A negative effect of a way I was raised, was this spanking or punishment for "bad" behavior. I only did what they expected of me to avoid punishment. So when I moved out, I had zero motivation to do things like take a shower or brush my teeth, or put on clean clothes everyday. I didn't do these things as an adult because I knew I would not get punished since I was living on my own. Eventually I learned the importance of these tasks on my own, but I was an adult for years without doing these necessary things that help take care of my body and make me more presentable around everyone else. I wish I had a better childhood, but most of the people in charge of taking care of me, they usually didn't know what the best thing was, because Aspergers was unheard of during my childhood (the 80's). Explaining "why" I should or should not do these things was something I wish I had been told as a kid, but my mother made a rule that I am not allowed to ask "why" questions, I guess because I was asking "why" so much, it got on her nerves. Before that rule, I would ask why, but all I got out of her was "Because I said so!" For many things I was told to do growing up, a lot of it seemed illogical, and a waste of my time and efforts. I only did the tasks because I did not want to be punished.

Green Roc I had the same 80s childhood. I've come to see it from a new perspective, one in which my parents didn't understand they're own behavior yet alone understands mine or my sisters. throw my mother's narcissistic personality disorder and fathers bipolar depression in and there's just almost no chance they could do the right thing. but the wonderful thing about us is that we're probably easily able to understand, forgive and move on and learn to do the best thing for ourselves and our health. interesting that we experienced something so very similar.

Thanks for sharing Green Roc, I'm sorry you experienced that. We actually have a blog article about this on our website, specifically about why rewards and punishments don't work with neuro-atypical people who suffer from anxiety. You might find it validating! Green Roc Yet, cus they wanted to instill that practise, they still spanked. To today, I still don't always remember to do that.

Green Roc DITTO. Same here! It's seriously soul-killing inside to get brought up this way :( Don't give up... autists are perceptive, aware & analytical that we can figure out how to get our pieces back. I was thinking about this exact thing in my own life today & recently. How it's very hard to connect with my own thoughts, preferences, needs & especially my own motivation, bc everything in childhood was geared to avoid extreme upset & punishment from a chronically triggered parent :( I'm still struggling, but it's better every year as I work on it.

You said it best. ABA works, but, not in a safe way. Therefore, it shouldn't be tried for therapy.

Lavender essential oil raises our estrogen level. Even for men... so it likely will eventually cause tiredness & feeling poorly for guys. There are other essential oils for relaxation too :) Talk is a form of therapy... it prevents some people getting pent up or unable to process their thoughts? Somatic work is great imo! Thank you for all this fantastic, detailed info from your personal experiences! This level of info would cost a living fortune just to hear what you are sharing here. Wow. Very very helpful.
