Thanks for the video! And more importantly, thank you for not skipping any steps in the video. I'm having the same issue with the washer door hinge. Failed (broke) in the same exact spot. In the few months leading up to the failure, I noticed some strong resistance when opening/closing the door, so I suppose that was an indication of the pending hinge failure. Today, when I went to close the door after running a load, I notice the door was completely misaligned with the washer. The hinge remained extended instead of being tucked in allowing for full closure. At this point, I can still manually tuck in the hinge to close the door, but it's a bit of a hassle. And if I forget, I may very well break something else when attempting to close the door.

Excellent repair walkthrough. My torque screws were to size to the new hinge, so did not run into threading issue.

That’s great. So far our new hinge has held up, but I am also a little more gentle on it than I probably was in the past if I’m the one tossing laundry in the machine 😄

It's too bad the whole hinge need to be replaced. I need to buy a Whirlpool Duet Washer so that I can fix it. I always enjoy your DiY projects. Nice work and Happy New Year!

Wow, great video. This is exactly the same thing that failed on my washer hinge. Agree it is weak metal and poor design. Newer models don't have the pivot arm because the door does not have the flair trim. My dryer had the same problem but instead of replacing the hinge I just bought a new hinge and removed the torx screw and put it on the old hinge. I could not find a 25 cent dryer replacement screw after 2 years due to gap design so I had to buy the whole hinge. (Also you can't just replace the WASHER screw because the hinge is integrated). Found a deal on the washer hinge $30 and dryer hinge $20 on Ebay. Thanks for tip on hinge screw size...always something!!

Thanks Matt! At this point my hinge is not broken but it has become extremely hard to swing the door either direction. Does anyone know if any spray lubes will help?
@MattsGarageMiscDIY Жыл бұрын
Worth a shot, maybe try some type of grease rather than a thinner spray lubricant? Unfortunately the hinge mechanism was designed to fail, made of cheap “pot” metal. Good luck!
@AlbeTurner Жыл бұрын
I noted that pot metal piece on there. Looks like one could put a nick in it with a fingernail. Lol. I sprayed a bit of RemOil at top and bottom of the hinge. Helped immensely. Door swings easily now and I know doing so will be a repeatable necessity. YMMV. Again thanks for taking the time to make the video.

It could be because theres water leaking onto the hinge causing corrosion

I just need the pin and wanted to know if it can be replaced?
@MattsGarageMiscDIY Жыл бұрын
I don’t think individual pieces of the hinge are sold, but maybe could be fabricated. These were not designed to last sadly.

Great video how do I obtain the door part to be ordered??

I link to the part I used in the video description which was purchased from Amazon.com

I bought this replaced it. Within 2 months the screws I think because they're in a new plastic hinge completely stripped. So I have to retighten my washing machine screws every 2 weeks. They don't really tight they just spin however they go farther into the hole holding the door better. Very bad mechanism from factory to aftermarket.

My replacement hinge was metal (still pot metal) but it’s held up 4 years now. I will say we are much more careful with it and there is no more slamming the washer door! Best of luck.

Can you update this? From what I'm reading on Amazon. That replacement part is garbage. A lot of people are saying it came broken. Plus that the screw holes are not taped for the screw. How has it held up?
@MattsGarageMiscDIY2 жыл бұрын
Michael, mine is holding up since replacing it a little over 2 years ago. In fairness the factory part is poorly designed, and prone to break (and did) as I recall this replacement was significantly less than the Whirlpool part. Either way, I hope the video gives you an idea of the level of effort to replace. Good luck.

Bought a replacement part on amazon. It came broken in the same place original part is broken. Ordered oem part from whirlpool for $100. Much better quality than amazon one and not broken.

Can the door be reversed?

On my units, it looks like the dryer door could be revered to open the other way but not the washer.

Very few things are built to last these days and many things are not designed to be easy to work on or will require special tools. For me I see the tools as an investment that helps me save significant money when I can tackle a DIY fix. Good luck with your repair! Ask around maybe a friend has a set of Torx screwdrivers you can borrow 👍🏼

Regina, are you viewing KZbin on a desktop computer or mobile phone? On a desktop you need to click “show more” below the brief video description. On a mobile phone there is a downward arrow to the right of the video title. Either way scroll down after exposing the full written description and the link is there. :)
