He just uses a T-70 with an afterburner, which allowed him to avoid shots from the Dreadnought's cannons.

From my admittedly limited knowledge, the Imp-II had it's point defense removed because on the Imp-I they were absolute garbage. Most of the anti-starfighter ability of any ISD comes from the TIE fighters it has, and given how bad the PD's were, it makes sense to specialize the ISD to a more dedicated fuck your cruiser style ship, which were the cornerstones of most Rebel fleets. That being said, it does have some pretty serious design flaws(I'm looking at you octuple-barbette locations) but as a capital ship, it is indeed an improvement over the OG ISD-I.

A capital ship is generally a leading or a primary ship in a naval fleet." okay, so the GR75 isn't exactly primary in terms of its combat capability but the rebel alliance seems to rely on mobility so much for their primary fleet(s) that the GR75 just gets thrown into combat anyways, because they're relying on everyone fighting just to survive - the only stupid part of this is they didn't throw 10-20 turbolasers onto them, and another 10 laser point defenses onto them for proper combat roles

I think the GR-75 dont belong in this list. It is perfect designed for its purpose (cargo transport). The Rebel Alliance just dont use it right.
@casbot716 жыл бұрын
The GR75 is a well designed ship for it's purpose, which is to carry cargo. The fact that it was used for something it was not designed for does not change the validity of it's original design. The 747 is a great passenger jet but a lousy air superiority fighter. If some idiot tries to use it as such that doesn't take away from the brilliant design work that went into it. Now if the GR75 had been designed for pitched battles that would be different. That would be like designing a general purpose space dominance ship meant to patrol systems by itself that couldn't deal with starfighters and had easily identifiable and undefended weak spots, it didn't fulfill its design purpose.

The Lucrehulk freighter was the subject of this video. If you are talking about the Battleship, it's more like you take a huge container ship, strip it off everything, put some military grade equipment and a flight deck on it, put some badass weapons on it and let it sink all 4 of the Iowas at the same time. Even 40mm Bofors wouldn't save them. It might be called a Battleship, but in the end it is a carrier. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the exposed bridge on the ISD is not a design flaw. its there for the same reason bridge's were on real life battleships: situational awareness trumps a well protected command bridge. Plus, with shields, the bridge is not really much weaker outside the ship than it would be inside. As long as battles are taking place within visual range where you can see the entire battlefield from one viewport, which seems to be how things work in star wars, an exposed bridge makes complete sense. no the part thats really dumb is the exposed shield generators. Those certainly have no reason to be outside of the ship.
@zachzavelsky83024 жыл бұрын
It actually kinda makes sense for the emperor’s ships to have these exposed shield generators. They may have put them there as a brag, like how they see it but can’t get it, overall fills the emperor’s persona of overconfidence, which I mean we all know where that leads him...

When i looked the thumbnail, i guessed the Lucrehulk would be the best of the 4, just by the main design. First off, it is the only one that has no direction, it is not pointed anywhere. This is important, because in space there is no air resistance, which means you don't have to make triangular shaped ships like the destroyer or dreadnaught. Instead, it is more useful to have a spherical ship that can protect from all sides, which the Lucrehulk does perfectly. It also is a very symmetrical ship. Again, spherical shape is good because it means there are no weak points on the hull. The troops and crew inside also have to travel shorter distances to go from one part of the ship to another, in this case the ring shape is a nice design feature.
@lenkagamine41454 жыл бұрын
the triangular design isnt for aerodynamics, its to allow it to fire all guns directly forwards. A lucrehulk cannot do that. I like the ship dont get me wrong. but the basic shape of a star destroyer makes perfect logical sense.

