Hi, I'm 66 years old and have never canned before. My new canner has been sitting on a shelf for over six months. I have been scared to use it. Today was the day. I have different peas and beans I'd like to can and started with black-eyed peas. I followed the directions as I watched the video. They turned out awesome as all the tops sealed. I am so happy. I think I can do this again!!!! Thanks for posting these help videos. 😃

My Dad came from a very poor family, they lived in Missouri and had nothing literally. My Grandmother had a pot of beans and biscuits everyday and that’s what they ate. He and his brothers used to make bean sandwiches out of biscuits and beans and that’s what they had for lunch at school. My wonderful Dad was born in 1917 so it was in the 20’s when he was in school. He said all the kids teased them for what they brought each day . Which still breaks my heart. Bullies have been around for a long time. I do cook beans and make bean soup and bean patties for sandwiches and love them . Look forward to see how differently you make them .Love you and your husband may God continue to bless you and your family. Thank you for taking your precious time and sharing with all of us.

I live in Arkansas too....Huntsville. I'm 71 and widowed now and my wife and I canned most of our veggies and I still do. I don't like trying to do beans for a daily meal so canning them is the only way to go. Last year I did pintos, kidney, green and Great Northerns. The green beans are long gone and the pintos are down to about 4 pints. I made some delicious Navy bean soup last year too and it's gone now. I used my memory from my Navy days to make that. Obviously I need to adjust the amounts I can as my 2 grandsons can devour pintos like they are going extinct! They also have some strange food issues so the store bought canned stuff isn't healthy for them when they are full of salt and BPH (?). They can eat my home canned and preserved foods so it's a double good thing. I also find canning is fun and relaxing. It was more fun with her around but that's not going to happen. How many beans do you put in quarts?
@margiemelendy6857
@margiemelendy6857 3 жыл бұрын
I put a cup of beans in a quart 1/2 cup in pints. That's pinto, black or great northern, cranberry, ect. If you do Limas I'm sure they would be less since they swell so much.

When I can meats, if I have the room in the canner (and I usually do) I "throw in" beans to fill it up. Edit: I do can up beans alone, too. We like to have canned cannellini, black, chick peas, lentils, and anasazi. I more and more appreciate controlling what's in our food. That's not to say I don't purchase canned beans from the store (Goya) when it's a good buy, just to round out the pantry. Thank you for all you do, Mrs Brown.

I live in the city in a subdivision and just started pressure canning this month (I’m 54!) - I’ve done jams and tomatoes for 30 years but with KZbin I’m finally brave enough to try pressure canning. Thank you for expanding my community and helping me learn new skills. 2 years ago I hatched a dozen Japanese quail eggs and I’m in love with how quiet and productive they are. They have replaced my chickens. And they are as easy to dispatch, clean, process and cook as a rainbow trout. No plucking necessary and they need very little space.

My daughter and I had horrible adverse reactions to all kinds of foods when we lived in CA. We moved to Arizona around 2005 and I had always wanted to do more cooking. Little by little, I started cooking from scratch to avoid all the chemicals added to processed foods. Then I began canning some items that I wanted cooked my way, with no salt, wheat, etc. One of our favorites is Butter Beans with ham pieces. I love gouhlash with zucchini and tomatoes but my daughter doesn't so I do pints for me. Different preferences is no problem now that I have the pantry. It even saved us when we had to go into lock down and all our purchases had to be delivered. I am proud to say my beginner's pantry fed us really well even when I got sick and I am still not completely well. So, Thank You, to all of the wonderful channels like this one who share with their whole hearts. Y'all made a huge difference in our lives.💖

I love this. You bring the idea of homesteading to any home even city life. I always grew up in a city living in a neighborhood but my Dad always rototilled up a sizable garden in the lawn of the new home and we grew tomatoes, onions, green beans, carrots, peas at a minimum. Then mom would buy peaches, pears, berries, cherries, apples and more tomatoes and can much of the garden and boxes and boxes of fruit and stored it all in the garage. We ate off it all year long. It was always a sad day when it would run out and we had to eat store-bought veggies and fruits. Mom ground her own flour for bread too. So we had stored hard wheat and honey. That is how my parents could afford 6 kids. We were a bunch of healthy kids.

I watched numerous videos on your channel and I have been canning dry beans and I'm in love with them, I make my own chili beans, I have made canned Ham and bean soups, I'm getting ready to make what is called cowboy stew that is a mix of every dry bean you can find. You can use stew beef, hamburger, ham or chicken each offers a different twist with different ingredients and tastes. I'm excited to try this cowboy stew with every kind of meat. Had I not seen your pressure canning videos I never would have tried to can them. Thank you so much and I love watching you and Pa Brown. God Bless you and Mr. Brown and I hope and pray you will be able to keep your videos coming. 🌾🌺🌸🌼💕

Swedish canner here. Thanks for sharing! Apart from the economics, as a single dude I appreciate the option of canning beans in 12oz or 350 ish ml jars. Store bought and one pint home canned beans are just to much for me and I end up with jars of leftovers in my fridge. And stuff like Bolognese i do in half pints. Just the perfect portion size on pasta. 👍🏻

I love having my own home canned beans ready to grab for quick meals and starting with dry beans makes it SO easy ... and cheap!. Whenever I'm canning something that uses the same times (90 min quarts or 75 min pints) and have extra room in the canner I always peek into my pantry and see which type beans (navy, great northern, black, red, pinto) I have the least of. I then measure out the beans, add water, a pinch of bouillon (instead of salt), and complete my canner load. That way I make full use of my canner and rarely have to make a special run for just beans unless I am doing something special like baked or BBQ beans.

Oh Miss Lori, I love all your videos but this is one of my all time favorites. I enjoyed you talking and explaining at the beginning...and then showing us. I've never canned dry beans and we eat a lot of beans. I usually make a pot of beans every week and freeze of any leftovers. But now I can see the benefit to canning them. Wishing you and Mr. Brown a great day from way over here in Oregon. ❤

I live in town and my husband is disabled, we don't have the space for a lot of canned food. So I can those things that I have to for storage and I cook my dry beans in a pressure cooker. 1/2 dried beans, 2 cups of water and 2tsp bacon grease after the pot gets full pressure cook 25 minutes. Of you soak the beans it only takes 10 minutes under pressure. ❤️

Anyways, my husband and I started our homestead 3 years ago. We nearly have finished building our house. We are NOT a young couple! I am 59 and he is too. I work off the homestead too. I canned up 30 quarts and 12 pints of taco soup earlier this summer and I will be canning more later this month since my family can put away 2 quarts at a setting. And I canned split peas and ham, and lentils with ham in the spring, right after Easter when we had a ham done. I also canned white beans and ham in that canning session too.
