These guys are one those groups you can listen to the whole album repeatedly. They tell stories about what they live and what they see. That is the heart of the genre called "Texas Country". Yeah, we have alot of pride and sing alot about where we live but we do this for ourselves...this is what we actually listen to at home and at get-togethers. Ironically to some, Texas Country is really Western music more than Country. According to Don Cusic, author of "The Cowboy in Country Music: An Historical Survey" , "Country’s not loyal to a sound - it’s loyal to the market. Western music is loyal to a sound and an image and a lifestyle." Western music originated in the American West as the songs of ranchers and cowboys. Although originally heavily influenced by German immigrant Polkas and Mexican Rancheros, it incorporated many other styles and cultures into the mix as time went by. Texas Country is often called Red Dirt and we do have "Texas Red Dirt" but the style actually originated in Oklahoma. Outlaw Country is Texas born but also has its differences as well. Easy distinctions for fellow Texans, but can get confusing to those new to the scene. Here's a pretty darn good article that explains the differences so I don't have to keep pecking on this keyboard. bonfirethoughts.com/red-dirt-country-music-the-rapidly-growing-subgenre-477b9d3add0f BTW Texas Country is really nondiscriminatory...you don't have to be a native Texan or even have set foot in the state to be accepted into the fold. Ask Chris Knight, he'll tell you! :-)

I kept thinking their style seemed slightly familiar, and when you mentioned Creedence, I was nodding my head (and now I've gone and listened to five of my favorites from SO long ago). I was also nodding my head and had both thumbs up when you were talking about people being people, and not being offended by everything said by people who don't believe the same way you do. I agree with everything you said. Thanks for a great, thoughtful reaction. :-)

@@RockN2Country Thank YOU, Don...for your wonderful commentaries. :-) I listened to a brand new song today, that I think you would love. If you would react to it, it would be super, but even if you don't, I think it will touch you deeply. It's written by the lady who sings the song, McKenzie Zamber. She and her husband Reilly make up the team "The Hound + The Fox" (one of my patreons). It's a "thinker's" song, for sure. I suppose you wouldn't call it "country," per se, but..it definitely tells a story...or two...or three...or... (also, they chose the "instrument" purposely, so add that into your conjecture). ;-) "I Love You" was just released on KZbin on February 11, 2019, as a part of their brand new "Some Say Love's Enough" album (open.spotify.com/playlist/1Jdrbh35VL5RxnPXozOTxx), though McKenzie wrote it in 2017. They also (as usual) made their own video. They also run FifGen Films (www.fifgenfilms.com/about), though I think that other than their own videos, they have kind of put that on the back burner presently...not sure about that, though I've heard that from another couple of patrons. Anyway...I think you'll enjoy their music. :-)

New subscriber and enjoying your reactions. I love all kinds of music but my preference has always been ballads. Whether it's country, r and b or rock. One of my favorite country singer is old school and his ballads never gets old for me. Jim Reeves` voice is velvety, buttery. His most well known song is "He'll Have to Go". Would love to have your reaction to his song.

Don can you do a reaction to the Maverick's cover of "Harvest Moon". Not exactly country but the way Raul Malu, the lead singer performs it, could pass. Raul is one of the most underrated singer imho. He does sing some country songs but his rendition of Harvest Moon is just so nice and soothing.

Great reaction. As someone from the Deep South, that lived in Houston for 6 years, I can assure you Texas isn't Southern. Maybe East Texas has more of a Southern flavor. Texas is Texas. I think part of their independence and pride comes from the fact that they were a separate republic for 10 years. I was there during the 80's boom years; lots of transplants, especially Yankees. The most common refrain I heard was "We don't care how you did it up there, this is Texas." Salute to Texas. I had a damn good time.

I know it's on your list, just wanted to keep plugging Joshua Hedley's "Mr. Jukebox." It's true old-school country in a very polished style. Makes me think of Nashville, but old Nashville, or maybe Bakersfield, as opposed to the Red Dirt style that's currently the main rebellion against snap-track pop-country.

I was attempting thought today and I don’t think you have hit the great Graham Parsons. He also stated out rock as a member of the Byrds and then famously turned country and of coarse dying tragically young. “The Return of Grievous Angel” is my favorite by him.