EckhartsLadder, something that is almost never discussed when talking about SW universe is that SW creatives tried to relay a faction philosophy through ships & fighters design. Especially in the original trilogy and the Empire/Siths. Star Destroyer are tools of fear & domination. Massive, with an all out attack mentality. Same of the Tie-Fighters. They are meant to show Sith's approach, disregarding defensive feature for a high risk, fast & lethal approach. And it works : The empire look scary and aggressive. Their capital ships are freaking arrows ... directed at YOU! Regarding the rest of their design flaws, it also work with the story aspect. Like any good mythological monsters, they can be defeated by a hero using his brain instead of his strength. That's a core aspect of heroism : Defeating a stronger foe by outsmarting it. In the specific setting of SW original trilogy, that meant exploiting design flaws, which in turn called for said design flaws.
@marcusscott53635 жыл бұрын
That's the other thing - we talk about how illogical the ISD II with its turbolaser-forward design is because its (supposed) primary opponent is the Rebel Alliance, of which has an edge in advanced starfighter designs. 1) WE DON'T KNOW THAT - arguably the primary opponent of the Empire is the rest of the galaxy, and the primary purpose of the Imperial Fleet (and Tarkin Doctrine) is to keep the galaxy down and subdued (not even necessarily to actually crush all resistance - some conflict and insecurity creates fear, which favors the state, law & order, and the status quo politically). Brings me to point #2... 2) Capital ships, in a space navy or otherwise, are symbols of power, prestige, and state sovereignty, because they're going to be objectively expensive to maintain in fuel, maintenance, personnel manning, etc. If the Empire has a fleet of thousands of the most badass capital ships flying around, imposing order and international sovereignty around the galaxy because no other political entity can stand up as a legitimate sovereign entity and challenge the Empire conventionally... then the Empire has won the political battle. That's the purpose of the ISD. NOT to tactically defeat the Rebel Alliance, but to subdue the galaxy. That's why there are so many ISDs, and that's why the form the core of Imperial battlegroups, and that's why they're built the way the are. That's the strategy the Empire needs to maintain sole superpower, galactic supremacy. It's a strategic-political choice, not a tactical one.
@wolfgangkolber3814 жыл бұрын
The Empire has money and men to spare, for the most part. Most members of their fleet are expendable, with only a few key targets, including high-ranking personnel, that are actually vital. Consequently, most of their constructions were designed to inspire fear. The Death Star, obviously, essentially does what a well aimed asteroid or a large fleet could do: make the planet inhabitable and wipe out its population. In fact, we hear this mentioned in the original Thrawn Trilogy, where the Noghri homeworld is made almost entirely uninhabitable by accident. The Death Star is made to inspire fear, not destroy planets, which in itself would actually end up being detrimental to the Empire by depleting its resources. While the notes made on the Lucrehulk were valid, I would like to point out that most of its deficiencies were eventually fixed. It is also important to note that its maneuverability, or lack thereof, wasn't a design flaw in the first place. It's original purpose, as I'm given to understand, was to blockade planets and force them into compliance, or to block travel in general in order to force a fee of some kind. Similarly, while the droids may have been horrid soldiers, they did on many occasions swarm their enemies successfully, and don't adhere to the biological limits of the clones. They were cheap and easily mass produced, and, as noted before with the Lucrehulk, performed their duties well. They were made as garrison units. The Super Battle Droids were, in truth, the proper standart infantry unit for the CIS, with their cheaper counterparts occupying the clones' attention while the Super Battle Droids did much of the damage, with the assistance of starfighters, bombers, and Droidekas. I would also like to point out that the CIS starfighters, bombers, etc. were actually fairly good. Similar to the Empire's tactics, the Mandater IV would have been made to inspire fear rather than be used to actual effect. More worrying, I think, is the fear that the rebels' direct towards it. How do they lose against something like that? How do they not detect it coming from hyperspace an hour or two away when it's so large?

Marcus Scott yup. People seem to think the empire was built to fight the rebels but really they just wanted to maintain control and order. The rebels scavenged what they could to fight and counter them

What you are all ignoring is that plot armor favors the rebels. If you actually read books written by a competent author from the expanded universe, you see the ISD as it truly is. The rebels AVOIDED fighting them at all costs, because they nearly always lost. It was a few key events that gave the rebels victory, not any kind of military advantage.

