One thing you kind of missed about the droid Tri-Fighter was that their droid brains were actually very advanced, and they could actually learn during engagements (although that is not as easy to come by unless you've read the Revenge of the Sith novelization). Otherwise, great vid, and I wasn't actually expecting the winner to be the one that it was, simply because of the flaw you found with it.

They had insane reaction times, and could pull off maneuvers that would leave an organic pilot as a paste on the wall of the cockpit. The Tri-droid is hands down the best. I would say that the Nimbus V-wing deserves a higher place than it got; I would swap the V-wing and the A-wing. If for no other reason, the A-wing was extremely unreliable and the V-wing had few reliability issues.

Predictions: I cannot imagine the Tri Fighter coming anywhere other than first: 3 independent thrusters and no concern for organic pilots give it the best speed and mobility, it's the smallest ship in the list, and unlike the Vulture Droid it's explicitly described as being "Intelligent" rather than stupid. It's even apparently relatively bulky for an Inteceptor. Then there's the frankly baffling level of firepower it carries: Somehow they managed to fit 6 missiles on it (I suspect the Colicoid Creation Nest are employing Time Lords), it's centrally mounted main weapon is described as a "medium" or "heavy" laser cannon (ie. it's unusually accurate and powerful), and then, because the Colicoids don't know the meaning of the words "stop, they're already dead" there's also a light laser cannon on each of the 3 arms _mounted on rails so they can be independently aimed._ It's a miracle that the CIS ever lost a space battle. I'd imagine that the reason why the CIS lost any space battles was due to the Tri-Fighter being a semi-rare and uncommon fighter droid within the fleets. It was likely an "elite corps" type of fighter where only a handful of them were present per capital ship being accompanied by massive swarms of vulture droids. It's basically the Super Battle Droid of star fighters; a unit that excels in every category but is reserved as the bosses of giant swarms of much weaker and cheaper underling fighters.

Incidentally, related to your comments in the other thread, your own references here logically undermine the idea that the weapons on an interceptor are all that powerful. if they were as powerful as you're claiming elsewhere, the armor and shields of an X-wing (which your reference claims help it out against interceptors) would be meaningless, because it would get one-shot anyway. Defensive strength doesn't matter in contexts where a single shot can take you out regardless of shielding or armor. If an interceptor can one-shot anything from a B-wing to an A-wing, to taking out small capital ships in a handful of hits, then a reference to the X-wing's shields and armor in relation to helping it take on Tie Interceptors would be pointless. Basically you're making contradictory arguments, or at the very least, claims your own sources don't seem to logically back up. Being the 'best' interceptor is a far cry from being so powerful you can take out shielded targets in one hit. That kind of strength is neither logical, nor required. Even if it takes 40 hits for an interceptor to destroy an X-wing, if it can average 2 shots a second from it's 4 cannons, and is vastly more maneuverable, that's still more than enough to make it extremely dangerous to X-wings.

Don't forget the 360 degree swivel on the A-Wing's cannons. That's a very significant threat for any enemy that does manage to out maneouvre one and get on it's tail. Though I can't remember if these are a standard feature or a modification

Adarsh lal The worst part about it is that even the Star Wars Producers never think of it, i mean, imagine how effective it would be to just launch 12 or 18 Buzz-Rockets at 1 Venator? That'd basically mean that a group of 3 Tri Figthers can take out an enemy capital ship and then still endager all of the enemy figthers and bombers. I hope someone at Rebels is creative enough to create a subplot where some Tri Figthers appear and are used with those Rockets to simply destroy an Imperial I, because i'm sure that after 10 minutes even the Buzz Droids from the 6 Rockets of a single Tri Figther would be able to at least heavily cripple something of that size, if not even make it inoperable.

Otto Honkasalo I remember a 500 comment long discussion about this on another video 2 years ago (can't remember it's name). Some of the main arguments against your thesis were the use of the blue shadow virus as a bioweapon, the usage of various Sith or bounty hunters to assasinate or kidnap various politicians (and children, in one case***) and them being Sidious' puppet all along. Personally, I think that both the Republic and the Confederacy were operating in grey areas, sometimes good, sometimes evil (you could say there were Heroes On Both Sides). What a faction do during a war, is contingent, conditioned (that doesn't excuse them, and we can judge them about it, and say strongly that other means were better, or even good) ; the Separatist were fighting against the most powerful state of the galaxy at the time, one can easily argue that they acted so harsh, because there are not means to spare your enemy, when you want to defend your very rights and independence. Their legal foundations were just, so was their cause, and so their war, not the bad means used during the war.

The TIE at #3? Come on, the TIE pilots didn’t see their fighters possessing no shields as a flaw. In their view, it meant they had a true challenge to overcome and that gave them a drive to push themselves to the absolute limit during training sessions to hone their skills to the best of their ability. It’s also the coolest interceptor by design, in my opinion. Neither the V-Wing or A-Wing, impresses me by design or by name. I do however, like the Separatists’ Tri-fighter.

