What Mr. Greger does not explain is that small daily doses of B12 are much better absorbed than a weekly large dose. Google the study at 5:08. This is why a daily dose of 50 mcg is as effective as a singly weekly dose of 2000 mcg. The numbers did not add up, and this is why.

I read an article which stated that according to Harvard maximum of 1000 MCG body can easily take but to be on safer side 500mcg will do as we get b12 from our diet as well. When you buy a multivitamin there wil be only 2.4 MCG the recommended dosage but isolating b12 only and selling it of 2.4 MCG will be very cheap and company will not make any profit so they sell higher dosage which is safe and they can make profit ou if it.

It’s important to remember that B12 is water soluble (the same way vitamin C is) - which means that if you ingest more than you need your body will naturally excrete it in urine. When I had my blood tested, my B12 was “a little low” (because I had sometimes forgotten to take a daily supplement). Later, my blood test was fine because I’ve since upped the dosage to what I know is more than the minimum requirement. Just to make sure. Any extra gets peed out without a toxic level accumulating.

@iCristalrose 3 жыл бұрын
Wawruto 2.4 mcg dose is enough to cover your daily need of 1 mcg (this is what you will absorb out of 2.4). But in case you need to lower your homocysteine level you need to take more. At the same time absorption % gets lower the more you take. So to absorb slightly more than 1 mcg you will need to take not less than 10-50 mcg daily, or even better 250 mcg to absorb ~3.5 mcg.

Optimal dosage if you don't have gut issues. If you suffer with any gut disorder or weight reduction surgery, your ability to absorb B12 via intrinsic factor route and/or passive diffusion is likely compromised. Further, if you have a fatty liver or compromised bile duct, utilization of liver B12 stores will be seriously compromised.

Of course, if you have been taking Metformin for years AND have neuropathy, the literature has shown dosages of up to 5mg/day. Which is EXACTLY where I am. After suffering from neuropathy since 1999, I started a regime of neurotropic B vitamins (B1, B6 P5P, B7, B9 and B12) and 90% of my pain I've suffered with for decades, disappeared in the first week. In the course of the next 6 months, the numbness in my thighs receded to the tops of my ankles with parts of my feet also regaining sensation. As a test, I will start very, very gradually reducing these to see where the symptoms startup again, thus transitioning from the initial load dosage to a longer term maintenance dosage. At the moment I'm takin 1.5mg B12 before each meal as part of this therapeutic dosage I will reduce this initially to 3mg spread out over four times a day.

@nibblrrr7124
@nibblrrr7124 2 жыл бұрын
You should either take 50µg cyanocobalamin B12 once a day, or 2,000µg once a week. The RDA/DV is just 2,4µg, but that doesn't take into account that the body can only absorb a little at a time efficiently. That doesn't matter as much if you get it spread out over the day in the form of animal products or fortified foods, but matters a lot if you just want to take it all at once. Your body can only absorb the first µg or so through a specialized transport mechanism ("intrinsic factor"). The rest has to passively diffuse through the intestine walls (or the skin under your tongue with sublingual tablets), which is much less efficient and the vast majority doesn't make it. But you can compensate by taking a lot more, so the body gets the couple µg it has used up during the day. Once it's in the body, it can store even larger amounts very efficiently in the liver, so once a week is a good strategy, esp. since B12 itself is dirt cheap and you mostly pay for the filler & packaging of the tablets.
@nibblrrr7124
@nibblrrr7124 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, and these masses are given in units of *micrograms* (µg, sometimes mcg or ug), which is one millionth of a gram - as opposed to the usual milligrams (mg) used for other nutrients, because we need so little B12. 1,000µg = 1mg = 0.001g

@nibblrrr7124
@nibblrrr7124 2 жыл бұрын
Not sure which study you mean by "first" - can you give a timestamp/title/author? If you're talking about the formula (Berlin et al 1968, at 4:32), it is just a model of B12 absorption, extrapolated from different data using theoretical considerations & assumptions. The last study (Del Bo et al 2019, at 5:07) was an empirical test in real humans, which showed that those exact doses achieve the actual outcome that we care about (low homocysteine & MMA levels, as well as serum B12 levels), so it makes sense to prioritize that.

