OMFG. I am 55 years old and am so clueless about household repair that I have never tried a DIY in my life. I waste so much money on “experts” who always tell me I need a new unit. With this fridge, I was SO pissed that my ice machine stopped working only 5 weeks after my warranty so I had to try this. This video was so helpful (along with another video about how to splice a wire 😬) and with all the positive comments, I thought, I can do this. Well, you should have heard me scream when the first ice cube dropped. THANK YOU!

THANK YOU!!! I never comment on social media things but this video saved me so much money and further frustration. Also, I wanted to comment for those who come across this issue in the future: don’t panic if you fix the wires and still don’t get ice right away. Give it about 24 hours or so before you continue to panic or troubleshoot further. It took my fridge about 15 hours from the time I was finished repairing the wires to begin making ice again. At first I worried I had done the repair incorrectly and there was something else to fix, and frustratedly told myself I’d try again the next day, but in the middle of the night I heard ice dump into the bin. It would not be a lie to say I jumped up and did a little dance once I realized what I heard! THANK YOU AGAIN!! Shame on Whirlpool but thank God for community and those like yourself who are willing to share knowledge with their neighbor, even if we’re spread across the world

Thanks for the video. I replaced our icemaker a year ago after it stopped working. New unit still did not work. Resorted to dumping bagged ice into the hopper and continued to use the ice dispenser until it recently stopped working. While researching the problem again I came across your video. Sure enough, all but one of the wires were broken. Spliced all of the wires back together and now we are making ice again!

Great video. I spliced in new wires (soldered and shrink tubed both ends) for all eight wires that were going to my ice maker and ice dispenser. Everything works like a champ now. With some careful routing, and stress relief (I used a few well-placed zip ties), I have a wire harness which should dramatically outlast the original design. You saved me a lot of money, hard telling what an appliance tech would have replaced (and charged me for), before finally figuring out what the real problem was.

Thank you @motofun for this great video. I had 4 broken wires. I repaired them by adding a little extra 18 gauge twist wire in between the break and now have ice again. Note that 3 wires carry no voltage but still works. (green, blue and gray/orange).

This is a design flaw not only with Whirlpool, but also Kitchenaid and other side by side refrigerators with wiring being compromised in the door. You explained it well. Have had our now 10 year old Kitchenaid Side by Side repaired maybe 7-8 years ago for the first time by a repair man, then have been doing it ourself to reconnect severed wires every 6 months or so for the past 7 years. The repair always works but is temporary until the wires are severed again from opening and closing the freezer door, so beware! We try to not open the door to get ice from the hopper and only from the dispenser to slow down the wear on the wiring at the bottom. We are getting close to running out of wires to resplice each time, but knowing this is a flaw, it has given us additional years of use with a perfectly good refrigerator in every other way. We were told by the repair man 7 years ago, that when buying a refrigerator next time, to buy one with icemaker totally inclosed inside the freezer potion (no parts extending into the door (which doesn't allow ice dispensing from the door, but still gives you access to opening the main door for ice) without wires being severed over time. So for now, we fix the wires every 6 months or so when the ice stops dispensing, but we are getting close to running out of wires to splice back together and will have to put out $$$ for a new refrigerator in the near future. Next purchase will not have the same design flaw with location of any icemaker portion into the door.! Too bad that major companies still continue to design icemakers after 10 years with this same wiring flaw. It keeps our repairmen in business. But knowing it is also a do-it-yourself repair is significant. Best of luck to all having this problem.

Every six months, that sucks. That means, mine should be failing again soon. Make sense it will occur again and again. 🙁
@marlenefenn67322 жыл бұрын
@@motofun72 unfortunately it will occur again, but ours seems to still dispense ice, so we just refill the hopper inside the door from a bad of ice from our garage freezer. It buys some time till we finally repair the wires again. Maybe your repairs will last longer. 🤞😊
@hermantrivilino1689 Жыл бұрын
The problem is the cheap wires used by the manufacturer. They get bent back and forth every time you open the freezer door and eventually they break from the repeated bending. You need good stranded wire with silicone insulation. And you need to make the wire splices with solder seal wire connectors.

Thank you for this! Our 4 year old unit stopped making ice a few days ago. We put a new filter in first to make sure the water pressure was adequate. Next was to replace the whole icemaking unit. Then we saw a single cut wire at the bottom of the door. It was a very clean cut so we thought it might be for a function we don't have on our fridge, In desperation, my hubby joined the 2 ends and a few hours later we had ice!

My fridge is now back and working. A couple tips for those who take on this task: 1. Take the freezer door off the freezer. The cables un plug behind the cover at the bottom of the unit and it's a lot easier to re-solder any wires with the door sitting on a workbench. 2. I took the clip off and ended up feeding the wires through a 2 inch section of pex in an effort to keep this from happening again.
