Today we taste and review The Singleton 12 Years Scotch.
If you want to toast the channel:
1) Upload your video toast to KZbin.
2) Mark it as "unlisted" if you don't want the video to appear in public search results.
3) Put a link to the video in our comments with the hashtag "#toast".
Check out the Instagram account @whiskey_marketing_school
** Can I donate a whisk(e)y for you to review in The Whisk(e)y Vault?
Of course! If you’re interested in making a tax-deductible donation towards our whiskey selection, head on over to:
11:27 - boof
austinwhiskyvault.com/whisky-d...
** What's with the necklaces?
Rex is a whiskey mooch. His necklace is a manifestation of pure glory - forged from the irradiated bones of eagles and wolves. Also a tube sock.
See the origin story here: goo.gl/JMc2Hr
Daniel is a whiskey sommelier. His necklace is a token of his sommelier level, and he trains whiskey sommeliers at The Whisk(e)y Marketing School in Austin Texas.
**A Whisk(e)y school?
Yup. Here are a few things we believe.
** You don’t have to be a snob to appreciate and love great whiskey.
Whisky and Whiskey (it depends on where it’s from) have been an important part of cultures around the world from time immemorial. Whiskey is a part of the very fabric of Western society, and in most places, is as common and accessible as beer.
Like Jazz and wine, snobs have predictably hijacked whiskey appreciation, spoiling our natural, common connection with it and creating a false dichotomy of “good whiskey” and “bad whiskey.”
It’s time to break through the emotional bias with facts and science. That’s what this school is about.
** The only valid definition of “good” whiskey is “whiskey you like to drink.”
Learning how to share your love of whiskey in a way that connects people to the history and the story has more to do with public speaking and storytelling than it does with facts and tests.
The best way to learn about whiskey and share that love is to drink whiskey and talk about it with friends. Study the history, find the stories, and discover the culture and the methods that have been developed over hundreds of years. That’s what you’ll do when you attend The Whisk(e)y Marketing School.
** You don’t need a marketing degree to learn how to share your love of whiskey with the world.
There's an old saying, "In business, it's not what you know... It's who you know."
Regardless the industry you're in, most people are clumsy and ineffective when it comes to "networking" because they ignore a very important rule - Relationship First, Business Second.
There's a tremendous amount of curiosity about Whisk(e)y today. It's a great excuse for you to gather a group of people who want to have fun and learn something new. The Whisk(e)y School teaches you how to tap into that curiosity, and share your love of whisk(e)y in an unpretentious way. You're demonstrating knowledge, expertise, and an engaging personality - things valued by every gatekeeper, in every industry.
Or would you rather hand out business cards and cross your fingers?

Ah! Sweet release! Actually, the only reason I wanted you to feature Singleton on the channel was that it was one of the first whiskies I tried and could afford, and wanted to hear some tasting notes from someone with a more refined palate so I would know what to look for. Revisiting the Dufftown 12 a couple of months ago I didn't find any more than you guys did, but thought hey, maybe there was some magical thing I wasn't seeing. My massive chub for the singleton is close to non-existent sadly, as I've quickly migrated to the smokier side of whisky, (my favourite being Lagavulin) and honestly, I had kind of forgotten about those comments I made, which, come to think of it were kind of excessive, quantity wise. Sorry about that! Cheers!

Haven't tried the 18 yet, but I've had some non-Islay I loved, like the Highland Park 12 or Oban 14. Still, I'd have to agree with you.

My girlfriends dad introduced me to Singleton alongside Highland Park and I still have a soft spot for them. Having tried more expensive and exclusive Whisky, I still keep at least one bottle each at home, just because it is so nice to keep introducing people to Single Malt Whisky or heck, even Whisky in general. And nobody ever complained about the Singleton Dufftown 12yo. That's what I like about it, it's just such a good entry point to the Whisky-world! Much love from Germany :)

Hey gents! I'm a big whiskey fan who's now come across your channel and love it too! One recommendation I have to make is your pronunciation of "Dufftown". At 2:22, you pronounce it "Duff-town", which is absolutely how my wife and I pronounced it when we stayed there during a Scotch-tasting tour a few years back. I was quickly corrected by the locals and informed that it's actually pronounced "Duff-ton", Not to be nit-picky, but thought you might like to know. Cheers, fellas!

You can achieve what you’re looking for using a bottle wrap. It would change the color of a clear bottle to any color that you wish. it is relatively inexpensive and can protect your bottles from UV rays. It also could add texture similar to what you see with Bullet Bourbon bottles, but in the cooler way. Just a thought.

Hey guys! Really interested in getting your thoughts on the Aultmore range from Dewars. Halfway through a bottle of their 12 year old and fallen in love with the stuff. Ok not the most challenging dram but a wonderfully crafted Speyside, worthy of scrutiny. Great channel by the way, I find myself dropping by whenever I have a spare half hour. So after eating trail mix I have a bizarre question. When I ate a large amount of one specific nut or fruit I noticed some flavors disappear within the whiskey I was drinking. Does that therefore mean it could be a part of the whiskey's flavor profile? Or is it that regardless of profile certain foods are going to change your palette? Because in certain bourbons I definitely get a dried banana or apricot note.