They’re meant to dish out a decent amount of firepower, but are mainly meant to get close to enemy ships and draw fire from capital ships. It is one of the most heavily armored ships so it would do well at this. Hell, if the hanger is big enough you could even pull of boarding actions with it.

The Droid Control ship was mainly a modified Trade Federation heavy super-transport modified for droid combat operations So it was good at its designed role - command and control. The GR-75 wasn't really a capital ship as an overly used and modified medium bulk transport. They were even used as anti-Star Destroyed kamikaze ship loaded with explosives back in the old RoTJ novelization from the 1980's. The ISD's biggest weakness was being overly designed to support the Tarkin Doctrine and didn't take into account any lesson painfully learned during the Clone Wars about fighter warfare. Hence the lack of decent point defense The Mandator-IV wasn't really a bad design so much as it was an overly specialized design - heavy fire support and saturation bombardment. I mean beyond its big orbital bombardment cannons, it only had 26 dedicated point defense cannons and 1-2 squadrons of TIEs vs the Resurgent class' 2 full wings (6 squadrons per) of fighters plus over 40 dedicated point defense turrets on a smaller hull. The Resurgent class' weakness - Hux's ego.

I'd say the Mandator IV in TLJ was woefully misused. It's intended as mobile artillery, to be screened by other ships and star fighters as it picks on enemy capital ship formations from extreme range. From a planetary assault perspective I think its main function is to puncture planetary shields - a lesson I think learned from the Hoth attack, but a lesson learned the wrong way as you explain in your video on that battle. Rather than employ better tactics they just built a new warship. Hubris cost the First Order its dreadnought in TLJ - they simply weren't expecting a strike of the type Poe led.
@god84836 жыл бұрын
mccpcorn2000 I think the Mandator IV is more of a space battle weapon than ground assault. Poe called it a “fleet killer,” implying it had the power to deal devastating amounts of damage to ships easily. I think it’s intended more as a extremely powerful glass cannon, using it’s giant guns to take out enemy flagships and capital ships, relying on surrounding Resurgent class destroyers to protect it.
@littlechickeyhudak5 жыл бұрын
Exactly. They used their most physically imposing ship, thinking they would just scare off the pitiful resistance. I'm writing a sci-fi/first contact story currently, and at one point as humans are joining this alien race in the galaxy, they realize they need a galactic police force. They opt for ships that appear to be very powerful, dangerous, and badass, while sacrificing a lot of functionality. They figure that if the fleet looks badass enough, it should deter crime to begin with. Later, though, an intergalactic war breaks out. Without a proper military, humanity's contribution to the defense of the galaxy is their police force, and the attacking extraterrestrials take advantage of the large design flaws to decimate most of the fleet

hairypancake: Sort of, yeah. Eck mentioned the exposed bridge on the Star Destroyer series was (one of) it's biggest weak points, and the Executor obviously suffered from this. However, it could be argued that the ship "survived" the A-Wing; the A-Wing just caused a temporary (maybe) loss of helm control. Crashing into the death star at full throttle killed the Executor. Other battles show how tough an Executor-class is to kill, unless you can score that critical hit. The Mandator IV just has a giant glowing bull's eye at its center of mass. You could kill it with a space suit and a DL-44. Edit: the Executor also looks really, really good. The Mandator is an 8000m slice of durasteel pizza with a few piddly PD guns, and a couple cannons from a Warhammer 40k Battleship stuck on the underside.