Lacking survivability features would actually make for WORSE pilots over time. Anyone can practice as if they have no shields in training, but only pilots that survive can learn from actual combat missions. Experienced veterans will better understand their opponents, know unconventional tricks/tactics not covered by instructors, and have more overall experience than recruits fresh out of the academy. Sure, the veterans can become instructors and potentially teach these things to recruits, but you're not going to have any experienced veteran instructors if they all die after a few engagements. Plus, any 'experienced veterans' you do end up with won't have any experience learning from mistakes that they died from.

This comparison is faulty. In order to establish which is the best interceptor, you need to define what an interceptor is, and then ask which craft best fulfills the role. In real-world terms, an interceptor is an aircraft (or, in this case, spacecraft) that is intended to defend against enemy bombers or other strike craft. It must quickly launch, be able to maintain CAP for extended periods, have enough firepower to swiftly bring down approaching targets, and have the speed to arrive at its destination in short order. Interceptors are defensive weapon systems. As such, a hyperdrive is of limited use in the role as a hyperdrive facilitates long-range offensive action. Since the interception role does not imply attack, there's really no need for a hyperdrive *unless* the interceptors are able to detect bombers in hyperspace, and interdict them with gravity wells. As far as I know, this just isn't the case. There's also a lot of "I think" for a video that's supposed to be an objective comparison. Comparing shields in Star Wars is futile, as shields (at least when we discuss fighters) never seem to help much. For example, single hits from TIE cannonade causes even X-Wings and Y-Wings to combust and blow apart into fragments. Where are the shields, then? They can hardly be quantified. You seem to put a lot of emphasis on dogfighting ability (which is strange; Interceptors aren't in the business of dogfighting as it's a frivolous waste of time when you're trying to intercept incoming strike craft from your carrier.) You then go on to say that the A-Wing is less maneuverable than the TIE Interceptor (maneuverability being key in a dogfight,) and further go on to praise "every dogfighting metric" of the A-Wing. These are some gymnastics.

Gotta keep in mind the term and role would evolve some from how we use it in a different setting. For instance another key role for interceptors was eliminating the other enemies defensive craft so your bombers could make a run. This would then make dogfighting abilities top priority. That said, either definition doesn’t change the results. A wing is the tie interceptor but with more capabilities, and the tri-fighter soundly beats all of them.

Yay, the video I wanted! :D I said this in my other comment and it's near the same as your list. My favourites are the A-Wing coming in Number 1, the Tri-Fighter coming in Number 2, the TIE Interceptor coming in Number 3 and the V-Wing coming in Number 4. But I generally really like Interceptors so the top 3 all rank highly in my overall favourites.

ARC 5555, the Eclipse would act just like the Raddus in this situation, ripping the supremecy in half and most likely some of the resurgents. Plus its armor is so thick that the rest of the resurgents wouldnt be able to scratch it.

The supremacy will go down fairly quickly for obvious reasons but the rest of the fleet has far more than enough firepower to destroy the eclipse.

They haven't had much material to build on back in 2005. Alot of these informations came over the years after the fighter's debut in episode 3 and we haven't seen much of it in the movie itself. Some things are literally just made up, like Palpatines' shuttle from episode 3 being the empires' troop transporter or General Grievous' personal fighter "Soulless One" being the bomber for the CIS. Or how they designed the clone trooper classes.. I could go on and on. Still, it was one hell of a game and no where else could I have been closer to experiencing the battle of coruscant (Lego Star Wars doesn't count since you can't move freely)

Something I must point out, dogfighting should not matter to an interceptor. What it needs to do is rapidly chase down enemy craft or intercept them before they can get to their target. Having missiles, heavy firepower and good straight line speed should be all that matters.

Something I'll add onto this; the F-106, one of the best interceptors ever designed, did not have pilots wear a G-suit and the pilot did not have a very good field of view out of the aircraft. Nice video. While I do agree with your overall choices, I would have liked an introduction that clarified how an interceptor is different from a space superiority fighter. To my knowledge, interceptors are designed to engage at long range, protecting their support craft by preventing the enemy from getting close. They could be escorting bombers & need to engage space superiority fighters, or attack bombers before they get in range of capital ships. In this instance the TIE Interceptor works very well with the much slower TIE Bomber, as the Rebel CAP would have to engage them before taking out the Bombers. They still are not the best interceptors, I agree, but this is a case where Imperial simplicity does play well together. As an aside, the fact that the Resistance A-wings & X-Wings in 'The Last Jedi' waited until the First Order TIE's were on top of the bombers to engage is what I felt essentially doomed both bomber squadrons.

What I think you forget in your analysis is that shields increase maneuverability in atmosphere by decreasing friction. This means that ships like the A-wing or V-wing perform better in-atmosphere than there stats would indicate. Although space is their primary combat purview it does mean that ships with shields handle better in atmosphere, something to keep in mind. Thanks for the great videos.

Tbh people don’t realize that only the top percentage of pilots actually have the creativity to outsmart a droid fighter, droids even then can still react faster than organically. Tri-fighter easily should’ve won and I’m glad it did
