Sir, it’s years later and you’re still a hero. Thank you!! I kept trying to figure out where a fuse was blown. It wasn’t a fuse. The red wire at the bottom was completely severed. Whirlpool used ALUMINUM WIRE in my fridge. I assume it’s only a matter of time until I have to replace it or disassemble the door. I’ve also had failures in my whirlpool stove and dishwasher. All “middle grade” appliances with failures in less than 5 years. I’m not impressed, Whirlpool.

Thank you SO MUCH for making this video - you saved me a lot of anguish. I wish I had seen it before I diagnosed the valves etc. on the back. Here are some notes on the repair. I just had this problem and a yellow wire for the ice maker broke. The cover of the cable bundle broke because the bottom cover has sharp edges and little room to move back and forth. F- design! I stripped the wire 1/4" on both ends and soldered a little jumper of about 3/4" in. Make a little hook on all the wires with needlenose pliers after tinning them. Solder together after squeezing the hooks. It is a pretty intricate little soldering job since the space is tight. I use hot melt glue to insulate the solder repair since it also gives a little mechanical strength. Then I wrapped the bundle with 2 layers of electrical tape, followed by a plastic spiral wrap and cable ties on the ends. Now the bundle can move a bit. I took an Xaxto knife to the plastic cover to smooth the burrs on it and carve a relief for the cable to slide better without breaking the insulation. Should last a few years. Shame on Whirlpool for such a lousy design.

Exactly the issue i was looking to fix and exactly the way i guessed i needed to fix it. Thank you. BUT, WTF, this is a $45-$65 replacement harness that seems to be a common point of failure. People need to complain about this and let others know not to buy models with door water and ice units.

Jonathan Thanks for this video. I also replaced the water valve, icemaker and LED board after listening to the experts. Then I found your video and I found two wires broken under the door. THANKS! Since fixing my problem I have found lots of people have this problem with the wiring harness but the parts people don't say anything about this problem. Again Thanks for taking the time to share this fix!

Thanks for the heads up. My side-by-side refrigerator had the same issue. I will warn everyone that one wire was obviously broken, I had others that looked OK, but when I tried to measure continuity from one end of the cable to the other, they were bad (open). I replaced all 8 wires that went to my ice maker and ice dispenser. Works great now. The wire harness now has plenty of slack, and should last longer than the original design.

My wife and kids would like to thank you for taking the time to post this fix. We have been filling ice trays for a couple years now and I stumbled across your video today. I checked the wires and sure enough I had 4 broken wires. Using wire connectors I got them back together and now its working like a champ. You are the man!

Hello!!! This video is fantastic!!! I just made a pause on what I was doing to say many thanks to you. I've been struggling with my ice maker for a few days. Yesterday, I found a guy to bring to Brazil a brand new icemaker to replace the one that have. A technician told me to replace it. But down here it costs more than 300 dollars. And then... just before buying one, your video just popped in front of me. When I checked the wires, the green and the white ones were broken. Thank you so much to share your experience with us!!!! Congratulations for doing that.

Seriously wish I had found this video earlier. I had just about given up on fixing my ice maker after replacing the motor, entire ice assembly, checking all the solenoids, and even defrosting the whoel thing in case it was a blocked//iced line. Without ice for an entire year until I found your video!

I just wanted to let you know that I found this video when searching for the solution to a “broken” ice maker on my Whirlpool fridge and this was the exact issue I had. I had two wires broken and with a little soldering, extra wire (to extend it a bit), and heat shrink tubing we got it fixed in about an hour. You saved me a ton of work and potential expense if I’d tried to replace parts that were fine. Thank you for making this video! My model is: whirlpool wrs571cihw04

Our Whirlpool (exact same model) stopped making ice when it was less than 1year old. My wife recently gave me an ultimatum... fix the ice-maker or we buy a new fridge! They are just way too expensive right now!! Thanks for this video... I'm gonna start looking into this right away! We're getting tired of fooling around with ice cube trays! (Wondering if Whirlpool ever had a recall on this!! Seems hazardous if a live AC wire breaks!)

Thanks for posting this. Mine had 4 out of the six wires completely broken loose with soot from arcing all over the end of one of them, the fifth one ready to break with insulation already separated, and the sixth still OK, at least on the outside. I suspect the wire itself is ready to break inside the insulation, though. Couldn't see any of this because of the black braided nylon sheath and inner white fabric sheath, so I wouldn't have thought to look there without your video, and probably would have taken the door apart. BTW, an easy check to see if voltage is getting to the icemaker is to pop the plastic cover off of the icemaker motor/timer (right side), and check between the L and N testpoints on the face of the motor. Should have 110VAC between those two testpoints. Not impressed much with the wiring design and components of this model after seeing this failure.

You might want to replace the harness or resection the broken wire so that the repair junctions are not in the same place that the breaks occur. I soldered and put shrink tubes on each wire as well as the bundle. The fox lasted less than one week.

Wow. I can’t believe I found a KZbin video for my EXACT issue. I have no idea how to do electrical. Can I just ask an electrician to connect the frayed wires? Appliance tech said I should just replace the fridge.
@reed8572 жыл бұрын
Please don't replace your fridge before you try this. Of course, you can pay an electrician $50-$100 to fix this or you can buy a wire kit at Walmart, Amazon, or any place that sells tools. If you can use plyers you can use a crimp with wires. www.amazon.com/Gardner-Bender-Terminal-Stripper-Crimper/dp/B00004WLJO/ref=asc_df_B00004WLJO/?tag=hyprod-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=198070022856&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=4662290347537243904&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1014028&hvtargid=pla-348677487586&psc=1

If you leave excess wire down there it’s going to constantly be binding. You are going to have to wrap that extremely well or shorten that wire/don’t use that quick connect. In my experience, anything that moves like that is supposed to have a short distance for movement in a wire or wires. Just thought I would mention it. Obviously I’m too late but…

I have a similar model. Was able to test the auger motor determining that it was ok. I used the wiring schematic found in the grille. I also found the snapped wires in the harness below the door. I used crimp type connectors and repaired the dispenser. But the connector failed again. Anyone know how to disassemble the inner door panel to expose the wiring harness? That would allow a proper splice in a non stressed area. I’ve had a 50 year old oscillating fan that never failed. Back and forth, hundred thousand times. This whirlpool design fails after a few openings.

I have the same fridge but Kenmore brand. First time it happened it was under warranty. Tech came out, never found the broken wires but told me the warranty doesn't cover the door. What! That's where the electronics are! After he left I worked on it myself and found the exact same thing. They run the wire bundle right at the hinge of the door. Every time you open the freezer you pinch the wire bundle. I've fixed it 3 times now, even with extra slack it will still damage the wires eventually. At least I know what the problem is then it stops working. Bad design!

Same problem here. Had to splice together around 5 or 6 wires the first time. Second and third time it’s just one wire (black). Now it’s stopped working again and I’ve triple checked and see no tears or rips. Maddening.

Ditto. Done mine 3 times. Soldered….covered with heat shrink tubing and electrical tape. 6 months - a year later…broken again. Wish I could figure out how to remove the plastic inner door panel so I could replace the whole harness
@gitsinglow81153 ай бұрын
Solid wire replacement will not solve problem. The arc of the wire will break wire again. I cut about a foot of the OEM wire & replace with same guage & color of high flexibility silicon wire (the type of wire used in drones).

Thanks I was gonna ask if they made a beefed up replacement harness. I fixed 3 or 4 wires a couple years ago and it quit again. Used to work at car dealer and a recurring problem like this would result in a superseded part, usually a finer braid of wire as a replacement. But sounds like no replacement for these, thanks.
