I love my Whirly Pop! It actually makes a batch of popcorn faster than any other kind of popper. You can use less oil than the instructions say, and it'll still work well. You can also put butter and salt into it as soon as the popping stops, and turn the crank to distribute them through the warm popcorn. (You should wash it after that, though.) I've had my Whirley Pop for a long time, and a couple of years ago the plastic gears on the lid broke. I wrote to the company, and they sent me a whole new lid for free!

I bought the Whirly Popper a couple of years ago and after a lifetime of using different poppers this is hands down the best I've ever seen. It is quick and easy and leaves almost no unpopped kernels. I bought the stainless model and it is easy to clean up too. Using two tablespoons of popping oil and adding a bit of movie popcorn salt directly to the popper produces great popcorn. Last year at Christmas I gave one to each of our families and they all love them too.

Great review! I read an article somewhere (perhaps Consumer Reports?) about popcorn. It said that the unpopped kernels really had to do with the freshness of the popcorn more than anything else. One might think popcorn could last forever, since it is dried, but it does not. It still contains moisture inside the kernels, which is what makes it pop. It dries out, and then it won't pop. Older packages of popcorn, whether they've been sitting on the grocery store shelves or our own shelves, do not pop as well. Fresher ones do. Thanks for the great video!

As an avid popcorn eater, I LOVE the whirley pop!! It''s super fast, every kernel ends up popped, and you save the steps having to slide the pot all around or pick it up and swirl it. Try making a pot dry, no oil. You need to keep it moving or some kernels will toast on one side and not pop, but it works pretty much as well as with oil. The gadget would probably be perfect for dry. Microwave? I don't have many good things to say about it, it's fun to watch, the smell is inviting.
@lovecinnamonxx6 жыл бұрын
Brian Landers what in the world is low-fat oil? 😂
@jbeargrr6 жыл бұрын
Yeah, no such thing as low-fat oil. I grew up popping corn in a cast iron skillet, with a dome-type lid to give it room to bounce around. We always put the oil in first, with a single kernal. As soon as it popped, we dump in the rest of the corn, and put the lid on. It starts popping very quickly, and we shook the pan the whole time it popped. When popping slowed way down, we stopped and dumped it into a big bowl immediately. Can't let it sit in cast iron, it holds the heat, the corn will burn. I don't use microwave popcorn, they put all kinds of bad crap in it. I do have an air popper that works great, got it for $1 at a thrift store.
@cowboybob70936 жыл бұрын
jbeargrr, Yeah, the oil/corn together, I didn't get. Sure, I mentioned "dry," but oil or dry, it seems adding popcorn to a hot skillet (etc) works best, dry, oil, no matter.

Things I have done since I got my Whirly-Pop: Made clarified butter kettle corn. Used beef tallow as oil (sparingly!) and seasoned with a beef ramen noodle packet. Mixed clarified butter and coconut oil, colored with annatto and seasoned with fine salt. Bacon grease and seasoned with alder smoked salt. Used oil with a touch of chili oil (don't breathe the steam!) and sesame oil, seasoned with Chinese five spice powder. Olive oil, seasoned with parmesan cheese and rosemary. Pop in oil but season with brown butter and Himalayan pink salt. All of these could be done with a pot, sure, but I love the speed and ease of the Whirly-Pop. You never have to wash it unless you make kettle corn in it. You just rinse it with hot water and wipe it out. Anyway, I am a big fan of mine. Your mileage may vary.

These sound like some real popcorn innovations! I have never dreamed of BEEF POPCORN! I happen to have a jar of home-rendered tallow, too. Annato oil or annato lard ("achiotina" in the store) sounds GREAT. Well, a little something to look forward to.

I have one of those and love it! My favourite thing to do is melt butter and (cane) sugar in it before adding the popcorn kernels. It makes the most awesome caramel corn 😀
@astrid64966 жыл бұрын
I have made it the way you describe too, but the caramel is a lot thicker and sweeter. It's a completely different taste. When I make it in the kettle, you just get a thin coating and it is just slightly sweetened... You can eat a lot more without getting sick haha. And yes, it can very easily burn. I would be lying if I said I haven't messed up and let it go too long, you really have to stay on top of it the whole time. For me personally it's worth it though, the flavour is incredibly addictive!

