Yammy is for the intelligent, patient player. Get close enough to do crazy amounts of damage but not so close you get swarmed and focused down. She IS the ultimate bb.

I have the Yamato, and I have the same play experience you do with it Whiskey. I'm getting better with it, as I'm leaning how to play it. I think the main problem is some KZbinrs, who are highly skilled at this game, make it seem like the Yamato is an easy noob friendly ship to play, which it isn't. The Yamato requires a lot of skill and practice to play well, as you should expect from a tier ten ship. I'm not complaining about it, and I actually like the ship quite a bit, especially when I get the rare chance to brawl with it. That said my favorite BB now is the Iowa. Now that they lowered the citadel, I'm really falling in love with my Iowa, as it's quite a bit tankier now, but still maintains it's outstanding speed, maneuverability, main gun accuracy, quick turret protection, and AA protection. Once all the T8 - T10 American CVs get AP dive bombers, I don't want to be in a BB with thin deck armor (Germans), or a BB with sub par AA protection (IJN). When I see a squadron of enemy AP bombers heading towards me, I'll definitely feel safest in the Iowa.

The hybrid version of Ise is almost guaranteed to be a premium if she's added. Also Nagato and Amagi are tiered too high in your list; Nagato in no way is a competitor to Bismarck and North Carolina.

Seraphil1 Good Point but with British BB's being added and if thing stay the same at tier 8 there is going to be King George the 5th as of now and it doesn't mean anything about nagato and amagi being bumped up a rank, it depends on the skill of the player in control of the ship. Amagi is tier 8 so what the real difference between tier 8 and 9 it will still face tier 10s, but more often though, whats the difference as seeing how the Izumo is a trash and the amagi is somewhat good. Going back to Ise and Fuso deal, Fuso would be a better ship as you would get more guns on target before ise would ever with the amount of armor on the ships. I kinka look at these ships as plastic cannons, not under armored like glass cannons but can get roughed up a bit. (EDIT) Point being made? Nagato already has to face tier 8's and 9's it would be just be more common.

Yamato had around 640m turning radius (like you said) and around 17s ruder shift time so It was more maneuverable in real life. Also Iowa had around 800m turning radius.

Iowa's Tactical Diameter was 710m at about 30 knots. The South Dakota's were basically the same but at a lower speed. Both are more maneuverable in real life than in game. It'd be nice to have that back but I doubt that'll happen! :(

In real life, French tanks have 12 shells in the autoloader but in WOT, they only have 6 of them, so by comparison, I guess we should be happy WG did not nerf more.

Just imagine what it took for them to build this battleship in secrecy. For a starter, they financed the building by disguising the money as "resource to build 3 kagerou class destroyer and 2 Yuugumo class Destroyer", erecting large canvas at the dock, and building it in full secrecy to the point that the US Secret service never actually managed to report the ship's actual size (as the only assume it was bigger, but it was double the size they were expecting)

its armor was thick but of poor quality, having a effective thickness equivalent to the KGVs belt - british armour was better in terms of quality - her guns were good but only equal in penetrating power to the Iowa albeit more effective once they penetrated as they had a bigger bursting charge. and her AA battery was poor, her FCS was also less effective than the Iowa or KGVs. she had good guns and was massive but was not the most advanced ship and was in fact a flawed design

I've actually tried the secondary spec on this ship and could never get it to work consistently. Like the German BB's, it requires a team that is willing to push with you and that is exceedingly difficult to find in randoms. :(

Excellent review. Quite helpful in elaborating what is good/bad about this ship. I think that helps me make my decision on what to do with the IJN Battleships after Nagato/Amagi at least for now. Absolutely, which is why I dislike the way the earlier IJN BB's teach you to play (mid to long range sniper). It's the wrong mentality for Izumo and Yamato, which are better mid range ships!

The thing is, unlike the planned 18"/45 Mk II guns of the G3/N3s of the Royal Navy and the American 18"/48 Mark I and 18"/47 Mark A guns, the Yamatos were not rifled, not to mention had anti-aircraft shells. Mysashu fired only once when she fired her incendiary shrapnel (Sankaidan) AA shells during the Battle of Sibuyan Sea, one of which exploded in the barrel, disabling the gun. Even if that didn’t happen, who’s the idiot who thought giving guns with a rate of fire of 1.5-2 rounds/minute the ability to fire AA shells? I mean sure, it’s something but at the expense of rifling? It’s better to opt for the faster moving guns with a significantly faster rate of fire than the sluggish guns that can only turn at 2°/second and only fire every 30-40-seconds. Plus Yamato’s AA suite historically was crap. Sure she had 162 of the 25 mm Type 96s, but they were one of the worst AA guns of the war, but out of the IJN’s AA naval arsenal of weapons, Japanese military personnel stated they were the most reliable Japanese anti-aircraft weapon, only second in effectiveness to the 100 mm Type 98. Didn’t help that the crew of Yamato during Ten-Gō were inexperienced and suffered many technical difficulties with the guns during the operation.

It's debatable weather it was the ultimate battleship or not. It would appear to be the strongest in terms of armor and armament tho it was lacking in fire control and AA. I have seen a lot of debates on how it would fare against Iowa class battleships, obviously it's impossible to know for sure. That being said, I do suspect that it did out-class other nation's battleships such as KGV, Bismarck, etc.