I have two main problems here: 1) Capital Ship discussion which discussed GR75's and not MC80's. 2) Identified ISD2's lack of point defense (like TF Ships) but completely ignored the fact that ISD2's carried Gozanti Cruisers and as many as 72 TIE/ln's or TIE Interceptors, yet still made it seem like a solo ISD was without support. Militarized MC80's made the forceful keel of the Rebel Fleet, where the bulk was comprised of Nebulon-B's and Corellian Corvettes. Liberty and Independence Type MC80's (and the very hard-punching cousin, the MC30c) had focus on shield strength and anti-shield weaponry, making them a strong contender for at least most durable capital ships in Star Wars. ISD2's operated without a supporting fleet because they carried a small support fleet with them. Particularly when the ISD was first created and T-65's were less common, the TIE/ln was more than capable of fighting the Rebellion fighters, even while outnumbered (which rarely happened). After the widespread utilization of the T-65, which were superior to the TIE/ln in maneuverability, defense, and weaponry, the Empire turned to the TIE Interceptor and TIE Phantom. Interceptors soon replaced TIE/ln's on ISD's solely because the ISD would operate without a support fleet. If you want to focus on the ISD's most significant weakness, you have to focus on it's greatest strength: it's shape. The triangular design of the hull was purposed to allow the ship to bring both sides of the ship's weaponry to bear on a target directly in front. This also means that by flanking, you reduce the firepower against you by half, like with almost all other capital ships, but by flanking to the rear, due to the sloped positioning and close positioning of the main battery guns, the ISD could only bring its ventral or dorsal extremity turbolasers to bear. That combined with limited turning radius due to lack of differential thrust, you have yourself a major weakness.

CommissarTommy22 Eh, it’s not necessarily inaccurate. As a carrier, the Lucrehulk is great. However, the Lucrehulk’s shape means that only a small portion of its armament can be fired at any one target at any given time. So even though later Clone Wars-era models were heavily armed, the fire arcs of the emplacements meant that only a small number of those batteries could fire at any given target. This is where the triangular design of the Star Destroyer is actually superior as it allows almost every weapon battery to fire straight ahead at a single target.
@CommissarTommy226 жыл бұрын

And if you read any of the books the Rebels considered the TIE fighter one of the most dangerous fighters of the era.
@maarten92724 жыл бұрын
@@tragedyplustime8271 Yes, the books. In the original source material, which is what I go by, the tie fighter was both underpowered, unshielded, had a short battery life and no life support. If 5 tie fighters are lost for every x wing, and the rebel capital ship has more fighers then you're guaranteed to lose.

In defence of the the Mandator IV, I'd compare it to a railway gun from WW1 and WW2; it's very good at doing one thing and not much else. I'd hazard a guess the purpose of using it rather than a half dozen SDs is that it could probably overload planetary shields on its own in the opening barage, or fire right through a fleet from standoff distance with its shots tearing through all but the largest of capital ships forcing the opposing fleet to close in to engage with its escorting SD, possibly leaving whatever they were protecting open to a flanking attack, or scatter and lose the benefit of overlapping fields of fire. I'd say the First Order needed it to break sieges on planets quickly rather than have them drawn out into months of blockades tying up whole fleets.

The weakness of the Star Destroyers you mentioned is offset by them carrying several fighter squadrons.
@lucas101046 жыл бұрын
I don’t think you can actually say that you can do anything the Mandator could do with a bunch of star destroyers. If the mandator has been active during the Last Jedi, the resistance fleet would have been destroyed. Yeah, it’s not as useful in all scenarios, but it’s role seems to be long-range bombardment and, in space conflict, essentially sniping. In that role, it would likely work very well.

My issue is that the GR75s weren't used as capital ships...they were used as support for capital ships. Badly but still not used as capital vessels. They were another part of the fleet. Being in the fleet and kinda physically big compared to a fighter doesn't make it a capital ship. Same reason a CR90 Corvette wouldn't be a capital ship, of even a Nebulon-B Frigate. It's part of the support fleet yeah, but it's a frigate, not a capital vessel. GR75s were used more as a frigate level vessel at best.
@elijahsellers37275 жыл бұрын
Lucrehulk vessels were also legendary for their heavy shields. The model in question was a fairly early iteration, focusing mostly on concealing it's weapons as they were illegal at the time the Invasion of Naboo. It did have major issues, but it does at least have somewhat of an excuse.

