That blue presage. Beautiful, but I wish they had it in something like 37mm and non-date. I've never understood 40.5mm on a dress watch particularly at the entry level.

Marc, these are nice watches. My only demur is that Seiko have shifted their pricing up so much, that my last 5 purchased watches haven’t been Seiko’s. I do love the brand and I love that you are an AD. All the best-Mark

I don’t have issues w/ Seikos specs. I actually prefer Hardlex for use on construction sites since it doesn’t shatter like sapphire, broken two. Their price creep is the issue. They’re slowly losing the enthusiast market. I doubt they’re gaining more buyers at the malls where they’ll be relegated to. Maybe I’m too old. I don’t equate cost to quality. Just because it costs more doesn’t mean it’s better. It seems like Seiko is betting that people will buy more of their products if they charge more.

I think they're betting enthusiasts will continue to buy based merely on name recognition and pay more just because... Seiko is not accounting for micros like Islander, et al. (and AliX brands like Proxima, San Martin, Seestern, even Steeldive) giving buyers MORE (literally, they come stock with all the mods I'd make to a Seiko) FOR LESS $$$. And of course, Orient, Seiko's own stepchild. The market may correct itself, or some old diehards may pay for the name. Either way, they've kinda lost me. I'll put that toward a Baltic (Aquascaphe Dual Crown, blue) or my next Sinn (556i RS) 😌

The presage gmt is a much better design and look than the lackluster 50m water resist dive style models these are based on.

Nice looking watches here but so exoensive.. why not get a Ratio Free Diver with seiko 4R36 innards, sapphire crystal, 1000m water resistance, helium valve, excellent lume, excellent rotating bezel, etc, for only 175 USD.

Agreed. Seiko is getting more uppity as time goes on. Probably relates to the fact they now own Orient. Soon we'll have to be deciding between the latest Seiko or a Tudor. Glad I don't much care for them anyway.

@islandwatch ya but when brands jack up prices so drastically, they lose a lot of customers, especially when comparable products are available for much lower prices. Ie Ratio the new company founded 2017 which uses seiko innards. Especially this day in age when inflation is rampant and so many people are pinching pennies to put food on the table. Also reminds me of Benchmade knives. Drastically jacked up prices the last couple years, just as their AXIS lock mechanism went off patent... which is stupid because now people can buy awesome knives of similar function for way less money. Screw the brand names, even if the brand names do have nice aesthetics

Seiko definitely has plenty of brand loyal customers and people who have a long term love for some of their designs, and they probably won't struggle with these higher prices. However, I do think they are forfeiting a large portion of their non-loyal customer base, and no one really knows how large of a chunk that is. I've never been into them, really, and I don't really see myself getting into them from now on, unless their qc issues and prices get reined in a bit.

@marc For the ssc927/929/931, could you create a fitted link islander jubilee bracelet (specifically for the 41mm) Also could you make a fitted end link attached to rubber bracket ? That would really sell well since rubber b, crafter blue, uncle seiko, strapcode all do not make any bracelets for this model

👍👍 I love Seiko, but with their latest prices they've lost the plot. I currently buy used, older Seiko quartz watches now and also snap up high spec, low priced watches from Ratio Freediver etc now.

Picked up the Ratio Free Diver 1000m three months ago and it's super duper excellent. Keeps better time than the Seiko SRP777 I had a few years ago, and the lume is better, overall a better watch at a better price.

I have it in my collection since April over here in the EU. Paid retail, €689 in my case to probably even more than the US list price. I do love it though. Gets plenty of wear.

That blue radial sunburst dial presage is beautiful! However, 40.5mm is oversized for a dress watch. Same problem with Orient bambino. Marc, what are their design teams thinking with 40mm dress pieces? Or am I just too classical in my taste of watch proportions?

Marc, you kinda predicted some of what I was going to say, but I actually don't mind some of things you thought (in my case) was moan-worthy. However, I obviously have tremendous respect for Seiko, and I often scroll through their catalogue whenever I doom-scroll all the online watch stores I can think of. However, my problem with current Seiko is that they cannot make a single watch I get hyped about or even fall slightly in love with anymore. The current Alpinist comes close, but I want the Prospex logo to bugger off, ditto with the 5 logo, and on some of the PADI models as well. The Presage seem to suit most of their models, but it puts the watches in a class system, like Seiko is Victorian England but for watches. It's unnecessary. They could rather stamp it on the crown or the caseback. Another thing is their designs, they always design their watches one step too far in my opinion, or one step wrong in some cases. Lastly. Maybe what I will consider my realistic grail watch is in fact a Seiko. And one that you have! Your limited edition LX Springdrive GMT. I soooooo want one. A black and blue GMT watch has never looked so perfectly beautiful before. I know it's a chunky boy, but I will learn to live with it with my 7 inch wrist. Fyi there's exactly f all for sale on chrono24 atm. Not that I current has the coins available, but it is within my realistic budget (albeit up towards the peak).
