Grievous, in Legends at least, was a monster. In fact, as military leadership goes I'd put him second only to Thrawn in the Star Wars universe. There's a reason why his death was necessary to end the Clone Wars. If Palpatine had tried to end the CIS with him still there it simply wouldn't have worked.
@Bryan-dr5qy6 жыл бұрын
Grievous in Canon is no joke too, he's just more opportunistic and in line with the movies. He is at his best when he can outlast, outnumber, and emotionally manipulate his opponents. Where subtlety was lost he made up for with ruthlessness, though the lack of subtlety did mean that he could be thwarted by opponents who knew how to restrain themselves in the right ways. He managed to beat Obi-Wan and destroy his ship, Depa Bilaba and her troops, he even managed to take over Dathomir and on another occasion beat Maul's forces.

I'd actually rank Grievous above Thrawn for military, the legends descriptions of him indicate he's the best tactical genius like ever. And Thrawn was glorified for being ruthless when general Grievous was far more ruthless than Thrawn ever was, he launched a (short lived but) successful raid in to the heart of the republic and captured the Chancellor, that's like Russia marching into DC and taking Donald Trump only to be defeated by an army of Navy seals half way to England. In fact he lead the successful ground assault to capture the Chancellor. He could analyze all advantages and disadvantages with no mercy, making him a lot better than Thrawn, I'd love to see a grievous stand alone film

I think you were unfair to General Grievous. You left out his former life as a Kalish warlord where he was nothing short of masterful in his use of tactics and strategy. It could be argued that they're two separate beings, but I'd argue that it's more akin to someone growing older and/or changing command styles as well as what he had at his disposal. The base commander is still there -- his brain is still largely the same, but he became more ruthless (and, admittedly, reckless) and better at calculation and personal command, i.e. leading from the front (which is saying something, considering his already fantastic personal combat skills as his fully-organic self). General Grievous should've gotten first on this ranking. He was much better a warrior than any of the other generals and he was the only general to master or become proficient at every single form of warfare, even if he wasn't quite as good in the specifics as General Veers or General Madine.
@robertwadsworth34116 жыл бұрын
All true and I love Grievous personally but you do have to take into account that he did lose major objectives like the battle for Bothawui. Now I'm not saying this to discredit him it's just that he did lose so while if it was just general Veers in command of the entire imperial military vs. Grievous with the entire droid army than yes I'd give it to Grievous but this is for land based generals so Veers with that being his specialty combined with earning his position through sheer skill does make him better as a purely land based general sorry.

Anthony Rodriguez to be fair though no one in the Clone Wars is a good tactician or strategist. The Jedi characters usually only succeed because they have the force. I disagree. Not with Grievous's abilities as a general ( I think he was extremely effective and intelligent) but your statement about the Separatists winning the war. The kidnapping of Chancellor Palpatine was a desperate move. It indicates that the Separatists felt is the only way to win, making it extremely likely they going to lose the war if things continued normally. Also, there was frequent discussion by the Jedi about Palpatine giving up emergency powers after the end of the war. They would not have bothered talking about this unless they both (a) felt the war would end soon and (b) the Republic and position of Chancellor would still exist. In other words, the Jedi though the Republic would soon win.

I'll just toss this out there but when deeming a worthy general it's also important to remember not just his deeds on and off the field but also his enemies. General Grievous fought a war against not only the Jedi but in some cases his own superiors who had never intended his army to succeed, this had it's advantages but majorly gimped his army. I seriously doubt the first order or the rebel alliance would have fared as well against an enemy like the republic and their army of Jedi. General Grievous is worthy of villainous respect for that alone.

From what I've found, General Veers survived in canon, but was severely wounded when his walker, Blizzard 1, was destroyed when a Snowspeeder crashed into the cockpit. Veers was the only survivor, but suffered major injuries to his leg, so he was forever bound to a power chair to move around.

