Whenever I stayed with my Grandmother in Alabama during the summer when I was a child, she would always put up bread and butter pickles in gallon jars and she would let me help her. She also had speckled butterbeans in her garden. There's nothing like a bowl full of speckled butterbeans and her pickles. If she would have let me that's all I would eat.

Thank you so much Miss Lori!! 💕❤️🙏 My mama is 84 and her most favorite pickle in the entire world is bread and butters, so I can’t wait to make these for her!! I’ve never seen a bread and butter refrigerator recipe! So fun! I’m so excited to make this!! I’d like to share my grannies refrigerator dills with everyone! I have this recipe written on a sheet of spiral notebook paper, that was written, by me, while I was sitting at my grannies kitchen table… I was newly married 32 years ago. It’s one of my most special possessions. It’s old and yellowed and has food splatters from hanging on my fridge (likely from various blender/mixing accidents 🤪) …. It’s so so yummy….BUT…. If you eat them to early, they taste super salty (I’ve made that mistake before, so that’s why I’m saying this) wait about 7 days and they will be just amazing! You can add onion and garlic and any spices that you like! Here is the brine recipe…. (My granny also used to say, do not adjust the vinegar OR salt in the recipe…. It’s important to keep it as is for safety 👍) back in the early 1900’s they were called “larder dills”…. And they were never kept in the ice box, just the pantry…. I would not recommend we do that today though 💕 It’s also best if you keep the cukes whole, just slicing off the ends (my gran used to say it makes them bitter, if you don’t slice them off) ~Grandma Marie’s refrigerator dills~ ~Several heads of fresh dill (or as much dried dill as you’d like) a head for each jar is perfect~ ~garlic cloves to taste~ ~sweet onion slices to taste~ ~hot peppers or hot pepper flakes to taste~ (not in original recipe) ~any other spices you may enjoy~ ~pickling cukes (or any kind really)~ ~grape leaves can be used in each jar, if you don’t have Alum 💕~ ~BRINE~ ~6 cups of water ~2 cups of 5% white vinegar~ ~1/2 cup canning OR kosher salt~ ~1/2 tsp of alum~ Bring brine to boil, let cool Put cukes, onions, garlic cloves, dill and spices in each jar. Pour cooled brine over each jar. Make sure all contents are covered with your brine. Let sit in the fridge for at least 7 days…. If you taste them before, they will taste way to salty! After a week in the fridge they are ready. They last for a very, very long time in the fridge! I have kept them in there for many, many months and we’ve always been fine! But use your best judgement about how long to keep them. I promise they won’t be around to wonder, you will love them and soon none will be left!! They taste like a fresh deli dill, if you like that type of pickle! I also use this brine to pickle many things! Carrots, garlic, onions! The options are endless!! ❤️💕 I hope everyone that loves pickles, will give my grannies larder pickles a try….. they are so yummy!! The recipe is from around mid 1850’s. It’s my great, great grandmas (also named Marie, I’m a 8th generation Marie, “Trina Marie”) Our family is from Austria, so from around that region. ❤️💕🙏❤️💕🙏 I love and miss you so much Gramma (what I used to call her) Marie! ❤️💕🙏 She would be SO EXCITED that I gave you all her recipe ❤️💕

I just love bread and butter pickles and can't wait to try them! I spent yesterday rinsing the salt out of 16 pounds of sliced cucumbers. Today is bread and butter pickle day for me. I'm not sure how many I will end up with? God has blessed us with a bountiful garden also. Preparing us for hard times I'm afraid. I pray not though. May the Lord continue to bless you and Mr Brown with good health, and bountiful harvests!✝️❤️🇺🇸

I made my great grandmother’s recipe for the first time a few weeks ago. 3 green bell peppers sliced About a gal of Cucumbers sliced 3 medium size yellow onions sliced 4 cups white granulated sugar 4 cups white vinegar 1/2 cup of canning salt 1-1/2 teaspoons celery seed 1-1/4 teaspoons mustard seed 1-1/4 teaspoons turmeric Place sugar, vinegar and spiced in pot, bring to boil and take off heat. Once cool it’s ready to jar up. Note, I skip the step of putting salt on the cucumbers and sitting in the fridge.

My grandma ‘marinated’ everything! She was Sicilian and from a poor family. She pickled tomatoes, mushrooms squash. But she taught me first with olives. We would buy them raw, then kinda smash them with an old milk bottle. Aside from the garlic, she would cut up celery and put that together with the vinegar, but she added some olive oil as well. They stayed in the fridge for months! Can’t tell you how many times I got caught sneaking a few bits! Thank you for this recipe. I have some cucumbers from my sister’s and daughter’s gardens - but sadly I now live in an apartment. But I’m going to use that recipe tmrw.

Finished off a jar this morning from your recipe. The only thing I did different was used last year's brine but added more sugar and the turmeric like you said. I didn't have mustard seed but stirred in a squirt of yellow mustard while the brine was simmering. Tasted really good! Somewhere I read a clean green oak leaf added to the jar keeps the pickles crisp too. Seemed to work! 🌳

Miss Lori, great reminder of how we can add pickles to solution in jar to keep from losing them. I will make a batch of cucumbers and onions in a solution of apple cider vinegar salt and pepper in our fridge, usually when the Vidalia onions come out. When we get those almost gone there is no way I want to throw out the solution so I just buy more and add to it but like you say, if I have bought one of those English cucumbers for a salad but just too tired or busy to make the salad, if I notice it’s beginning to get a soft end or such, I will go ahead and slice it up to save it. Vinegars are not cheap like they were many years ago, and sometimes I would get that vinegar solution right on(doing this by eyeball) and you couldn’t stand to toss it. Thank you again for all the sharing you do. I thank God for sending you to my home page one day. I have shared you on my Facebook page and wrote a little bit about you, telling my friends they might like you guys as much as I do. 😊A faithful subscriber sending you love and blessings ❤😊

My favorite pickles as well. I have never made them, never even canned anything. But these look easy enough to make. I have a cucumber plant that is producing nicely. Thus far we have just eaten them as a salad. I bought cucumber seeds, but they look nothing like the package picture, ended up being classic pickling cukes. They are wonderful in flavor and crispy. If the crop keeps going well, I'll make a few jars of bread and butter cucumbers as per this recipe. Thank you very much.
