot of the same tricks with all of them. What I should do tho is look into the other classes for characters who fit into their own category while also leaning close to the Power style too. I can see myself really enjoying Falcon as a fast-paced "get in and combo" guy who can bring the hype just as well as Roar, and Cloud is a Sword who absolutely brings the power I'm looking for with just a little more range. It's definitely given me a lot to think about.

I feel Wolf is one of the best secondaries for a Falco, since even though their attacks are almost the same and therefore translate well, they play completely different and compliment their weaknesses well.

This video is spot on. I have a top 3 set of characters that I use and they are mixed types of fighters. 1. Palutena 2. Mega Man 3. Dr. Mario Palutena is a fast, semi-sword/projectile fighter with a reflector. Mega Man is a zoner who can rush in, if he has to. Dr. Mario is a slow, powerhouse with a reflector. He can zone with pills and rush in and hit hard when necessary. All 3 have different playstyles (with some similarities), and their matchups are different. Learning these 3 characters has helped me learn all the matchups pretty well and I know how to counter pick most fighters.

This was one of the best videos on Smash I've seen in a while. I main Little Mac (I guess he's a speed character), and I'm looking for other characters to play. I've been having fun and success with Zelda, (Dark) Pit, and K. Rool. Though I think Mii Brawler and Swordfighter are fun, too. The one problem with having so many characters in this game is that it's hard to narrow it down to just a few. With a great amount of possibilities comes an equal amount of frustration. (And there are still more characters coming ...)

I think pocketing an echo of your main is fine. You don't need to relearn everything, and it can help with some matchups. Like for me, I main Roy, but I will use Chrom if I feel the matchup suits it. I also use Fox as a counter to zoners, with his speed and reflector. I also pocket Incineroar, mostly as an unga bunga surprise motherfucker thing, it also counters zoners, but in a different way, since I can just sauce up on projectiles and kill them at 40% with an f-tilt.

I'm 8 months out of being relevant, but I don't think Ness is really a full projectile character. His projectiles feel too telegraphed and exploitable to be the basis for a camping playstyle, and I've had and seen the most success on him when you utilize his rushdown ability with shorthop aerial juggles and psi magnet to carry people across the stage and rack up percent with fire as a mixup, and only use thunder when you can threaten either the poke or ko options with that move. I play against a lot of heavys, so juggling is a lot easier and that might skew my read, but it's hard for me to identify him as projectile first.

Tip: if you main a speed character, a swordie is a good secondary because most speed characters don’t have a lot of range and the sword character cover that weakness. For example if you main Pikachu, a character like Shulk or Lucina is a good secondary.

Joker is not a sword by any means. His back air and f tilt are the only good neutral moves that have range that isn't garbage. And yeah, gun and eiha are a thing, but that's kinda like calling melee falco a projectile character. And joker can't kill without a smash attack/unsafe aerial drag down off of a read until about 140 at ledge without arsene. He's really just a speedy kinda thing

I don't think DK is the most advisable secondary. The point of secondaries in competitive play is that cover bad matchups, and to be entirely honest DK struggles in the majority of matchups. I would suggest byleth or Richter as a secondary as they both have some absurdly broken matchups in which your opponent can't do much and they're both quite easy to pick up.

i can say that playing falco and ike would bea pretty good combo, and id like to say megaman fits as well because he is a good projectile character, how ever megaman requires an incredible amount of work to optimize and you might find yourself playing him at a very low level for a very long time, imo if megaman isnt your main, id say he is one of the hardest characters in the game to have as a secondary and its boarderline not worth it because he takes so much time and effort to play him you might be better off playing someone like villager, toon link or dark samus to compliment ike and falco

I find it really interesting how some characters just feel "right" to play and others just don't feel so good. It must be quite a personal thing. I'm a Samus main, but when it came to finding a secondary I had no idea who to go for, so I played my way through the roster. Was really surprised when I found out that Bowser felt really good to play as, as he's not like Samus at all. Wierdly, as a tertiary charachter, after trying a bunch of rushdown fighters, Mii Brawler was the only one I felt I could properly control.

I main Cloud because he has pretty good range/back air and combos, also limit is great (sword) I secondary Mewtwo because he has great recovery unlike cloud, has an amazing ledge guard game, and is pretty technical for example up b canceling at ledge wave bouncing etc.

