Whirlpool Kitchenaid Refrigerator Defective Door Open Warning Light

This video shows what was wrong with my Kitchenaid Refrigerator.
The actual replacement was not shown because that took place months ago and I wanted to be 100% sure that the board was the problem.
If someone is going to replace the board, the replacement is very easy.

If the water dispenses then its not the door switch for fridge. Its most likely the freezer door switch. Try to see if it is held up with ice by using a hair dryer or give it a couple of light taps to break up ice crystals that may be giving an error. That was my solution to this same problem

Thank you. In my case, something on the board failed. More than one year has passed and we have had no more issues with the Frig and really like it.

Thanks. I had the same error (and water dispenser working) and have fiddled with the freezer door switch. Good news is fridge is still cooling. I do like the fridge but have had poor experience with Kitchenaid large appliances buying this one against my better judgment. Second time I have had error codes (the last time was an erroneous power outage, or PO), so the jury is still out for me on this thing.

@@jillpozarek7652 For me too. After replacing the board there have been no more issues and everything is functioning. We did some remodeling so I was able to get to the back and clean the dust off of the cooling fins. That is the only maintenance I probably will do over the years. We shall see how long this refrigerator hangs in there ...

The W in the part number stands for Whirlpool not Westinghouse. Westinghouse was acquired by Electrolux who also makes Frigidaire. Whirlpool makes Kitchenaid, Maytag, Jennaire, Amana and many other brands you would recognize from yesteryear. I’ve been an appliance tech over 40 years, very familiar

You are showing the LED control board but the part number you put up was for the Main control board. I assume you replaced the LED control board to fix the issue (since you are showing it in the video)?

I replaced the lower left board and showed the part numbers that I used to order the part. If the numbers were wrong I apologize but they were the ones that were on the invoice.

@David Prokity Was it just the door ajar light that would stay on or did you also hear the door ajar chime? I’m having an issue with the door ajar light and chime going off randomly. It eventually stops after a while, but will randomly start doing it again. The doors are closed and all of the switches are working properly.

Sorry, somehow I missed your question. Apparently some other units are chiming continuously. Sometimes ours chimed with the "Door Open" chime, but not always. Also, the light would go off randomly and the unit would work properly again. I would check a few things and figure out that I could not find out what was wrong when the unit was working so, I just went through the wiring diagram and saw that everything went to the control board and I gave that a shot. No more door ajar issues from May 2022 to present day July 2023.

Great video...what were your symptoms? I have a Whirlpool fridge (same manufacturer as KithchenAid) and the door ajar alarm randomly goes off and the light comes on. Has a mind of it's own and clears the problem when it wants...then the alarm again randomly goes off again and light comes on.

My symptoms were the same as yours. Random on-off, red, door ajar warning light for no reason. Doors were closed and the only error code I could call up was Right Door Open. That switch was a simple two line switch and replacement did nothing. Finally just checked the wiring and coughed up the money for a new board. All is well with no issues since May 2022.

@@brentgrove3483 Yes, that is correct. Since the error was with the board, the Door Ajar Code was misleading. The Westinghouse part number should be easier to find that the Kitchenaid part number. There are plenty of good sites to look at; genuinereplacementparts, repairclinic, homedepot, etc.

Yes, Thanks bud,your confirmation of what I thought after almost going your extra mile on troubleshooting. My chime said door was open. The lights in the refrigerator stays off,no ice being made,the water dispenser and temperature controls don’t work,the freezer works and the fan inside is blowing only freezer air throughout. She said so what’s the problem and how you gonna fix it? I heard that….. Said it’s probably the low circuit 24v board in the back the small one, should cost a few hundred to replace. She said ok you buy it if that’s what you…. Think the problem is….WOW! After watching this video ,I’m convince that we do know what the problem is and how to fix it. Thanks for sharing,we got to stick together and go for what you know 😮
