Hey everyone hope you enjoyed the video. Let me know if you want to see a sequel and what games you want to see featured in it. Also, for the accessibility of each card game, I was going off of my personal experiences but it's defiantly not the same everywhere. If theirs a game that's more popular in your neck of the woods, then let me know in the comments!!!

Interesting to hear. I don't know where you are from, but here in Germany, or at least near my location Yu-Gi-Oh is by far the most common game being played physically. Every game store has Yu-Gi-Oh locals and even privat locationis have tournaments from time to time. While MTG is definitely the second major game right now. The amount of players is shrinking quite a bit in the last time. It is nearly on par with Digimon right now. Pokemon I have never seen anyone playing with physical cards to be honest 😄

All fine, however I would argue, that Yu-Gi-Oh is nowhere near as popular as mtg. It is hard to find good data online, but since Yu-Gi-Oh is way more popular in a lot of countries outside of the US like in Europe and for example in Japan I think it is quite a close competition. Nevertheless it seems like Pokemon has by far the most sold cards but still no one plays it. 😄

I would disagree on the "up until recently magic only allowed new cards in their most popular formats". Magic's premier format is standard, which is roughly just the past two years of set releases, but they have around a dozen other actively supported formats which include pioneer, which is 2012 forwards, Modern, which is 2003 forwards, and eternal formats like legacy and commander which allow for any cards not on their respective ban lists. If you are looking for budget, you can even play pauper, which is all commons.

Fair enough. I was just referring to how up until a few years ago it seemed like most magic-constructed events were in Standard format. My 1st TCG was Pokémon, but after discovering yugioh I slowly migrated my money and time to yugioh. Now I just cherish my Pokémon cards but I never play. But the worst part about Pokémon is the last time I checked 90% of my cards r too old to play in any legal format. I only found 2 formats, 1 for recent cards and 1 that goes back to the generation after the bulk of my Pokémon cards r from, black and white onwards. This means that even in the older format I can’t play w most of my cards. Lv.X, team rocket, dark, they r all collection only. 😢

Or you could just do what I did and make your own. Get some friends together and design some cards based on your favorite fictional characters. You will have to agree on the rules, and everyone in the group should have the power to veto any overpowered cards. But other than that, go nuts! Even if you're not an artist, you can still make designs relatively easily with programs like canva or Google slides, and Tabletop simulator let's you easily import them into a virtual table top. So the cards will cost you nothing but the time it takes to make them.

I started with Pokémon, moved on to MtG and I mostly haven't looked back, other than my forays into the now defunct Legends of the 5 Rings and WoW TCG (not Hearthstone, the actual paper WoW TCG). I'm not going to move away from MtG, but I am taking stock of other TCGs, and Yu-Gi-Oh is so opaque to me. Also when I look in on Pokémon I am deeply saddened that my old energy destruction strategy isn't really a feature of the game. I was far more sadistic in my youth and thrilled at keeping my opponent from using the big attacks they were building towards and chipping them away with the old TCG implementation of Hyperbeam. What was WotC thinking back when they designed the initial game? "Hey in the video game there is this absurdly powerful attack that exhausts it's user" and WotC went "Cool, but in this game it's chip damage that does more to slow your opponent". Nintendo now develops the game, but WTF WotC? [WotC stands for Wizards of the Coast, the developers of MtG and the initial devs of the Pokémon TCG, that only lasted a few years, Nintendo retook control of their own property and I don't know enough about the post WotC game]
@chasealexander88
@chasealexander88 Жыл бұрын
Energy destruction is still a very real play option in Pokémon, especially in control/mill decks. Crushing Hammer, flip a coin, discard an energy. Supporter cards that discard any energy. And a demon chicken named Yveltal that has an attack that destroys 3 special energies on your opponent's monsters.