I’m a Ganon main who’s started picking up Fox, Lucina, Terry, and now recently Sonic as secondaries. I greatly enjoy all those characters too, and watching this video makes me feel a little better about this combo of characters too. My main is a power character, but I also have a sword character and two speed characters, and Terry is also kind of power and projectile character, although I could probably get a better projectile character. I also have fun with Lucario, so I could probably go with him! Since Ganon has so many bad matchups, I’m not really doing it to cover matchups, but for a more diverse list of characters to play and switch to. However, if I am REALLY getting frustrated with certain matchups and just want to really just win because it’s a tournament, once I get my secondaries to be better than just meh, I’ll likely pull them out in bracket. However, I’ll mainly stick with Ganon unless I’m getting frustrated or just feel like one of my secondaries is significantly better to choose

I'm Link/MK and despite Link being a zoner/heavy and MK being more rushdown, with both of them I throw out a lot of hitboxes and try to control the stage and force the opponent to play my game. And that's really not unique to just them either, if it's not throwing out attacks it's vying for a favorable position. I think it just comes down to learning how to use different tools (projectiles, speed, big & powerful hitboxes) to do the same job (spacing, trapping, punishing) so the more different styles you learn, the better you understand the core of the game itself

So I currently main Alph, secondary DK and have a pocket Zelda. DK and Zelda started as comfort picks whenever Alph wasn't working out for me because I mained DK with a Zelda secondary in smash 4. Then I suddently get obsessed with greninja and play only him for 2 weeks straight. The next tournament I go to I have to use all 4 of my characters to even slightly stay afloat because all of them suddently suck. I'm out at 5th after being upset by a gannon, and last time I got second with only Alph and DK loosing to a pichu in winners finals and grands. I guess my point is don't have 4 mains and focus on the characters you have that cover each other well. I guess Alph really doesn't need a secondary, but because my DK doesn't take much work to maintain, I use him when I get flustered by all I need to keep track of as Alph In a fast matchup. I am however keeping zelda for now because the pichu main (and seemingly everyone else at my local) has a Zelda problem. So really I'm free to only practice my main and git gud so now I just need to get my shit together and start practicing and learning to be the bad guy. Because nobody wants to play an Alph in friendlies.

I started to main Falco like literally half a week ago and I think I’ve adapted pretty well, and I secondary my old main, which is pikachu, although until I get a lan adapter, these characters are too fast for the online mode lag, even then I’m not sure if it’s that much better with an adapter But I’ll probably change my secondary because for a while the definition of secondary for me has just been “old main” But third edit now that I think about it, pikachu isn’t even my secondary, my true secondary has been Dark Samus, my first main in this game was Samus. I main Marth and specifically just marth. So I decide my secondary based around his weaknesses. If it’s a less favorable match up like wolf then I switch to Lucina or if it’s finals in a local tournament. There both fast enough to go-toe-to with fox and a lot to other fast melee character, and while heavy characters are a pain for these two. I have enough experience under my belt to say I understand the match up well enough to know what to do. In general I find the most difficulty in dealing with projectiles characters. For me the most success I found are the Belmonts as counters. They are solid picks for a few of Marth/Lucina’s less favorable matchups. They got great edge guarding tools(the main reason I picked them). And complement each other well.(it also doesn’t help castvaina and Fe are my favorite series but that’s besides the point). I also have Ike as a pocket and I’m giving Palutena another shot. I’m actually quite liking Btow!Link and Ken but I want to keep focus on what I have. What do you think?

Alright, for a while my secondary was Snake but his general game plan frustrates me and feels awkward. Plus his weaknesses are too similar to my main. I still enjoy him in casual play but anyone wise to his tricks will absolutely stomp me and I don't feel enough connection to bother advancing past that wall. Meanwhile an Underdog who everyone either mocks or completely ignores who has universal strengths and weaknesses across all matchups and can win anything with enough calculated aggression and reads can win. I relate to that, I main *Little Mac* I have enough passion for this character to practice and get over that wall. Meanwhile I don't have that with Snake. So now I'm unlikely to get gimped by dumb shit, but I'll still struggle if the player themselves are great at mix ups and I can't read them. That's where Snake would come in but now I'm looking for something that fits better.

i might want to use 4 characters, one of each type (besides floaty) 1. inkling, a fast, combo heavy character that i can get used to, as i play speed characters. 2. DK, a good heavy, i enjoy playing him and he can be considered one of my best characters. 3. shulk/marth (can’t decide) they are both swordies, but they both have different styles, i enjoy them both, i am leaning towards shulk, as i played marth for about a year and didn’t have much fun with him. 4. Ness, (kind of a floaty, count him as a projectile character) might make people think i am little timmy who just got his switch for his birthday, but ness is a good projectile character who has good moves, and is a fun character for me.

