@MattAngiono
@MattAngiono 4 жыл бұрын
@@mikeskylark1594 on a side note, I wouldn't call those people ex-vegans, which don't really exist.... We can call them ex-plant-based, as veganism is a stance against animal abuse, and no ethical vegan ever goes back to being an abuser. These people never took veganism seriously in the first place, so they can't really say they ever were vegan. That term then just gets used to hurt the movement for animal liberation, which is what the word vegan is all about. It's important to bring the focus back around the animals, whenever we use that word especially!

Mike Skylark what ‘needed’ supplementation? What do you mean? Btw I doubt there’s ‘so many ex Vegans’, once you know what shit happens there’s no going back!. Actually I have known 1 ‘Vegan’ ( in 35 years) who went back to eating a standard meat based diet, but he also later drank himself to death with spirits, so he obviously had problems.

littlebcally1 I’ve never taken Iodine or any other supplement, except B12 of course which I get from Yeast Extract. Ive been Vegan 35 years and recently had a medical in which my Thyroid function was tested and came back as normal, I was told by the v surprised doctor that my blood pressure was that of a 20 year old and I’m 59!. The founders of the Vegan Society ( in 1944) didn’t take supplements and this was also before B12 had been discovered. One of the founders who I had the privilege to get to know, Visionary and Pioneer the late ‘Kathleen Jannaway’ had healthy children without any of this supplementation!

@@Kiyarose3999 Being vegan that long is an epic feat. But the image of the anaemic looking vegan doesn't come from nowhere. Plenty of vegans never cared for eating whole food plant based or knew what to eat. Some places in the world it is easier to have never needed supplements. For example in the US the selenium in the soil is very good, plenty of sun, widely iodised salt or good amounts in the soil being nearer coasts. I agree you don't necessarily need supplements. But to be optimal certain foods need seeking out. Brazil nuts, seaweed and sunshine guarentee good health. B12 is too big a risk, when you can just take a pill or fortified foods. And with the rise of junk food now everywhere, clearly not all vegans are getting enough dha. Better they supplement rather having them stop being vegan or being the one vegan meat eaters know who looks unwell

Thanks for the information, Please lets praise ourselves for living a vegan lifestyle but also acknowledge that not all vegans eat the healthiest foods. Vegan processed and fast foods are for sale everywhere but that does not mean they are healthy. These products are loaded with sodium and sometimes high in oils and many are made from genetically modified ingredients. Eat whole foods, hopefully organic, vegetables, fruits, grains, beans, nuts and seeds. MOST people are low in magnesium and many are low in Zinc, most people are low in B12, not just vegans. peace..

I’d really recommend Vitamin D3 from September through April if you live in the U.K. and frankly anywhere really if you have an office job. Even in a very sunny country, as you will hopefully be very cautious of the sun due to skin cancer. I take 2000 IU in autumn and winter and 1000 IU in sprint. B12 is an obvious one, definitely take a daily supplement. Iodine I’d recommend if you don’t eat much iodised salt, just be very careful not to overdose, as you can easily with iodine. I’d also recommend end Omega 3 EPA/ DHA. I take 600 ml a day (400 of which is DHA). I really think that’s all you need unless you have any specific requirements, of course (health conditions, pregnancy, etc.)

I've been vegan for close to five year. I recently had an infection and was prescribed antibiotics. After a while I noticed that everything started tasting metallic. I did a little research and found out that antibiotics deplete zinc and that a zinc deficiency can lead to metallic taste. So, for the first time, I started supplementing with zinc and the metallic taste went away. I think each of us has different needs for supplementation and we shouldn't assume that we are getting enough nutrients from our food, no matter whether we are vegans or omnivores.

It's more our lifestyle that isn't sustainable. We have poor soils that lack in B12 and iodine, so it is added into livestock's food or gets into the food chain through cleaning (milking machines are cleaned using iodine) and we live in areas where sun exposure during the winter isn't enough to sustain healthy levels, it would be enough for most of us (generally, as a society) in the summer-if we went outside more. Everything else should be easy to cover in healthy individuals who do not have many allergies or chronic diseases that require a dramatic increase in nutrients, as long as they follow a varied (!!) wfpb (!!) diet.

Selenium (50 .. 100µg / day) is crucial for vegans (and vegetarians) outside of North America and Finnland (soil fortification). Most are in or at the verge of deficiency in studies. SE may be almost as critical as B12 (and iodine). I noticed a strong improvement specifically after adding it. Important: The cronometer data is from North America were Selenium levels in plants are 10 .. 30x higher than in most regions of the world, which are mostly as selenium free as iodine free. Livestock fodder there today is regularly supplemented with Selenium, otherwise the animals won't prosper and yield optimally. Even fodder for mostly whole grain fed chicken. (Grain typically provides max Se). So I think humans not consuming the accummalted Se of animals have quite the same problem. Brazil nuts have strongly varying unreliable Selenium contents - you can easily get too much or to little - and are highly radioactive due to Radium (1000x more than normal foods, 2x per day almost double radioactivity), contain extreme amounts of Barium and are known for frequently containing max aflatoxin. Moderate Selenium deficiency signs are rather unspecific and accumulate long-term (critical antioxidant, thyroid & sex hormone system, immune system). Often Se deficiency is indicated by low T3 blood levels despite T4 and TSH in (upper) range.

@healthycell
@healthycell 4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Vegan Essentials includes natural sources for as many vitamins as possible. For example, Vitamin A as natural Beta carotene from Blakeslea trispora, Vitamin D from vegetable sources, and Vitamin E from natural sunflower. The B-vitamins are all bio-identical synthesized, like virtually all other supplements. Virtually all sources of vitamins in supplements are synthesized. Take Vitamin B12 for example. Even with companies that say their source of vitamin B12 comes from natural yeast, it' snot really natural. They are actually using synthesized forms. They feed synthesized B12 to the yeast, and then the yeast excretes the vitamin B12 it was fed. Since it went through an organism, they can call it natural, but it's the same raw material. I hope this helps.

What does it matter whether you get your nutrients from supplements or other enriched sources? Absolutely nothing we eat is natural. Our meat has been selectively bred over thousands of years, and they are still bombarded with supplements and antibiotics. All the fruits, vegetables, and grains we eat have been selectively bred and genetically modified. Everything we eat is artificial, and doesn't occur in the wild. And that's a good thing, because people who lived in the wild lived for a small fraction of the time we do. Artificially designed food is a _good_ thing, not a bad thing. Thinking something is good just because it's "natural" is an appeal to nature fallacy. We are much better than the random, inefficient process of natural selection at making sure we get everything we need and optimize our health. It's quite possible that in the future, we get everything we need from pills. We shouldn't denounce supplements just because we're afraid some people might try and fallaciously appeal to nature at us.

@@abhayagarwal5097 I don't know, I have never been really sick so I never really had a reason to go for blood test and I did check my B12 once (cuz it started showing up in my feed) and it was normal considering I don't take any supplements (ever). I'm from India and considering vegetarian diet is big part of a lot of people diets for generations so I guess different spices(which are basically seeds which are like powerhouse for different nutritions) and different variety of vegetables, legumes,lentils, fruits we eat takes care of it.
