As nothing more than a kid from Arkansas who feels these kinds of songs in my soul, it gives me goosebumps to see someone from a different cultural background who can take something from what their hearing and be able to apply it to their own life. We probably have different socio-economic, political, and religious backgrounds, but when music is real, real people relate to it, no matter what.

When just comparing these specific songs, I think Ballad of a Southern Man easily wins this round. I do think there would have been some better Cody Jinks songs to compare to. That being said, Ballad of a Southern Man really touches fairly close to home from me. I am originally from the South and now living in the pacific northwest I often think most people don't understand my roots.

Wow, I feel ya, sister. I was a southern girl in Seattle for four years. I'd laugh when I'd go into stores and realize I was the ONLY woman wearing makeup, which was pretty much always. The lady in charge of the PTA had full sleeves of tats on both arms, something that would have given full on aneurysms to the ladies I grew up with, bless her heart! Finally got out of there, couldn't do anymore rain/cold (I moved out the last day of June, with my heater still running at night. Yeah, no). I'm back down south, people are friendly, now I'm the one without makeup half the time (divorced and not looking, lol), but it's sunny and warm. Again. I know it's beautiful country, but life is short, live where you love if you can possibly get away with it, and if you already are, then I'll send you some sunshine anyway, can't hurt! 😁

@gregstone1384
@gregstone1384 5 жыл бұрын
“Head Case” is brilliant. It defies normal song writing structure by not having a chorus, it deals with subjects that free-thinkers can relate to, and it opens musically with an acoustic guitar and a cello (a cello in a country song!). Then the closing of the song will give you goosebumps and raise the hairs on your arm. It’s a much better song for Lost In Vegas.

And talking about country folks shooting.. I live in the Ozarks. And to this day most folks here supplement their own protein. Especially now that even hamburger is 6 bucks a pound lol. I actually know people who have never bought their meat from a store. We feel a deeper connection to nature , and the animals that feed us, by having the respect to go through the entire process ourselves. If you eat meat.. I believe everybody who does should show their respect to nature by killing and cleaning their own protein at least once in their lives.

Interesting match-up. This is one of Whiskey Myers' two best songs by a mile, and I'm not even sure I'd put Must Be The Whiskey in my Cody Jinks top 5. I know users were polled for these choices, but I think Cast No Stones or David would be a stronger contest. Much like with RRB & CoJo...it's one band's magnum opus vs another's simply "good" song. It's also fascinating, though not really surprising given this channel also has a strong heavy metal element, that the two winning groups are a LOT closer to the southern rock side of red dirt than the country side (assuming WM wins).

To answer y’all’s question about the song simple man. ballad of a southern man is texas red dirt country. the song simple man as y’all know is by lynyrd skynyrd which is a band from my hometown jacksonville, florida. so back to your question, if someone from texas didn’t know the words to simple man would they be an imposter? no because the song simple man isn’t necessarily a texas thing, it’s a southern thing. And of course not everyone who lives in the south is gonna know the lyrics to simple man because not everyone here is what i guess you could call “traditionally southern”, the south is made up of many different cultural groups. now if they were claiming to be southern and couldn’t sing simple man, then yes, they’re an imposter to me lol. But there you go

Love the new format and I watch you guys for the country music reactions. It's cool to see how other people react to the songs we all know and love. If you do these bracket style reviews again. I think you should pick the artists and let people vote on the song. No more "you picked the wrong song by so and so".

When y’all do turnpike troubadours y’all HAVEEEE to do “the house fire” if you really listen to the lyrics I think it’s a good story and a catchy tune. Also loved the video by the way!! (My first gun wasn’t a rifle but it was a 9mm) lol

I have a head to head suggestion for you: Chris Knight "Down the River" v. Charlie Robison "Loving County". They are both story songs and a little too long for the radio. I think you will like both of them. These are two artist that you may never have heard of but are well respected in Texas.

The first time I ever heard Whiskey Myers they opened for Randy Rogers at Hurricane Harry's in College Station, TX. Their whole set had a very down to earth raw sound that just resonated through the place, it was amazing. I love this new format, and I like that you guys are starting to pick up on the Texas country sound vs the bubble gum/bro country stuff coming out of Nashville. I'm excited for you guys to venture further down this rabbit hole. Also my obligatory, Aaron Watson - Shut up and Dance, comment.

I don’t know if y’all caught it, but the last chorus changed from “There’s blood on the table cause we worked for what we have” to “There’s a Bible on the table cause He bled for what he have” it’s one of my favorite parts

Must be the whiskey is definitely his most commercial song. Hippies and cowboys, headcase, and lifers would have done Cody Jinks justice

Saw the guy who wrote ‘Must be the Whiskey’ at a show in Nashville with Ian Noe and Colter Wall. Hell of a show and a cool guy. His name is Josh Morningstar.

Oh this song is great because it really is about the Hearth and Home. You know you love it when grandma is in the kitchen cooking your favorite meal, and you hear the voices of all your loved ones as you stubbornly try to do something else. Sitting on the front-porch. You know that feeling of Home. It is hard to come by these days with these modern families, which is "you won't understand". I remember how I used to rebel against it, and do my own thing in the middle of it, but I was there in the middle of it regardless. Grandma's kisses and all. Oh god how I miss it, now that it is gone. I think when I die I will probably end up in that place, sitting on the grand table with all my ancestors and have a grand old feast.

I've been a sub for a few years now, and I love what you guys do to no end. There are still genres that you haven't touched at all, and I would love to see that expansion. I'm referring to alternative, indie, etc. I know you guys would really like Bon Iver, Hozier, the Black Keys, and many others. Much love from Wisconsin! #freethinkers
