Which WATERCOLOR PAPER should I Choose? (Bockingford of Course!😉)

That's delightful, Paul! 😊 I'm going to try St Cuthberts Mill paper one of these days. I am collecting watercolor paper. Arches being the predominant kind. Cold pressed. I am like you too, in relation to opening packages. I don't wanna mess them up. I still have the Rosemary and Co wrap that was so delightful, with their stickers and "thank you" for their handmade lifting, scrubber brushes. 😉 Right now, I've been practicing for almost 2 years on cheaper paper. But now, I'm ready to tackle the finest of watercolor papers. Happy Painting, Paul!

Arches is a lovely paper, yes not cheap, but very often you get what you pay for. Mind you, I do like the Bockingford (not too expensive), ok I'm used to using it and as you know that is the key, but I do find it works well with both details and wet-in-wet washes. @@TheDevonArtist Yes, arches is expensive. And that's why I have been hesitant to use any of it for practice - I've even bought large individual sheets. And many blocks of different sizes in Arches. I hope to get around to it sometime soon. I've also purchased Asian paper. Among other popular kinds of 100% cotton. That's nice to know about St Cuthbert's paper. Thanks for sharing that. I intend to try it out as well. I want to try all of the paper used by professional artists. Thanks Paul.

I’ve used Arches, Kilimanjaro, Windsor & Newton watercolor papers and they all perform excellently with W&N being my favorite. However, 100% cotton has gotten expensive and I don’t feel like paying those prices. I’ve made the switch to Bockingford (140lb cold press). While layering can be a bit tricky it takes scrubbing exceptionally well. It’s a great paper once the properties are figured out.

I do agree with that you do need to practice with the paper for a while and get used to it, then it can be a very good addition to your watercolour supplies. 😊

Did you say that this paper has some woollen felt in it, as in wool felt from sheep? I've done a bit of felting with wool from a neighbor's sheep. It certainly feels different from cotton (derived from a plant). Thank you for sharing your skill and talent.

Hi Stephanie, I believe that's what they say by creating the texture with woollen felts, the wool is added to the surface within the making process. This creates a natural woollen felt textured. I've never tried the rough version Sue. I am surprised it's not available across the water. 🤔