@@chasealexander88 oh, that's new to me. When Nintendo took over development energy destruction really fell by the wayside, glad to see its return. Having said that I am not interested in branching out any more, I'm happy being an MtG player. Having also said that I am done with D&D and I love all of the indie TTRPGs, like Apocalypse World and games derived from it. I'm not consistently against WotC, but D&D needs to D&Die

Another point that people gloss over when discussing what TCG is best for someone is that out of all the TCG's Magic does the best at allowing for multiple players in a single game. In fact there are formats specifically meant for doing so. Yugioh was super popular in my college and often people would try to play multiple players in a single duel. I know the analogy of duel is lost there. It would often not work out that well but it did have its own strategies. Magic because of its resource driven system slows the game down enough for players to pull back into the game even with slow starts. The reason for this is in multiplayer games players who don't put out early threats are often ignored due to the unique way board presence works. This allows them time to draw into answers and recover their position. Recently there has been an emphasis on power but that doesn't mean a new player can't have fun too. There are many options for lower power such as Yugiohs beginnings and higher power decks to play against. I only have enough time/money to keep up with one TCG at a time but currently MTG is my favorite.

But I feel because of the demographic in LA, they like more of the anime games more especially among asians, blacks, and hispanics. But when I moved up to Seattle, almost everywhere does MtG and Pokemon, you will be lucky to find anything else. I pleated mtg when portal came out. I enjoyed it but it did feel methodical and geared toward executing your meta. I only recently started playing ygo and its pace is comparably frantic. Multiple metas can be played, but sadly i think most players have mtg brain and will give up their match if they dont get the hands that build up their "guaranteed win" conditions. Konami has definitely made the game harder for oldschooler and buff, by default, their most recent players And this is where mtg still shines despite its slow speed.

Magic if you want to shut your brain off and take it super easy. Just play lands and pass turn. For like 4 turns. Digimon is you want to think a little more. You will see faster and somewhat more complex gameplay. Yugioh if you want to read, memorize long combos, look up guides, etc. So in other words....big brain. Yugioh is honestly more skill based, faster, more complicated, and generally has a higher ceiling than any other tcg.

No way. In yugioh you lose turn 1. Of the three it is the least skill based.
@thebelmont1995
@thebelmont1995 Жыл бұрын
@@AirIUnderwater It is the most skill based out of the 3. You only lose on turn 1 if you're bad. You have to actually counter your opponent or stop them from building their board. Of which there are plenty of ways to do. The game ends usually in about 4 turns. Turn 1 player tries to build a board. Turn 2 player then tries to break that board. If your losing in 1 turn that'd genuinely be a skill issue.

@@thebelmont1995 You're going to sit there and say that if you lose turn 1 in Yugioh you are bad at the game? Think about that for a moment and make sure you're not imbibing in the Yugioh koolaid too much. I play all three. Of the three, Yugioh is my favorite. But I'm not going to lie to people and tell them that it's the most fun or the most complex or the most skill based of the three TCGs. Because it's objectively just not true. What is true is that of the three, there are games where you will lose turn 1 because of randomness. In Yugioh, the number of games you will lose turn 1 simply because you didn't draw the out, or because your opponent's cards just have such overwhelming effect that even if you drew all the handtraps you wanted to draw you'd still lose, or where you didn't draw into what you needed and you lose instantly because that was enough time in that one turn for your opponent to take game. It is the least skill based out of the three. Yugioh is the game where you lose the most not because your opponent outplayed you or knew your gameplan and found the line. Yugioh is the game where you lose simply because the opponent drew 1 out of 15 of their instant win cards even though you drew 3 of your 4 "stop the opponent's effect" cards. I haven't ever seen that happen in MTG or Pokemon. In Yugioh, that happens every other game. Go to PTCGO, see how many instant win decks are played. Go to MTGA, see how many instant win decks are played. Go to Master Duel, and just look in the short history of its life how many degenerate decks are out there that upsets people. Decks that win turn 1, or decks that are so oppressive that you are funneled into playing very few specific cards. So yeah, of the three, Yugioh is my favorite. I love the art, the concept, the general gameplay that it does have. But I am under no illusion that it is the most thought-provoking or skill-based card game we have available.