If you don’t plan on advancing really far into the competitive scene, there’s nothing wrong with using 4 characters, but if you are looking to make it far, you gotta decide on a main and a secondary and maybe a pocket, the more characters you use, the slower you progress

Not fox. Luigi's worst match-uos are against swords. Greninja has great anti-airs, is low to the ground, and is difficult to edgeguard. He does really well against some of the more prominent swordies in the game Roy is strong, fast, kills early, has decent combos, and has the range. If you're going to pick one, pick one of those two. The guy who made the video did a decent job, and while he technically didn't say anything wrong, it was more like a brief overview. Picking up a secondary is very complicated and something that takes a lot of decision making. He didn't go over the actual strengths of any individual character.

What Archetype is Lucas? He's seems best played evasively (like a zoner), but pk fire is really his only reliable zoning tool, thunder/freeze work best to gimp recoveries. Then he has beefy smashs like a heavy, and his tilts are disjoints like a swordie. I've played him off and on for a while but idk what proper playstyle for him lol.

luigi is a combo heavy character who struggles against swords and projectiles, so id suggest a fast swordie like chrom, lucina, or cloud

I main Falco (also not my true secondary bur Kirby is my 2nd best character), and I've decided that for now I would like to grind with only Falco. Once I've reached a certain point, I'll have Lucina and Ganondorf as secondaries. Falco for rushdown (and dealing with projectile users) Lucina for spacing (and also being hard to edge guard) Ganondorf for weight and strength. EDIT: Make that Martha instead of Lucina because even though Lucina is better, I realized I find Marth more fun to play. Also so I have an excuse to sometimes use the name MARS when playing.

Probably Captain Falcon, he’s very similar to Ganon but is much faster and much more combo heavy, though you may struggle against swordies, in that case, it may sound unhelpful, but you just gotta learn the matchup man, work around them

honestly game and watch is one of the characters that falls into his own category, kind of like ness, or ryu, or even plant, ive seen greninja work REALLY well with game and watch, maybe you dont need a heavy, maybe you need a combo character, yes roy is fast and can combo, but not like fox, greninja, or peach, id say watch some pro players play these characters and see what appeals to you, also ask yourself, what match ups do you lose in? would a heavy fix the problem? all important things to consider

Ranged or projectile characters will probably be your worst nightmare. Why not pick a rushdown character? Mac is a bait and punish character that usually has to stay in the middle of the stage and being one of the worst characters in the game has plenty of bad MUs. Maybe picking a character with very little to no bad MUs might be your best bet? Pikachu may work given it can be played offensively and defensively and one of the characters with the least amount of bad match ups. Pikachu also has an incredible edgeguard game and can go very deep off stage. Pikachu is also very combo friendly with many different combo options. A polar opposite of Mac, I think this one might be the best choice. There’s also Joker. Joker is a mix of rushdown with other archetypes but that alone offers more options and flexibility than Mac who is limited on stage. Joker can go a good distance offstage and offers a good aerial game. Fox is another option. Fox relies on Smash attacks for kills and offers great movement on the ground like Mac. Unlike Mac, his neutral B can force a camping projectile character to come to you and also has a reflector to counter against projectiles as well. I don’t think Fox will be too far from Mac in ground game but he relies on getting very close to the opponent and mixing up your approach options often.

I started maining Samus after jumping around for quite a bit. I'm having trouble finding a secondary. I've jumped around quite a bit and so far, I might be landing on Fox or Lucina. Are those good compliments for Samus? I found myself struggling against over projectile characters and I figured those two might be good against them. I used to main cloud and Mewtwo but it feels weird having them as a secondary, to me at least.

I have trouble against Wolf with all of my characters (Cloud, Ridley, and Diddy Kong), and I know they all fall into different categories. What category does Wolf even fall into, and what are decent counterpicks for him? He seems to be in all four, in my opinion (fast with long-lingering hurtboxes, puts on great damage & has reliable true combos, has pretty huge disjoints, and has a very reliable and annoying projectile)