I have one of these and I enjoy it. They also say not to clean it every time just wipe it out with a paper towel because it'll season the pot over time similar to cast iron. I still wish I could find a decent air popper, the one I had before died and it was great.

This popper looks so fast and easy that I thought it could be worth the space it takes. Perhaps it could be used also to make croutons, just figure out a right temperature and give the spiced bread cubes whirl every couple of minutes. It would be easier than making them on a baking sheet and opening a hot oven door to toss the cubes around. I am sure there would be other ways to use it also. I don't know where I read this and why it hasn't come up elsewhere but if you throw a few test kernels in to pop and then turn off the heat and put the rest of the kernels in and wait 30 seconds before turning the heat on again, it helps the kernels cook more evenly and you won't burn your popcorn and have uncooked kernels. @@ortzinator You have low standards for what constitutes "great results." Canola oil is practically flavorless, so the only thing you'll taste is salt. In addition to salt, popcorn should also have a butter flavor, which only comes from butter or the chemicals in butter that are responsible for the buttery flavor (diacetyl and acetoin).

It is now 2022 and I just bought the Whirly Pop maker after a friend told me she had one for years and really liked it. Made some Theater Popcorn with the Whirly Popper and worked great, tasted great, and easy to use. Was also easy for me to clean. I now have Theater Popcorn to eat while watching my streaming movies. Note: Before: I was looking at other Amazon Air Poppers and did not like the way they worked plus there were allot of negative reviews on Amazon on the Air Poppers. Also, I hate Microwave Popcorn and was told this kind of popcorn is worse for us cause of the ingredients. Thanks for the video. Note your video: Whether you cook the popcorn in a Pot or the Whirly Popper, the popcorn should taste just the same. it is the same cooking process. The Whirly may keep from burning some of the kernels that sit at the bottom of the pot by moving the kernels around while cooking. I still prefer the Whirly over just using a Pot. But that is your choice. Sure, the Whirly costs more, and I use it just for making popcorn.

Love my Whirly Pop. I’ve had it for years. The gear broke on top and the company sent me a new gear kit free and super easy to replace. Great company. We use coconut oil. Makes a nice subtle coconut flavored popcorn.

The theaters use coconut oil to pop their popcorn gives it that signature movie theater popcorn flavor
@jbeargrr6 жыл бұрын
Bryce Solar, coconut oil has no flavor, it's the salt and artificial butter flavor that makes movie popcorn taste the way it does. Coconut oil is better for you, but it won't taste like movie corn. I'd rather put real melted butter on mine, anyway.

Can also use this thing to make roasted nuts. I hear it's possible to use it to roast coffee beans on too. Originally bought this to do some coffee bean roasting but never had any luck with it. But now I love it for what it was intended, for popping popcorn.

We love our whirly pop! it has ruined us for bag popcorn. that stufd no longer has a place in our house :) We do have a larger kitchen, so we don't worry about storing it. for me it isn't about the taste or texture, as it's the same with a pot, for me it's the time! We usually have a lot of people over for movie nights, so it's faster to make multiple bowls and still have them be hot for everyone!

I remember as a kid mom would buy pre-packaged popcorn pouches. They came with two attached plastic sections. One had the popcorn and salt and the other side had a yellowish gel that looked like butter. Just put them in a pot and go. They were pretty good; the oily stuff gave it a nice buttery flavor.

For those that like the speed of microwave popcorn without all the concern of the chemicals used in fake butter flavoring, you can just take a brown paper sack - like you use for lunch bags - put in a couple tablespoons of oil, a couple tablespoons of popcorn, and a few shakes of whatever flavoring or spices you might like in there, roll down the top of the bag a couple times and secure with a single staple. Shake it up a bit and throw it in your microwave (flat side of staple facing up) for about 1.5 - 2 minutes...timing depends on your microwave wattage. Shake up the bag again before opening. There you have home made microwave popcorn with whatever flavorings you want. For those worrying about the staple in the microwave, the staple is too small and not curved enough to cause arcing in the microwave.I've done hundreds of bags in various microwaves over the years and have never set anything on fire yet.

