I bought a painless kit for my 62 C10, I'm absolutely completely impressed. It came with a 130 page detailed manual for my application, everything is like GM OEM but updated, I can get fuses, flashers & relays from anywhere. I honestly don't know how you can do better for under $400 After doing some research & listening to home boy ramble on.. my advice, go with a painless kit

Absolutely great job Pete. As car guys, we find something we like and we stick with it. Honestly, this is how most of us end up married as well! (LOL) As an auto tech for decades, my early career started with a wiring diagram that folded out 8 page long in the back of the factory service manual. Head lights on the left of page 1, tail lights on the right of page 8. Everything else was in the middle with wire colors only. I am passionate about proper wiring, colors, terminal position, grounds and how to use a digital multi meter to perform voltage drops, opens, shorts & high resistance. Many don’t know but a “Sun Roof” (Or Moon Roof) has four channels with hoses that go down both “A” pillars and “B” pillars and terminate at the rocker panel drain. Clog these up with tree leaves or daily debris, and you have water under the carpet & seats. This causes opens, shorts, power to grounds, all kinds of issues. Thanks again for bringing this companies product to our attention. Thanks Pete!

Thank you so much for sharing this. I have my Dad's '76 F250 that caught on fire quite a while back. It has a 460 out of a continental instead of the original 390. I only have a basic understanding about wiring. Been struggling to decide how to start fixing it. Don't have the money to pay someone to do it. Also would like to be able to understand it. I decided that ripping out all the existing wire would be the safer way to go. Trying to understand wiring diagrams I found this video. The basic harness is exactly what I need! I love that everything is grouped and clearly marked for this dummy. I am so happy now- I might actually be able to fix it myself!!!

I'm just starting out, I'm restoring my 1984 Ford Ranger 2.3L long bed, glad you covered more than enough wire. like the thickness/length. I have a question. how many circuits do I need. and what do I do if I have extra wires? I have the old harness to lay out. I thinking of going with water proof, what do you think? Don't plan to drive it in a lake, but may go through a puddle, or normal down poor road rain. I have standard windows. Just have brake lights, reverse lights (2) each. parking lights 6 may go to 8, I have a hood light, dome light two head lights high beam low beam. Gas tanks (2). AC unit, no electric fan, electronic ignition. installing a Holley Spider. What is a circuit? speakers behind the seat. and under the dash. Original Radio standard cigarette lighter. I could go big but would have all the extra. Looks like 14 circuit water proof $445.00

Watched this video and figured I’d buy the Kwick wire kit based on your review. Yes the instructions are nice. But man they couldn’t have made this “universal” harness much shorter. There isn’t many wires I don’t have to extend. Your better off to pay half the price and get a painless harness at least you’d get what you pay for. This kit is nice but not worth the money. Especially with the length of their wires

Damn, Where were these people back in 1980 when I was building my 1967 Pontiac Grand Prix ? Back then was a lot more difficult to tackle vehicle wiring as to everything you need today is just a push button away. We really had to scrounge around for many items we needed, but in way, looking back, it was ( to me ) more rewarding. Pete, remember the days of scrounging?

When do you decide its time to use a brand new harness vs reuse the existing one? I recently parted out a car that was so badly infested that I had to shovel the interior out one scoop at a time. And yet, the entire wiring harness was still usable. In the project I'm working on now, the previous owners hacked things up a bit but it's nothing you can't fix with a bit of solder and heat shrink.

Hey Pete in a previous video you said American auto wire was a good company. Is kwik better than Aaw.
@diyautoschool8 жыл бұрын
YES--Your right I did make a video on American Auto Wire.. There is a BIG DIFFERENCE between them and Kwik WIre.. The American Auto Wire Harness is a Proprietary Wire Harness -- Meaning -- It is specifically made for that car and is a Factory Replacement with extra's and costs $800.00 plus dollars... The KWIK WIRE Harness is an Aftermarket UNIVERSAL Harness that will work in any car or truck and is less then half the price Then American Auto Wire.. It all depends on how your restoring your vehicle and what your using as your accessorys.. The American Auto Wire Company Harness's have all the factory connections just like OEM and are for the people that are using Factory Gauges, Factory Ignitions, Factory Engines and want that OEM Factory Look.. The Kwik Wire Harness is designed for use as a Street Rod/Hot Rod/Rat Rod/Custom Car Wire Harness which is the More Popular of the two kinds... There is also company such as Rebel Wire and Painless Wire which is the competition of Kwik Wire.. The "OTHER" guys directions I used in the video was Rebel Wiring.. And as for Painless---There's nothing Painless about them all the way from their HIGH PRICES to there THIN COMPUTER WIRE SIZE Harness's.. Believe me, if your restoring your car KWIK WIRE is the #1 Overall Choice for Electrical Automotive Wiring... Thanks for bringing that subject up... And Thanks for Watching.. Pete

Comparing wire sizes between harness brands by looking at them is not a valid comparison. Most brands use cross-link wire which comes in three insulation thicknesses; TXL, SXL, and GXL. That 14awg wire can be thinner on one harness and thicker on another with the conductor being the same. Depends on what was used. Overall looks like a good harness.

Thanks for clearing this up, never knew they came with the factory connectors. The others companies I have used do not! Had to use half melted connectors that looked bad. Will use Kwik wire in the future. Merry Christmas Pete!!

Ive seen wire harness where all you got was a box full of bare wires and a cheezy 5 circuit glass fuse box that you had to wire up yourself.. What a joke....

great review Pete! and i believe, when a manufacturer makes the effort to produce a good instruction manual, it means he wants you to do it right and securely.i'm sure you wouldn't want the car to burn down. Enjoy the Holiday and be safe.
