I don’t hate the idea of a “the psychology of hype hunting” type of video. I collect for me but I certainly also consider if it’ll be prestigious/respected by others whether it be normal people or other collectors

Your live streams are the one I enjoy. Thoughtful commentary without hype.

Appreciate the kind words. I am probably too Midwestern for hype.

Also wouldn’t mind a stand alone video about your favorite big date watches. Would love to learn more about options out there

Shannon sharpe (retired hall of famer) said on his show something like “I wear an expensive/nice watch to let you know that my time is valuable.” I kinda like that and feel that someone gives credibility at least slightly to the hype pieces are the best pieces

I think they thing is I don't really trust what made a hype watch a hype watch. I suspect it's herd mentality and algorithms shoving just a small subset of watches in one's face. I totally get wanting to wear a luxury watch. But a lot of what is hype is actually not all that rare or special. In some hobbies (like pinball) being unique is very prized. But in watches getting a piece unique doesn't seem to be like a pinnacle goal for many, just another 5711 stock. That's what I don't get, especially once the pricing gets so far above retail. Because we can easily judge you can get just as much, if not more, watchmaking (hand-crafted time, features, finishing, etc.) from another brand for the same retail price. But a lot just don't consider them outright, because Instagram didn't tell them to love them (that's what I think at least!).

@@WatcheswithDennis I think of it like pop music. It’s low quality and not well respected, but it’s catchy and at a party/club/bad it’s what you’d prefer to be on. That’s kinda like a hype watch. It may not be the best at anything, but if it’s catchy it’s desirable

I saw that live stream with that “hype/attention” collector. He just came off as sad, shallow, and desperate for strangers’ approval. Between that and his constant foul language, that livestream was pulled from KZbin and I don’t think he made any friends or fans. The fact that his self-worth comes from strangers in an elevator is mind blowing.

Will Sea - Gull Watches ever get respect in the Watch community ? I've been looking at the brand but don't know anyone who's bought one except the 1963.
@WatcheswithDennis22 күн бұрын
Oh, that is an interesting (and challenging!) question to try and answer. I think the thing is the 1963 is the one watch that I know of (and I suspect many know of) from them that feels like it is "of" them. Like a design they are associated with. Respect from many requires unique design. Looking like an affordable Patek or Rolex will attract some buyers but brand identity above all the others means they must have unique designs. They have some, but the 1963 is the only one that has taken hold. So, I think they can do it, but they'll need something (else) that feels very Sea-Gull but that's a risk they might be concerned to take (beyond what they've already done).

Thanks for replying 👍 I've heard that Sea-Gull are the largest manufacturer of mechanical movements in the world and i like some of their other Watches i might get one this year & see what it's like.

Your hate is so great. Do you think logging your watch wearing changes your habits? Perhaps wearing a more expensive piece to maintain it in the top 5 or are you disciplined enough that it makes no difference.
@WatcheswithDennis24 күн бұрын
I think it resulted in me rotating more because I would notice a watch not appearing in my current screen listing. And that may have motivated me to sell some off. But nothing hit 52 wears which means nothing I own even averaged once per week.