Daniel and Rex, Love you guys and the channel! Knowing that you are both, dare I say, disciples of Ralfy and have loads of great whisky wisdom and recommendations to share with us all, your tastes in whisky are pretty damn reliable. I do admit that I probably liked this bottle of Scotch more than either of you did. HOWEVER, I don't think you were exposed to the REAL merit of this whisky, which is how well it pairs with some damn fine BBQ. Since you're at the epicenter of BBQ (Texas: Let the meat speak for itself), I think you both would actually appreciate Singleton 12 more if you poured yourselves a dram while tucking into some brisket, ribs, pulled pork, baked beans, etc. It's malty, honey and vanilla finish pairs quite succinctly with the smoke and sweet spice of Texan BBQ. On that same note, I would not only love it if you both tried Singleton 12 again with some BBQ on your own time, but if you would consider doing a whisky and food pairing video once a month, somewhat a kin to your Rare Whisky Friday videos. This could also be a great plug for you guys recommending some of your favorite local restaurants from Austin and the surrounding area. Thanks for taking the time to read all of this!

Daniel, can you comment on the effects different storage materials have on whiskey? I'm trying to find a lightweight container that I can store whiskey in for backpacking, but I'm worried that putting alcohol in a plastic container will change the taste/give me cancer.
@kevink931
@kevink931 6 жыл бұрын
I've read that the nalgene flasks are pretty neutral, but I haven't had a chance to test the one I bought recently yet. I don't do backpacking, but I camp off a motorcycle, so the storage/space requirements are similar. I have some glass 5 oz bottles that I use to give friends samples, and I've contemplated using a couple or 3 of those for a trip, but I can't think of a super safe way to pack them and be absolutely sure they won't get broken in the bag without taking up a huge amount of space.

Oh but a steel flask definitely does interact with the whiskey. Go glass lined or pewter (white metal) and your good to go.
@ericschwab409
@ericschwab409 6 жыл бұрын
Stainless steel reacts less with the alcohol than the tin alloy known as pewter. Glass is the best material to store alcohol, and plastic is the worst. I’ve always used a stainless steel flask to transport whiskies while camping and backpacking. I always empty the flask when I get back home and rinse and dry the flask out. I will not use polycarbonate anymore, even for water. The bisphenol hazard is too great even in BPA-free plastics. BPA-free plastics still contain bisphenol (bisphenol-F, etc) and that bisphenol is still leachable and a hazard. BPA-free is still a potential risk.

Daniel, When Scottish/Irish distilleries buy used American oak barrels from the US, do they specify toast and char for the barrel, what distillery it comes from, or anything else in regards to the barrel specifications? I think that if big distilleries, such as Midleton, didn't have some sort of control or specifications in line in regards to the barrels they are buying that it would be EXTREMELY hard to get the exact flavor profile of their products. Blending seems like a huge headache of a task.
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 жыл бұрын
They do! In fact, they get so much into the control of it, that several Scottish distilleries actually own lumber companies, make the barrels themselves in the US, and lease them to bourbon distilleries before they bring them to Scotland.

Hey Daniel. The other day I was with my friends drinking whisky and we had a discussion about scotch. Is it possible for a whisky to be called Scotch even if it was not made in Scotland? because I have seen some Indian whiskys print scotch on the labels. I did do some research which said that scotch is a whisky made using Scottish technique. Not necessarily distilled or made in Scotland. I may be wrong. So I would like you to enlighten me.
@WhiskeyVault
@WhiskeyVault 6 жыл бұрын
No it's not! And the SWA (Scottish Whisky Association). The SWA and Diageo have aggressively gone to war trying to shut down Indian malts from saying "scotch" or even having "scotch sounding distillery names". It's an ongoing thing.

This sounds like it might be similar to the now discontinued Scapa 16yo. Which I loved, but was a pain to get get since it wasn't distributed to the state I live in (ID). The closest thing I've found so far is Nikka Taketsuru Pure Malt, which I love even more than the Scapa, but also isn't distributed here, . . . . hmmmmm, maybe I should just @#$%^&! move! . . .

Not the most informative reviews but every time I watch another whiskey review I get bored after 30 seconds and stop watching. You guys are the Top Gear (Grand Tour) of whisky reviews!

I URGE you to try the Benromach 15. it is unique and wonderful. really unique! I would send you a bottle if I could - but until I can afford it, please try and get it. You will not be sorry. I live on the other side of the world and I cannot get it here. I would need to travel to Scotland again. not that I mind... :) I will do - but until that time it would be LOVELY to reminisce watching you two Wonders having a dram. I had just discovered your channel and these days my favourite thing to do is sit in front of the computer screen, knitting, and watch your videos and pretend I can taste it with you. Slàinte!

i disagree with your grading ! its up there with lots of brand name single malt specially with the 12 years old and better than big names in this category , and its cheaper by at least by 30% by me it scores high .....

So mesquite barrel finish for the sick and demented whisk(e)y you are making, or maybe use some old Islay scotch barrel finish ... also dad jokes are best jokes, one day the Master of Moochiness will learn that. #dadjokesforlife #cigarlighter

i had a bottle of this and tried it and pushed it to the back of my bar where it stayed for months.I repeated the process a few times and the only way i finished this bottle was to mix a five to one ratio of Laphroaig quarter cask to it .Then it was at least drinkable. BTW I really enjoy your reviews

I’m going to keep this short (like Daniel) and post my obligatory #Chadweek comment. Ps. Today’s episode...meh.. I’ve seen you guys do better. Still funny I’m just disappointed we only got one whisky, also dad joke and no penalty whiskey from the shelf. What’s going on Rex what kind of mooch are you?
