Also Olympus Srl's Accord 40S, Kratos 4K, & Chroma 40 Spinning Reels!
In Hawaii we have 2 main categories for fishing rods. Dunking & Whipping. Dunking is casting to sliding live to dead baits, otherwise known as surf casting. Whipping is casting lures to jigs. But mainly grubs on lead weighted leader lines. For whipping the types of rods popularly used are spinning rods from 5'6" to 11'. They're popularly sold as Steelhead or SST type of rods. The preferred whipping rods are light weight sensitive high modulus blanks with smaller multiple braid guides.
Some anglers are attracted to PE ratings while others are into name brands. For myself i no longer "whip" using grubs. I'm more into shore jigging slow-pitch asymmetrical jigs from the shorelines. I call it jigging but to some locals it's still whipping as it's a broader term. For what i do i use popular PNW Steelhead Rods. My preferred center is a 9'9" medium rod. I've come to rely heavily on Guide Select Pro rods & recently SST Rods as well. I have them in 2pc & in travel rods from 9' to 10'6".
In this segment i'm showing 3 new Olympus Srl spinner releases for 2023. The Accord 40S, Kratos 4K & Chroma 40. All 4000 sized spinning reels. These are Italian reels that i've been using so far. I find the Accord casts freely & the best, the Kratos is insanely powerful & the Chroma is a good all around unit.
For these type of rods i use 3K spinners for light to medium-light & 4K for medium to medium-heavy applications. I mostly use braid but when i do use clear line it's always on the 3K reels. I prefer 15-20g jigs on my 3K & 30g for the 4K. Again these are my preferences & yours may differ. When i do use clear i've found using fluorocarbon didn't fit my game but monofilament did.
So now when you hear of "whipping the reefs" or "dunking the flats" now you know what it means.

Us northerners call them casting rods. Around here whipping rods are short and stout because you keep popping the bait off the bottom in a whipping motion and the bait keeps drifting back on every whip

Here in Hawaii surf casting rods are for dunking and spinning rods are for whipping. Sometimes YT blocks my vids because i'd mention rods for whipping. Lol!

I really appreciate that Kaban! When i did this video it was to answer several questions from anglers on why they couldn't find a "whipping rod" online or in the stores. To be honest i'd visit a few stores first to try them out in the store. Look at the ratings. To me the most basic of the best whipping rod is a Medium rated rod (or MH at the strongest) at 9'6" to 9'9". Has to be carbon, no fiberglass as that's heavy. Cork handles are ok but you'd see that more if the rod was rated lighter (like UL to L).

Very educational video, thanks Chris! I find Joe Olivas' (aka Whipping with Joe) philosophy amazing - "one rod". With one 7-ft rod, he catches everything from moi to monster uluas. That guy catches more fish with his one 7-ft pole than guys who own loads of ulua rods and reels. I am amazed at his fishing knowledge and skills.

Yes, what he's done is truly amazing! He actually hooked & landed a +100lb GT. But a lot of jealous anglers here can't let him have his moment on that. Took him a few days to get it weighed in at 99.2lbs on an official scale. It was still way over 100lb when caught because of dehydration in those few days it was reduced to 99.2lb. Many local big names backed Joe up from accomplished writers/authors to fishing businesses & even a local magazine comp. To me his sharing of using seaweed to catch fish as bait was something not commonly shared. Thank you for your comment:)

Thanks Patrick. Many local anglers are only familiar with the "whipping" term. Not many realize it's what most mainlanders use as float rods to kokanee & salmon to trout rods. It's all the same. Even the popular Rockaway Rods are built as surf rods (meaning that the reel seat is higher). But locals still use it as a whipping rod.

Hey there Chris,… I’ve got a few whipping rods that I use for salt and fresh water… an Okuma SST 9’6” spin and a 10’6” Lamiglas salmon/ steelhead conventional .. they cast flawlessly…!

The Lamiglas 10'6" is the longest i'd go. A very popular model. The 9'6" represent to me the lowest i'd go for length of a whipping rod. After owning 100's of rods all my life i can honestly say that for me the best "whipping" rod is a 9'9" Med rated rod at 8-17lb test line rated at 3/8-1oz. In fact Okuma makes this rod-The Guide Select Pro! The guy in charge at Okuma told me this rod is one of the most popular rods they offer for a reason! I have 4 of these exact rods that i have picked-up over the years. And a few months ago Mustad started to slowly release their new 18 rod line. And low & behold they offered a 9'9" Med for 8-17lb line at 3/8-1oz as well! Other companies ARE taking notice. There's a pretty good reason for this. It's the most perfect length & strength for what we do. I've been saying this for years and it seems others have been listening.

@@ScubaChris hey there,.. Everything that I have from Okuma has been great ..! can’t complain I like the Lamiglas for steelhead and salmon as well as stripers and largemouth bass … great for plastic worm rigs… Don’t use the spinner much because my go to setups are conventional… Sometimes I use my 9’ Tackle Industries musky rod at the beach… it doubles as a shorter version of a surf rod paired w/ Lexa 400 7:1 … retrieves large lures effortlessly 👍😎🤙 Tight lines, Chris…😎

I'm currently in Okinawa, and I picked up a Daiwa Labrax 9' to try to hit some Suzuki while I'm here, and it's pretty killer. I paired it with a Daiwa Caldia LT 3000. I haven't found any fish yet but the combo performs really well.

Aloha Evan, I must admit i'm not familiar with the equipment you're using but a ML to Med 9ft rod paired with a 3000 spinning reel is pretty solid! Will you be using braid? I have similar set-ups & i use 8lb/10lb braid. On my 3K Helios i spooled on 6lb mono as it was meant for a 9'6" Light rod. Still a lot of line.

@@ScubaChris I am currently using braid, I had the shop owner recommend a reel of braid and a good fluorocarbon to go with it. It was all In Japanese but from what I gather the braid is 20lbs as well as the fluoro. The braid was very fine so it held a full spool and still has room

Excellent information. Im here from Louisiana with interest in a shore rod for Bull Reds and the Okuma SST rods really looks great and offer a lot of models. Was looking for a recommendation on one around 9ft that could cast a 4 ounce weight well for cut bait presentations on the bottom. Which model would you recommend with a sweet spot of 3-4 ounces? Thank you for sharing.

HAWAIIAN CUSTOM RODS by Okuma. Model#HSP-S-962MA. Rated up to 5.64oz at 9'6". More for jigging to plugging but makes an excellent surf rod as well. I was the tester for this rod. Around $160 depending on who you go through. Google search it. On my first day using this rod i brought in a 16lb GT on it. Recently i recommended this to a guy going to Mexico for Roosterfish. He LOVED IT! okumafishingusa.com/collections/rods/products/hawaiian-custom-rods
