WHICH SPRINGFIELD IS BETTER? | The Simpsons Game vs. Hit & Run

While Hit & Run contains a detailed and believable (albeit disconnected) replica of the town, The Simpsons Game offers an unprecedented open-world Springfield experience. But which one really puts the "spring" in Springfield? Let's find out!
I wanted to do a follow-up to my Simpsons: Hit & Run review I did way back in 2019, as I felt like I didn't get the opportunity to talk about the many location references to the show. And this eventually blossomed into something more elaborate than initially planned. It's a little different to the usual but fear not - I'll be returning to form and covering some more utterly terrible movie games in the near future. :)

One thing that actually disappoints me though is that you can't play in co-op mode while exploring Springfield. The multiplayer feature only works during the main levels annoyingly. ☹

@@idonthaveanose oh wow that sounds annoying, wonder why that choice was made, I love couch co-op games and trying to find more especially any with a open world element and is split screen instead of share screen, but the game still looks like fun, maybe I'll keep an eye out for that possibility of a review from you to know for sure before getting it, also is it for x360 or ps4? My ps2 died long ago and recently so has my ps3 due to hurricane season of the recent past

I think it's on Xbox 360. I wouldn't really recommend the PS2 version anyway due to the lack of the open world Springfield, although there are several differences in the levels that I actually prefer. It's not on PS4 I'm afraid. ☹

The maps in Hit and Run were originally going to be in one larger single map. But they were under a time crunch so had to abandon that idea

Of course Hit & Run has the fuller Springfield. The 3 maps were the actual levels so of course they'd have way more going on. The Simpsons Game only uses the town as an overworld for dicking around between levels. In that regard, they really went out of their way. I also think it deserves more points for having all of the NPCs be actual characters who stop and exchange dialogue when certain pairs cross paths. You kinda glossed over that but it's a cool amount of detail they really didn't have to include. (H&R is still the way better game, I just don't know if this comparison is fair)

I completely get what you're saying. Hit and Run's Springfield is obviously shaped by the levels' requirements, although most of the interactivity mentioned isn't a necessity - gags are more Easter eggs than anything else (though admittedly they also contribute to the game's overall completion). Either way, it was just fun to take a look at both Springfields side by side, and they both do a decent job portraying the town. I actually went into this video with the intention of highlighting The Simpsons Game, as it's seldom talked about and I still think it deserves recognition. 🙂

​@@idonthaveanose Thanks for the response. I'm not entirely sure I agree things like gags were "unneccessary", though. I'd argue side content is at least way MORE of an essential to an open world game than a linear action/platformer. It doesn't feel like gravy to me, so much as all of the smaller foods surrounding the meat would be a good way to put it. If H&R was just the missions and the world was basically cardboard, people would have cited that as a detrament to the overall product, I think. The TSG overworld as a whole was such a non-essential feature that stripping it from the PS2/Wii versions almost felt as superficial as the graphical downgrade. (Not that I didn't later buy the 360 version purely just to see it. It's fucking Springfield, I had to.)

I actually never played "The Simpsons Game" because I legit thought it was just a game based on the theatrical film (since they both came out around the same time). I do love Hit & Run and it's one of the best GTA clones ever made. Just from footage, I don't think I'm the biggest fan of the Simpsons Game color scheme, it makes things seem bare and unfinished. I mostly learned the locations of Springfield from Simpsons: Road Rage, the Crazy Taxi clone. it had probably 4-5 different Springfield location maps. While you couldn't go inside these actual places since you were always in a car, it was neat to see all the buildings and having to learn which characters go where and where they are coming from.

Had to come back just to say i found a cool detail during my first playthrough of the ps3 version of The Simpsons Game! If you head back to the house hub after bargin bin, you can't leave the Simpson's house as its boarded up while you can hear the aliens shooting everything and people screaming. Pretty extreme way to remind you the world's at stake lol, prob wouldve scared me as a kid!