After 2 1/2 years on a WFPB diet, my husband finally had his B12 checked and it was 148. We both had been taking 1000 mcg 3x per week sublingual...methylcobalamin. He went to daily same dose and it came up to 290. He is now taking 2000 mcg per day alternating methyl and cyanocobalamin. He is due to be checked again in about a month. @SoUL Well that is only true if that human is not deficient. ;-). But the fact is that those meat eaters know that they are wrong and that they only supplementing the B12 and the protein through the poor animals. As animals don't produce it themselves but only eat it or get it supplemented if they are not out in the wild. As soy and corn only contains proteins, carbs, fats and micronutrients but unfortunately it does not contain B12.

I know this video was a year ago but I am still confused with the math of all this with the mcg and the percentage and daily value. I desperately need to know if what im wanting to take is ok. Is it ok to take a Bcomplex & blood builder everyday? The b complex has b12 of 50mcg as methylcobalamin & the blood builder has b12 of 30mcg of cyanocobalamin. Is 80mcg of this ok? I am taking just the blood builder at the moment, for a week now but I want to take the Bcomplex everyday too. Im just worried ill be getting too much. I got blood work done and it wasn't too bad. I got it done because I wasn't feeling myself and having depression like symptoms and panic attacks. I was anemic in the past also. I just had a miscarriage two months ago and bled for 15 days. So I feel my iron wasn't where it should be due to this. My RDW% was on the higher level of 14.3 which I looked up it says your iron could be low. So it wasn't horrible but now where it should be. So thats why I started the blood builder. I got these vitamins from MegaFood Vitamins because they are made from food and seemed much better than over the counter stuff. Please help me to know if this is what I should be taking.

Even this video has me confused. I'm a 62 yo Male vegan. I was taking 1,000 mcg 1 daily in a supplement. When I reduced to 2,000 mcg weekly I was very fatigued and went back to 1,000 mcg daily. Problem solved. Additional study shows you can take too much B-12 and the excess isn't simply eliminated. Yup, every now and again I'll have fortified nutritional yeast as a flavoring and I love a Miramite sandwich. What's a boy to do?

Slow down! Vitamins B12, choline, and folate can partly accommodate a deficiency of each other right? They all address elevated homocysteine for instance. So taking more B12 could mask a folate or choline deficiency right?

I've done my own research about it and I feel that taking chlorella is a better way to get b12 cuz it's considered a super food. Im curious why hardly any of the vegan dr's talk about chlorella and b12, they always recommend b12 supplements when chlorella is superior.

@nibblrrr7124 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, buy a different supplement with a higher dose. The official DV for B12 is 2.4µg (mcg) because that amount would probably be sufficient if you were to get it spread out over the day in the form of animal products or multiple fortified foods - but if you're taking it all at once in a tablet, your body can't absorb it as well, so you need to compensate by taking more. The actual B12 in those tablets is dirt cheap, the vast majority of the production cost of those tablets is filler material & packaging.

Can someone explain why the recommended frequency always seems to be either daily or once weekly? Is that just random or does it matter in terms of absorption? Like is 1000 mcg twice a week just as fine?
@gregoryshawn100
@gregoryshawn100 3 жыл бұрын
The once a week option is an easy to remember alternative for those who find the daily supplementation inconvenient, but of course you can take B12 twice or three times a week or whenever you want. As for the dosage, 1000mcg twice a week is actually more than 2000mcg once a week because of the complex absorption mechanism (the lower the dose the higher the absorption) but since b12 has no toxicity or adverse effects, 1000mcg twice a week is perfectly fine.

@@gregoryshawn100 Okay the reason I’m asking, is because the b12 that I have is in liquid form and one tincture-full, which goes up to 1 ml, is 500 mcg B12, so it’s impossible to measure 50 mcg if I were to take it daily, cause the tincture is so tiny, and then taking 4 full tinctures once a week just seemed like a lot to me. I’ve heard of a study linking excess b12 to increase risk of lung cancer in men. Haven’t read into it more, but it was enough to make me go “okay I want to hit the recommended amount and not a single mcg more”, that’s why I’m trying to be so precise about it 😂