I am currently weaning my son from breastfeeding and this was the only thing to stop his meltdown at bedtime ...this isn't the first time your channel has caught his attention and stopped a meltdown. He watches it without hardly blinking 😊 just thought I'd let you know how you helped a worn out mama and an upset baby. Thanks

My dad has a popper like that (not sure if it’s that brand) but he puts butter in with the kernels and the butter gets browned at toasty with the popcorn and tastes AMAZING. It’s my favorite kind of popcorn.

I grew up with a whirly pop and it’s Very fun for older kids to help make popcorn with ! We used it all the time for movies and snack time. 🍿and for glasses 👓 I’d say go bold! I got a fun red frame and I love em. I think they all look nice though 🤓

If you're making popcorn using only oil and kernels you don't need a stirring mechanism. You need a stirring mechanism if you're making popcorn like they do at movie theaters, i.e., oil, kernels, and Flavacol (flavored popcorn salt). Without a stirring mechanism the Flavacol mostly just settles on the bottom of the kettle with not much of it ending up on the popped popcorn. Also, so-called "unitaskers" are a good thing; i.e., "the right tool for the job." Take a look at a professional auto mechanic's tools sometime and you'll see tons of so-called "unitaskers." There are special tools for driving in wheel bearing races, for separating ball joints, for compressing strut springs, for compressing valve springs, for expanding exhaust tubing, for flaring brake lines, for bending brake lines, for removing windshield wiper arms, for removing steering wheels, for working windshields into their gaskets, for removing snap rings, for cleaning battery terminals, and so on. I think it's hilarious that Alton Brown has managed to convince so many people to adopt his own bizarre idiosyncrasy.

Grew up with a popper very similar only it was enameled. We also got one of these at a thrift store and found the metal to thin, so better results with a heavier bottomed one.

I generally agree with you about unitaskers, but my air popper is one of my favorite kitchen gadgets. It doesn't require oil and you cannot burn the popcorn, they're pretty inexpensive (usually well under $20), and no bigger than a water jug. It was the first thing I purchased when I had my own kitchen because it's just so much easier than doing it on the stove (or setting it on fire in the microwave).

I have a Whirley Popper snd I love it. I also have a very small kitchen and I think it's totally worth the space it takes up. It's fast and almost every time it pops all of the kernels. So worth it!

The crank popper worked good during the winter. We use to heat with wood in a cooking cabin stove. The kids loved to fix their own popcorn this way. We also made a lotta sweet kettle corn. We found out that after it is full of sweet stuff stuck inside that if you leave it in a shed the rats will clean the insides for you👍🤪. After that it simply became a dish to feed chicken from. They are excellent to take on camp trips. Or just kids in general and the kids who are pushing 50 years old.

We have had our whirley pop for years! It's a staple in our kitchen. Three bits of advice. #1 don't wash with anything but water, soapy tasting popcorn isn't good. #2 try coconut oil.. it's even better and healthier!! #3 pour it into a paper bag and add Morton popcorn salt.

I make a lot of popcorn and have really enjoyed my Whirley Pop for the past 5 years. The lid can be a little bit of a pain to clean if you pop with coconut oil like they use at the theaters though. People also use them for roasting coffee beans.
@emb50912 жыл бұрын
The Whirley Pop is actually multipurpose like a regular pot....you can take the lid off of the Whirley Pop and use it's pot as a basic pot. Some people roast coffee beans in it, and I because of that I bet it's great at roasting nuts too. You can even make soup/stew in it and use the crank to stir when needed.

I’m obsessed with popcorn with Parmesan, loads of white pepper and a bit of msg 🤤
@leonardpearlman40173 жыл бұрын
MSG makes everything better! In Korean markets they have super salt (which has some MSG in it) and Super Seasoning which is MSG plus the guanylates and the other thing, this is what you actually find in Ramen, and snacks, and seasoned soy sauce and such. You use less of the super seasoning than plain MSG. Called "Miwon" I think, the super Miwon is more expensive than regular MSG of course, but I think it's worth it and you don't use much. People are so funny about MSG. I sometimes say "If you were Japanese, your GREAT GRANDMOTHER might have bought Aji-no-moto BRAND, it's still in the store today! Where was I? Oh, yeah. I'm going to try your suggestion!

I like to use a wok. I switched to the wok after watching alton brown pop popcorn in a metal mixing bowl. The wok has the same general shape and a built in handle. My parner prefers an airpopper.