You also have to remember that ISD’s weren’t made to fight the rebellion but the Yuuzhan Vong, the needs for the design were different, granted it obviously doesn’t cover all the flaws of the ship

*sees ISD II on list* Ah you’re poking fun at the Imperial engineers who “forgot” to add quad laser cannons to the design.
@chrissonofpear36576 жыл бұрын
Well, I STILL tend to think they have SOME light lasers somewhere, going by screen caps and frames from the Empire Strike's Back, Falcon chase. The fan made TIE Fighter anime also shows what those light lasers probably looked like, unless those are another turbolaser variation.
@nathanzhao12196 жыл бұрын
I find it unrealistic for the ISD II to have no point defense system. It probably has some light laser cannons, but not enough to deal with a squadron of starfighters. That’s probably why ISD IIs have a compliment of starfighters.

A couple things about the Mandator and the First Order ships, the Sequel Trilogy has a “bigger is better” concept and the Mandator is like the USS Vengeance from Star Trek: Into Darkness, it’s mainly for making a statement rather than serving a practical purpose.

I feel like the problems with the ISD aren't necessarily with the ship itself (except of course things like the bridge), but more how incompetent officers in the Empire use them. The Imperial-Class was a very well-rounded design in terms of ship-to-ship combat and supplies and starfighter carrying capabilities. The the star destroyers could dish out swarms of TIE fighters along with a few more specialized variants like bombers and interceptors, instead of using point-defense cannons. This in turn allows for more space to be taken up by anti-warship turbolaser cannons to decimate any ships that are used as support for the starfighters by the rebels. However, the many very arrogant officers in the Imperial Navy thought that the Alliance Navy was so below them that there was no need to worry about their starfighters, which resulted in criminal under-use of the TIE fighters at their disposal, and an over-reliance on much to big and cumbersome turbolaser cannons. That's just my assessment, though.

Mammoth mk 3 mounts more firepower than the other two combined and that's before the railguns upgrade. The Baneblade stands no chance. Honestly the tanks from 40k are kind of ridiculously impractical and horribly designed. The only area where 40k lacks in ridiculous overpowered everything is in armored ground vehicles ironically enough.

It's also worth metioning that in the Star Wars Lore, the Lucrehulk Class Ships where built to be frieght carriers, and the Trade Federation modified them to be used as battleships and droid command centers. In other words, Lucrehulks were not ment to be used as battleships, but the Sepratist made it work, and they did a good job at it.

Is that really much of a fight? Sure, the orks are numerous but that is just more food for the flood. I mean, the orks have nothing that could deal with the flood. The Forerunners would have pawned the orks with little effort and even they got thoroughly defeated by the flood.

Orks literally work on "it works if you believe hard enough" so it's a total crapshoot of what they could or couldn't do in that situation. They're also fungus/spore based so the Flood would never fully get rid of them short of destroying the planet they're on.

I think the star destroyer designs were not deeply considered with space fights when they were created. The movie directors simply made traditional battleship design on a triangular hull and made it fly. Considering space fights are three dimensional fight with no up and down direction, having main turrets only on its upper deck is a design flaw. Even ww2 era bombers have dorsal defense machine guns even they do have up and down direction. In space, fleets can encounter upside down toward each other. Star destroyers cannot fire main cannons at half of the angle. This is even a bigger problem considering some of them function as landing vessle. The original republic era star destroyers actually land on surface and deploy troops. This means the ship gives fire support on the destination until they land there, clearing out the landing spot and near areas. But they cannot shoot downwards. When they are in the air for bombardment, the ships can flip and shoot up at the ground because they have their own in-ship gravity system, but fire support when landing is still impossible since the ships are not gonna land upside down.
