My mate bought this watch with the 1861 movement last year after i begged him to get it before it was no longer available. He agonised for 2 years beforehand about spending that sort of money and I told him you will regret it otherwise. I bought mine in 2012 and still love it , a true keeper 😊

interesting take, especially pointing out the potential for them to change the bracelet. I definitely think the 3861 will find itself in regular production but i think they've still got at least one model year left to milk it as a special edition before it enters serial production. i'd also be curious to see if they restrict the production like they have with the 321 in an effort to generate some more buzz. one thing's for sure though, whatever the future for the speedy I'm optimistic it'll be another classic

I have owned 2 caliber 861's vintage 1974 on the first 1978 on the second Their separation from my ownership I will not go into. Your review style is excellent ! I'm not sure where you stand on the Speedmaster overall though. Of course they have evolved as has every other iconic product. I wish I could replace mine with any year at this point as long as it is a all stainless with standard black dial. Thanks for your research !

As I am 50 soon and celebrated the 50th of man on the moon last year. I have pondered the Speedy. And I guess, for me, it has to be the flight-qualified hessalite professional. The tool-watch that has been qualified since 1965 (though the 861 was re-qualified in the 70s, and I never knew how 1861 was qualified - though I guess NASA was ok with the new plating of the 861, since no mechanical designs were changed. An added bonus is of course that the stock SP Pro is kind of affordable while defacto being that modern iteration of "that legacy". I never was much fan of the millions of "tribute memorabilia". Except for the Snoopy, but then I must start to play the lottery. I am ok with the Bulova tribute though - as it is what it is for the price.

Replaced, not discontinued. New movement coming in January 2021 with likely refinements to the bracelet and clasp. Current version discontinued, so grab one new while you can. Still great value.

Excellent presentation style! I enjoy your thoughtful, academic approach toward original content creation. Combined with a calm delivery, and no distracting background music, plus the occasional splash of humor. Your videos are a breath of fresh air compared to other channels that have annoying personalities or voices that I cannot bear. Standard Hesalite for me! I had to swap to an aftermarket sapphire case back though, because the raised hippocampus was painful and left imprints on my wrist (they should have recessed the engraving like they did on the 2220.80, which I find comfortable). Also had a FOIS briefly, but sold it because I didn’t like the dull and lifeless light reflections of the boxed sapphire crystal

It’s an iconic watch but doesn’t move me in any way. I see it in shop windows and never get the itch. There are so many variants on offer I wouldn’t know where to start. Dot on the ninety. Over my head, under my radar. I’ll stick with my Rolex Sub, that’s enough monochrome tool watch for me. Movement, bracelet, case and dial everything just so. I’ve got an Omega at the back of my watch drawer somewhere but never wear it these days and haven’t seen an Omega in over a decade I’d add to my collection. Somebody lend me their speedie Moon watch for a month and I’ll give you my sincere thoughts on how it measures up to the Rolex mothership.

I have both the Sub ceramic and the Moonwatch. My sub is a work daily and Speedy I wear when I feel like it. I don’t love the Sub as much, but it’s an amazingly competent and accurate watch. I wouldn’t recommend the Hesalite Speedy as an only watch, but some do. I recently came across a piece from 1971. The owner had worn it everyday for nearly 50 years with just a couple of services. It’s a bit beaten, but still tickin.

Hi, A very interesting video. I’m looking to add a Moonwatch with moonphase to my collection. I’d love the rose gold version but would rather spend the cash on two great watches and get pleasure from both. I have the ceramic Apollo 8 watch and like it a lot, although I now realise I prefer an automatic movement. My other concern is that the hands are too narrow, making it almost illegible in low light. So, I’m trying to decide whether to go for the black dial or the blue one with matching strap. I was never into moonphases until a fellow enthusiast get talking about them, and now I really want one. My question is: which gets your vote - black or blue. I know I’ll be the one wearing it, but I value the opinion of others. Thanks,

I’d love a moon phase watch too. Maybe my next purchase. The Speedmaster Moon Phase is a big piece, like the Apollo 8 at 44mm, so hope you have the wrist for it. I think if you’re planning on keeping the Apollo 8 (which I love), then go for the blue, if your planning on swapping, go black. It’s nice to have variety in the collection. It’s easy to find fault in these pieces. Look at the Zenith Defy 21....no chance of reading that at a glance, but it’s a great piece of jewellery. Your other bet if keeping the Apollo 8 is the new JLC Master Moonphase. Now that’s a class act.