Both have their own strong suits like the Simpsons game has the show accurate art style and large singular zone for the overworld and hit and run has more interactive moments and a more fun space to move around in a far opposite take than the large accurate yet quieter map of the Simpsons game

SHaR's world was designed to be an open world, but time and hardware limitations let it down. TSG's world has some great buildings and interiors, but it's nothing more than a hub world. The only solution to all these problems is a new simpsons game, taking the best of each game and making the most detailed and accurate Springfield possible.

Oooh, something different. I like a good, open-world map design analysis. It's funny, I only discovered the PC interconnected map mod just recently and it made me think about *a potentially great Springfield game map.* If you took the landmarks from _Road Rage_ and _Hit & Run_ combined, structure it logically like the latter and tart it up with _TSG's_ cel-shaded art style, you'd have something truly amazing to build an actual game in. Interesting point brought up with the maps feeling lifeless, 'cos I find a big problem with exploration-centric _Simpsons_ games is that devs never fully utilise *Springfield,* nor its citizens. It's all set dressing, gag references and cameos rather than, say, making it function for gameplay. I'd quite like, say, a game where you can go into the *Android's Dungeon* and buy stuff that gives Bart new abilities or items. Same for the Kwik-E-Mart and others. Make the town as much of a character as the Simpsons themselves.

Hey Doctor Ink, I agree! At the very least Hit and Run has more background sound effects and interactive gags to make it feel more 'realistic'. One thing I didn't mention is, I also think it's a problem that The Simpsons Game only portrays recognisable Simpsons characters. I feel that the lack of generic background characters makes the town feel a lot smaller and more limited. Anyway, good to see you again, thanks for watching!

@@idonthaveanose there's no need for emulator, you can just either use a ps3 with backwards compatibility with ps2 since it's region free, or just make an american psn acount for the ps3 since the mosters inc movie based game is avialable digitaly as a ps2 classic on that region's store for just a few bucks.

Growing up with the GameCube as my only gaming device, (besides the Spongebob Fry Cook Games Plug N Play) I played a lot of the same games you played and out of all of them Hit and Run is my favorite, even over Paper Mario TTYD I loved this game, sure I beat it tons of times but finding glitches using the cheats became something I did regularly. I wanted to know everything I could about this game since I had no internet and only a cheat code book that contained cheats from over 1000 games for GameCube and Wii. Also you should review the Back to the Future xbox game

Um actually the Simpsons do have the pink sedan. The sedan can be seen in various colors in some episodes like Homer Goes to College it was a brownish colour, as well as in season 1 intro. But you just need to look at the intros beside season 1 to see its actually pink. Homer: NERRRRRDDDDDD !

Oh wow the ps3 version of the simpsons game looks so clean and detailed I'm actually buying the ps3 version tomorrow as I only have the ps2 version without the open world I love the sound of a more open world springield I just asumed that the only difference was the graphics but I am a huge simpsons fan and the ps3 verion looks really clean and clear compared to the ps2 version! Also oh wow they actually made marges canyonero pink like homers car instead of red doh! oh well I guess not everything can be a perfect representation 😞😑

as a kid I had a lot of fun at the camp Krusty area. I use to kick Otto into the burn full of three eyed fish and I did it so much my mum eventually told me to stop XD oh by the way a burn is what we call a river up here in scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 but Otto wasn’t the only Simpsons character that got me into trouble as a kid. I remember in the Simpsons road rage with moe the bartender saying “shut your head hole” I actually repeated that in the taxi going home from primary school and the driver was not happy in the slightest XD that was some sort of swear word to him but..... oh well XD

Hit and run is miles better. An open world sandbox driving platform game complete with Easter eggs and the typical Simpsons humour. It’s a masterpiece. Easily the best licensed game ever. Simpsons game isn’t even close. The humour isn’t nearly as funny and well written (feeling less Simpsons and more pg-13 family guy). The controls aren’t as polished and the world of Springfield isn’t as fun to explore as in Hit and Run. The only reason people would prefer Simpsons game is that they weren’t blessed to grow up with hit and run.

There are a lot of mods for this game now, and I think someone has made Krusty playable somehow. In terms of an official release though, that would be great but ambitious. I do think for a PS2 game they did a great job with it.