@@AirIUnderwater If you lose in 1 turn yes, generally that is on you. There is not a single deck currently that you will auto lose to if you make your extra deck properly and utilize your side board and run a healthy making of board break cards in your main. You don't need to draw the out in most cases, if you run mutiple board break cards you will 9 out of 10 hands have what you need. There is not a single deck in the game that has no out and will auto win against turn 1 unless you don't know what to hand trap, your deck is bad, you have no going 2nd cards to break a board or you don't have any ED cards to play for it. Of which there are dozens of each. Yugioh is the least luck based out of the 3. You don't have mana, which mean you don't need to rely on luck to draw mana. In mtg you will have to rely to luck most games because you don't draw mana, don't have enough of certain color, or just a plain draw too many. And the decks are 60 cards, not 40. Also you have no extra deck. So you are never guanteed any outs. Also in magic there is no thinking. You play a mana pass your turn then play 1 card end your turn. Rinse repeat for around 6 turns. Very little strategy. Very little thinking involved. I'm aware of every competing deck in the meta. I usually beat them all just fine if my deck isn't absolute crap. Which it usually isn't. In yugioh I always set up my extra deck so that I have in my ED guaranteed 3 to 5 outs to any major deck and my side board is for when I known I'm going 2nd so out of the 40 cards in my main deck I know I'm having at least 20 cards that I can rely on to break a board. 15 in my side deck, 3 to 5 in my extra. I'm litterly guanteed to "draw the out" if I'm playing at bare minimum 20 cards total 3 to 5 which I'm guanteed no matter what. And as for master duel, it's best of 1 format. If it was best of 3 and allowed a side board NONE of the degenerate stardegies would be that powerful. A lot of cards were made for best of 3 format. Entire decks were also designed around that in mind too. But even in MD I usually don't have any issues. I countered every deck that was "broken". The DD dynamite deck I just ran a 10 card ED. The new mill deck I just play 60 cards instead of 40 in my main. Combo decks that have 5 negates or more I just run dweller in my ED or bagoohooska, and at least 3 max c, 3 droplets, 3 ra sphere mode, and maybe some gozens. In yugioh you have to memorize long combos, learn entire 10 to 15 cards setups, learn how to dodge hand traps, learn to play around your opponent with your extra deck cards, use your side board more, and actually think beyond play 1 red mana pass your turn. It's objectively the most complex and skill based out of the 3. It is mathematically the least luck based. Every decent card in the game netw you advantage. Searching, drawing, etc you don't need 4 mana and have to wait 4 turns just to search a card with a "tutor" or wait 3 turns just to draw 2 in a 60 card mimum format and of EDH a 99 crad format where you can only run 1 copy of every card in your whole deck! You're just factually wrong here. Again yes, skill issue. I've played the game for over 15 years. I've almost never had problems exept for very early yugioh which was much more luck based. Cards like ra sphere mode, droplets, lightning storms, nibiru, etc are so good they can break entire boards on their own. And cards like summon limit, there can be only 1, Gozen match, etc etc. There are honestly so many ways and so many cards to beat most meta strategies it is usually on you if you dont run any of them. Most people don't play handtraps anymore either.

@@thebelmont1995 dont get me wrong, I love ygo too and play it more than MtG. It doesnt change the fact that in ygo going 2nd sucks since most decks were designed to go 1st especially if you are a very control based deck outside of sky strikers that are really made to deal with breaking boards. The only way a lot of control decks have a shot to relevance in the current format is if they can run d shifter or main a lot of bystials. In YGO we have shit like tear-ishzu which practically have answers about anything you throw at it, they dont play an oppressive negate board, the only "negate" they play is dweller and their walking solemn warning or some builds with Branne de fleur. They can literally go full combo even on your turn because of havnis. The only true way to beat tear is practically your deck can main deck d shifter, macro, soul drain or d fissure. And wait until kashtira comes out, they literally have a walking macro that banishes cards face down and locking your zones. To the point Konomi has do murder both decks in OCG. The only deck that had a fighting chance against either of them was Labyrinth because they can main gozen, rivalry, skill drain and doesnt care too much about the graveyard. And it is even impressive for a trap deck, which is generally a slower deck, to have a fighting chance against those 2 decks. Now the current most cancerous deck is Runick (the banish mill deck). Which is practically floodgate.deck without mystic mine. YGO has a tier 0 format every few years and this one is more powerful than the pure zodiac in their prime. I am not a yugiboomer but I have been playing since the 5Ds era on and off. I am generally not a fan of tier 0 formats but this current one isnt as cancerous as pepe or zoo. TCG is still fucked right now since Konomi wants to sell hypernova which has more support for kashtira and tear.