@@TheEnglishWatch We have similar tastes. The JLC master calendar moonphase is indeed a beautiful watch. Availability might be an issue at the moment though. I have a Reverso travel time which is very smart, but I will sell this one as it’s not got the wow factor that all my other watches have. I see your logic in having a variety of dial colours, although I want to enjoy and admire each watch as a stand-alone piece. So if the consensus was the black or the blue dial was the most appealing then I’d have that one, regardless of others in my collection. Interestingly, my wife, the fellow enthusiast and another friend also prefer the blue.

Mark Espie I’d avoid playing them off against each other. If you post on the Omega Watch Owners FB page what you’re looking for, a dealer may get back to you. Look on Chrono24 to give an indication of prices at grey dealers also for your location and see if you can get that price from a dealer you trust. Goldsmiths UK are offering 10% for online purchases, so that should be your starting price.

I guess it depends if this watch is for wearing daily. I wear and enjoy my 1861 and know the hesalite crystal will scuff up. Are you thinking of owning both or trading one for the other? Personally, if you have the hesalite version and want another, I’d go with the First Omega in Space to mix it up. There’s no easy answer, as long as you do it for your own reasons and enjoy what you have.

Ok. If you’re not a complete space geek like me and prefer the durability of the sapphire version and like the fact you can see the movement, then why not. They’ll obviously be a gap to close financially, and it’s also worth reflecting on why you bought the Hesalite in the first place. Is the reason still valid? Only you will know, so it’s not always healthy to seek validation after the fact as they’ll always be someone with a different opinion. When I put a watch on I haven’t tried before I immediately know if it’s right or wrong for me. Listen to your heart, but make sure you can still pay the bills..!

i Agree. the Apollo 8 is a stunning watch.. Get your cheap speedy's while they last..(This weekend maybe the last chance. ) I think Omega will discontinue the 1861 with the new Snoopy.. (my prediction - Like i said before. . Not limited, Black dial and Bezel. Gold snoopy in the left sub dial. NO snoopy on the rear.. Possibly . writing .. Huston we have a Problem. . Snoopy Gold plated medallion in the box.. with this being the last 1861 speedy ever.(This will help get rid of old stock ) All new Speedy's with 3861 movements with a price tag of £7140 .. Can't wait for Monday The 5th LOL

The 321 Ed White is cool and like its bracelet best, but for $14,000+USD I’d get the ceramic Automatic Daytona with screw in pushers; and have. The Heritage model is very nice and the blue offering looks great. Love Omega’s overall presentation in Speedys.

I am thinking about buying a speedmaster moonwatch for my collection, I currently own the Mark II from 1960 (ST 145.014) which looks good on my 7" wrist, and I am considering either the FOIS or the sapphire sandwich, out of curiosity which one would you recommend, cheers!

Cuestion De Tiempo thanks for the feedback. It’s a tough one, but putting me on the spot, I’d go for the FOIS. The CK2998 case is unique and smaller than the Mk11 you have and doesn’t have the pusher guards. It’s also better value than the SS, although that depends on how much you value the display case back. I’d always gravitate to the Hesalite Professional as my Moonwatch, but the FOIS makes a great everyday choice with the sapphire crystal with its own story to tell. Best advice, I’d to try and size both up in person. Tough at the moment, but I’m sure there’s a dealer out there that will help you. Neither is the wrong answer.

Archer who is an Omega qualified watch maker on Omega forums said the following. The new 3861 looks in some cases like the predecessor. However, engineering wise it's a new movement. Hardly connection to old movement at all. Not his exact words but very similar

Ground up new, yes, but the base architecture remains, hence the sub registers in the same location. It’s worth comparing side by side. They are of the same. I have a lot of time for Archer, but there’s a romantic side to this watch collecting business also.

Its still a Lemania based movement ; a much better and accurarte movement ; yes ; but there is still a big connection to the old movements.