I really didn’t expect him to be kinda known as a “strategic genius” or anything like it, but I think it could fit him, his hate for the Jedi really makes him concentrated on defeating the enemy, because it was personal. I really liked Veers from the moment i first saw the Empire strikes back, maybe because he was obviously very different to the babbling officers we had seen so far (with the exception of mostly Tarkin), and i became a "fan" of sorts after playing EaW as the Empire. I think the guy is a good example of an imperial officer how they all should have been (from an in-universe perspective), and as far as i know he, while being ruthless when needed, was not a sadist and did things the most efficient way, not the most gruesome.
@sithmaster43056 жыл бұрын
I have to disagree with your choice for placing Hux on this specific list instead of a clone, or jedi general. Hux is incompetent, and a fool. He hardly deserves any credit until the canon gives him a shred of it. The 1st place ruling I'd also disagree on the Rebel General was considered the best in the galaxy AFTER the war, and Veers was considered the best in the empire with him but he had not arguably hit his stride, and notability until he had already defected to the Rebel Alliance.
@scytheseven91736 жыл бұрын
Canon will never give Hux any credit because his incompetence is the point. He only got to his position, like many other First Order leaders, through backstabbing and, in his case, a little bit of nepotism. Neither of those things an effective general makes, but such is the way of the dark side. He is intentionally comic relief at best.

Poor Grievous, only 3rd,at least he can consolate himself by stretching the others^^ As for Ecks question, i guess Super-Tactical droids are slightly superior to regular ones but with a capacity to learn beyond any other kind of inorganic? Since they can practice for an unlimited amount of time (unless destroyed) one of them would eventually surpass anything that cannot comptete with it's hardware/processing power (maybe force users strategists if they somehow manage to be completely unpredictable due to how vague the force is to fully comprehend?)

It's worth noting (in relation to one of your points) that in certain legends cannon that Sidous and Dooku also worked to keep the CIS from developing super weapons that were too powerful for the Republic to overcome, so that's something to keep in mind. That manipulation of the war was very much a two edged sword.

General Kalani was an amazing general i think for the CIS. He was able to manipulate kingships and formulate key strategies against the odds, as well as his clarity and independence, seen when he didn’t allow the shut down Command of his droids believing it was a republic trick.

It's too bad, though understandable, that any kind of convoluted tactics in space and on ground are pretty much exclusive to expanded universe content, be it Legends or Disney-era. Even Rebels, which had Thrawn in it, kept things simple or "vaguely implied to be complicated but never seen" during battle sequences. Looking at your opinion of this factions compared, it's really telling that, in the films only, the bottom two are major characters while the top two are pretty much just background extras. I know you'll get to this in the finale of the Vong sub-series. Won't stop me from going through the motions though. Anyways: Can you breakdown what is by far the largest space battle in the entire franchise? *The* *Battle* *of* *Yuuzhan'tar!* I have made this request: one-hundred-twenty-two times.

A Super Tactical Droid would be somewhere between Hux and Grievous. On a side note, a T-Series Tactical Droid would be well below even Hux. Hux wouldn’t bluescreen if his prisoners started attacking him while he was threatening his enemy.

General Hux only got to where he was because of backstabbing, it's meant to show the difference between the old loyal Imperials like Captain Canady and the new guys like himself and Phasma. The only thing he has going for him is that he pushed for technological advancement, which is why Snoke even considered having him at the top. When it comes to that he's pretty sly but when it comes to military tactics he is best served as a technological supervisor, the best he could do is on direct capital ships engagements.

The problem with Super-Tactical droids is that they fail to account for the unpredictable. They assume the enemy will take the most logical approach and focus on breaking such an advancement. But when an enemy attacks in an unorthodox manor, such as distractions or small-unit incursions, they can become easily confused and, for lack of a better word, “break” under pressure.

@shapesnatch13416 жыл бұрын
well with a few programming corrections (particularly in underestimating opponents) a super tactical droid could easily be number one
@samspeed62716 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with your rankings. Hux is useless as a tactician, as demonstrated multiple times in the films. Grevious is a blunt instrument who just throws battle droids at the Republic, lacking any real tactic. Madine is a good leader, knows the ins and outs of covert operations. Small commando teams, big results. Has many successful operations accredited to his name, such as the job on the DS2's shield bunker, which lead to the end of the Empire. Veers is best though. When someone has messed up and created a less than ideal tactical situation, Veers can still reign victorious with ease. Has a brilliant track record of successes, even when given situations that are seemingly no win scenarios. The concept of a computer tactician is interesting though, as it can process far more data than a human, allowing it to make a decision when it is better informed with more data. However, it is the sum of its programming, so it can become predictable. Computers also tend to lack creativity, so you won't get any strokes of tactical genius like you would with Madine or Veers. Basically, even a Super Tactical Droid boils down to the simple fact it is a glorified chess computer, however advanced it is. Great video Eck. Have a good weekend.

I mean The Republic and The Confederacy since all of the Generals are Jedi and the other had a Super Tactical Droid/Alien that was able to kill 4 Jedi Knights.
