I was born and raised in southern louisiana. Learned long time ago if your beans are too soupy just smash some against the side of the pot. They will thicken right up.

Are you can just leave them on there to cook slow and they'll thicken up on their own and I think that's always the best way. I love beans I'm from Louisiana Monday's was my favorite day for beans and rice.

Ms Lori I have watched you for about a year or more and I dearly love these vids. This is by far my favorite of all your blessed hands have made to this day. This video gave me Christmas at grandma's house once again. This is saying a lot coming from a 60 year old man who gave up on Christmas a long time ago. To see a young lady such as yourself cooking like grandma did, a meal that grandma would have made and speaking like grandma did has brought back warmth and memories of my youthful days. Thank you so much. Thank you

When I came home from kindergarten for lunch, my Mom would have butter beans waiting for me. She always buttered bread and then put the butter beans on top. You are the first person to do this that I have seen. What great memories from over 60 years ago! To this day, I will have butter beans and it always is a connection to my Mom who passed almost 20 years ago. Thank you for cherished reminder!

I made a big pot of chicken and noodles, mashed potatoes and garden corn last night, & a huge pot of vegetable beef soup this morning. If we lose power we have some goodies already to reheat on top of the stove. Yum !!!! Thank youfor being you !!!! Stay safe & warm !!!! Enjoy loving on those babies !!!!

The food looks so good. I remember my aunt cooking on her wood cookstove. She raised 6 children in that house. Number seven came along after the kitchen was modernized. The old stove was sent to the washhouse where it served as a heat source and water heater for years. I took baths in a big tub in the washhouse staying cozy and warm before going back into the big house thru the snow. Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Hi Miss Lori- I thought of you this morning- I was attempting to make cinnamon toast. I toasted the bread, buttered it, reached in the cabinet and grabbed my cinnamon sugar. Gave the toast a very generous sprinkle. As I'm putting my "cinnamon sugar" back in the cabinet I notice my container of cinnamon sugar on the shelf. I looked at what I had in my hand and yep, you guessed it-garlic powder! I thought well, Miss Lori would call that a happy accident. I hope you and yours have a wonderful Christmas and New Year!

Love it …I cook my bean similar all day with a salt pork (white or pinto) Someone taught me a recipe that I do every so often it’s called everything but the kitchen sink in the beans. You start out with the beans and the salt pork an hour later add a couple of chicken legs, another hour later add some red potatoes and when everything’s done Got a meal with the beans just make a pot of rice oh and we had jalapeño in the beans a little bit but it is so good I don’t make it too often but when I do, that’s the meal beans, the chicken legs and some rice. It is so good I’ve made it for people the red potatoes do not disintegrate think the starch in the beans helps it.

Basically the same as I do my beans , except after my children became teenagers they asked for more onion flavoring. I put a whole onion to boil in the soup & fished it out when I served up the soup. Recently I was visiting my oldest son & he made the beans with 4 small floating onions ! He said he & his brother s would fuss over the onion s when they were kids so he just puts plenty of onions , It tasted great especially because my son cooked & baked some sourdough bread that was better tacan any I make. 😅

We grew up eating a lot of beans and potatoes and cornbread. Sometimes the beans were cooked like you just did, on top of the stove, but sometimes they were put into a clay crockery type pot special made for beans ( I don't know if one can buy those crock pots anymore ) often our beans had molasses also added for flavor, then put in the oven and baked all day. We also used fresh chopped onion rather than dried. I know they were so good however they were done. Thanks for sharing this recipe and the popcorn cornbread Ms. Lori 👍😀

I love white beans, but I've never had them with jowls. My mom used bacon or fatback. She always meticulously sorted her beans after supper, then rinsed them good and soaked in water overnight. Then she rinsed again and pressure cooked or slow cooked them the next day. My papaw used to help his neighbor to slaughter hogs in the fall. In trade for his help, he was paid in pork (hams, bacon, fat back, etc. ). Papaw hung his hams in the smokehouse and cured them himself. I recon he got enough for the most of the year.

This meal takes me back to my youth. My Momma cooked her beans just like you do. Low and slow. And I’m like Mr. Brown when it comes to chicken legs. My favorite way to eat them is when they’re cold. We ate plenty of beans. We were a family of seven and my Momma was a stay at home Mom. We didn’t have much money so we had beans and cornbread with fried potatoes at least three times a week. But on Sundays after church we had fried chicken and occasionally we had roast. I don’t understand the concern of taking off your wedding rings to cook. I promise you, none of my grandmothers took off their rings to cook and neither did my Mom. They put out the best home cooked meals and not a single one of us got sick. I’m pretty sure that hot grease killed any “germs” that was on that food. Thank you for taking me back to my Momma’s and my grandmother’s kitchens. 🥰❤️

Mmmmm yummy Ms. Lori you made one of my most favorite meals! White beans are one of my favorite beans to eat! Next would be the pinto beans. Those were some of the biggest chicken drumsticks I've ever seen! They looked amazing! My middle son doesn't care for beans that much so we normally don't make beans. But we are having a ham for our New Years Day dinner and what's left over I want to make a big pot of white beans & ham. Definitely will be using garlic and onion in them too. Thank you so much Ms. Lori! Merry Christmas to you all and a Happy New Year too! Love to you all!

And when you do dishes it cleans your rings. If you don't think they're clean enough get a cheap toothbrush and scrub them .

Beans with good cornbread is comfort food and wonderful with a thick broth. When the power would go out in the winter Momma would cook on the wood stove. So many memories you brought back. Merry Christmas! Going to be cold in the hills of Tennessee also. Love your pot holder.
