Chilfiltered vs unchilfiltered! Rex and Daniel, you guys might not see this as the video is already over a week old but maybe people will upvote enough.... As I was watching Aqvavitae/Roy’s ABCD whisky presentation, he mentioned it’s very hard to know whether chilfiltering makes any difference because “where are you going to find the exact same whisky in both chilfiltered and unchilfiltered version?” And I IMMEDIATELY thought about you guys. I know you probably don’t have the purpose-made equipment but you sure could recreate the conditions! This is one experiment I know I would love to see done, and I think many others would too. Old lady funk smells like the closet in the middle bedroom in my grandmother’s house, where she would hang clothes that she had worn once or twice. She didn’t think they were dirty enough to wash yet (Narrator’s voiceover: They were, in fact, dirty enough to wash.), but she wouldn’t put them in the master closet with the clean clothes. Over the decades, that closet developed a strong, distinct, old lady funk.

I definitely posted this idea last year, but it seems super relevant to this video. I think it would be super cool to choose an Eleanor bottling (something you have a few casks of) and prepare a couple bottles at a range of proofs to keep at the bar (not for distribution). Then when someone walks into the distillery, they can try Eleanor at a few different proofs. (And a noob can start at 80.) THEN, if they buy a bottle, if they had a favorite proof, you can tell them what ratio of whiskey to water to use to get there!

I grew up drinking malt liquor 40 oz beer and Royal Reserve or Canadian Classic gut rot rye (sorry, I know some Americans consider those to be cool Canadian whisky’s. For us they’re for hoodlums and hobos) Now I’m old, and I don’t get drunk and roam the streets looking for a fight anymore, but I somehow developed a love for whisky along the way. Watching these videos is great, helps educate me to make guided decisions when buying a nicer bottle. Thanks fellas.

Last night a friend of mine who doesn't drink whiskey offered to introduce me to a Nikka Bar (yes, a bar that basically only serves Nikka Whiskies). She had gone out of her way to find me a bar that I would enjoy. She didn't have to; I don't think she realized at her favorite bar (a beer bar that specializes in German beer) had a small scotch collection and the eigentümer knew me on sight (not many non-Japanese visit this place). Either way, the group decides to go to the Nikka Bar. I pass around a neat glass of a Nikka at a higher proof, I think around 50%; needless to say they didn't like it. I ask the bartender for a little bit of water and pass the glass around again. With just a few drops everyone in the group suddenly loved it, their whole experience changed just from a less than a 1/4 teaspoon of water.

How about offering a set of glasses of water that when mixed with a static amount of whiskey gives you a calculation of x proof to y proof. Then turn it into a business card game where you have to fill out a tasting note cheat sheet and the people who get it closest to the som get ... something. It can also be used to figure out by volume what people like as their favorite %.

Before watching the video. I whiskeys like glenfiddich 12 for instance. Not the most expensive, and not my favorite. But I love it. The fun thing is, it taste better than A LOT of more expensive whiskeys in the 46% range. And glenfiddich 12 is... 40% if I'm not mistaken. Usually not something I buy a bottle of anymore, but something I order straight if I'm out drinking. Now... After the weekend is over, I'm going out to buy a bottle, because I just want it around for the occasional glass.

I had that cask strength newbie situation this morning. A guy was buying a set if makers mark cask strength varieties for his son turning 21 and I was warning him hard to take It easy and add water or ice or these would likely be way too hot and blow him out of whisky. It's an awesome gift but not beginner friendly at all.

I don't even know ABV of what I'm drinking and that actually does a pretty good trick. Makes me just focus on the nose and taste. But to be honest I had a quite a few shots at Ron Carlos (75.5%) paired with snow back in my rock star dayzz, so I doubt smooth whiskey with high ABV can surprise me :D

I find that some high proof whiskeys are a little numbing, but are much more approachable after a couple drinks of something else. Even swill. I had a 69% rum recently and it was great as is.

As a noob, I like to try different things and learn about the whiskeys. Perhaps offering something like what you did with different strengths of the same whiskey and explanations of that would help noobs, like myself, to better understand what they are drinking, what they should looking for and teach them about the art and craft that goes into whiskey. Would also proverbially sell pretty well too. I know a lot of people who love flights.

What if you did this at your bar with your cask strength? Have proofed down samples, and call it the Cask Explorer as the recommended drink for first time at the bar? You get 1/4 pour starting at the lowest proof and working your way up until you find where you want to drink, and you can finish the pour at whatever level you liked best.

I tended to proof down the early eleanors. Seemed to make it better for me. But the more recent releases imo were better at higher proofs