It was the ultimate battleship, Bismarck was tough but lacked firepower, KGV had only 14inch guns, and the Iowas were not designed with strength as a priority, Yamatos were intended to anihilate every other ship on the planet in a fight.

It of course also relies fully on speculation since we won't be building them over again to old specs to test! My point was to say if they weren't #1 they were damn close.

Stewart Maclean pretty much. But Iowa's firepower was close to Yamato's considering comparable penetration thanks to super heavy shells. Yamato had much thicker armor tho. Iowa/SD was designed to have a zone of immunity for a different shell and wasn't changed when the shell they used was upgraded.

If I remember correctly, torpedo bulge of Yamato was not excellent but only because lack of resources and time. At least Yamato hote... sorry... Yamato didn't sunk too easily despite her deficient torpedo protection. I like her in game but for some odd reasons my highest damage record is still on my Amagi. Yamato has the highest average damage of course.

There was a huge flaw in her torpedo bulge where her upper armored belt met the lower armored belt. This junction burst after just one torpedo hit on both Yamato and Musashi and probably on Shinano too. Her crews did a good job of sealing off water tight bulkheads but it didn't stop the flooding from taking out propulsion. Basically the DC locked up the room that was flooding and then counter flooded as necessary to keep the ship upright. It was that methodology that caused Kirishima to capsize and probably contributed to the capsizing of Yamato and Musashi too.

Yes, that was the error in her torpedo bulge. But all Yamato class ships were incomplete (Shinano as well). Japan had insufficent resourses and time for implement these ships. So torpedo defense performed worse than designed. Perhaps Wargaming used the plans of Yamato for these stats, but it can be some kind of sarcasm as well.

It's been done before to bring ships back to service but sounds like an expensive undertaking for a museum ship. I'm not sure what nearly 3/4 century of being submerged would do to a hull once the ship was recovered. Would it stay together once it was brought back up? And yes, its a grave for a lot of people too.

Sunken warships are the property of their respective countries and Japan does not feel the same way the US does about raising warships. If anything recovery of the bodies on board would be the primary reason for it. There is a rather long discussion about this over on the WoWs forum on the post that brought up Raising Musashi.

Didn't Musashi broke in 2 due to the explosion. I'm not sure. Maybe that was the reason they dropped the idea of bringing her back up. Another thing, I think there would be more resistance from the Americans than the Japanese, about raising a Yamato class battleship. You know how much flak the Yamato 2 got from Americans just becoz of its name and it isn't event a warship, just an experimental ship for magenetic induction engine.

Honestly, it has to do with the main guns and the effects of firing them. Any light AA put on the deck of the ship would be damaged easily by the main battery, that's why most of the AA guns are mounted in shields. The USN got away with it because the USN operated differently in a tactical situation... outside of a few select incidents, US battleships were almost always covered by air cover from carriers and did NOT see much combat at close engagement ranges with AA also present. They still cleared the decks during main battery firing to prevent killing crew though.

Kii was not a Yamato-class, it was a different battleship project entirely. The 4th Yamato had numbers only for a name. The Ship no. 797 was a modified Yamato design as part of the Maru-Go project.

As you said, the Yamato class BB are artificially very clumsy, thanks to WG. Its only saving grace are the guns, both size and accuracy. But the 1.8 sigma of the Musashi means that you need to be much closer to hit anything and this is when the focus fire against you comes in.

The Mighty Yamato!...was a great ship, sure, but her following have imho made the devs balance her a bit strange...The ability to overmatch the bow of every ship in the game and also the best accuracy of any BB (at least) in the game on the same ship...Why? What is this piedestal that she's been put on top of? Seems silly and excessive to me. I mean...The Iowa should if anything have the most accurate BB guns probably due to her fire control systems and also didn't the Japanese opt for higher calibers like the 460mm guns on Yamato to compensate for poor penetration on their shells? So in reality the Yamato probably doesn't penetrate that much better, if better at all, than an Iowa? Anyway, I consider the Iowa-class to be the mightiest BB class at least. The Yamato is impressive too ofc don't ger me wrong, but I value real numbers more than fairy tales and according to them I'd say that if they face each other the Iowa would win.

For me it seems the USA BBs have way better accuracy than the Japanese BBs so far. I have the Yamato, and only up to NC on USA line. But I prefer the guns on the USA BBs over Japanese anytime. They have vastly superior dispersion when properly aimed. and the grouping is great on the USA BBs which makes it easy to deal high damage if the opponent makes a mistake, or if DDs show up :) With the Japanese BBs that is not possible, and you need to rely a bit more on RNG :(

Thanks, that was an interesting history. To be honest, Despite being powerfull and resiliant, i prefer playing montana and have been more sucessfull with Montana. I guess Yamato playstyle doesn't agree with me. I look forward to unlock kurfurst, i am currently at the friedrich with is one of my favourite german Battleship.

I'm a huge fan of the Montana, it's not the most powerful battleship but it fits my play style well. I loved the FDG but the GK is even better. It's a powerful and tough ship but I'm not sure it fits my play style as well as tier 8-10 USN battleships do.

Whiskey's Gaming Lounge My favourite high tier battleship i would say is North Carolina followed by Iowa, Amagi and Montana. I am not a huge fan of bismarck because to me, she is too specialised for close engagement and suffer immensely from high tier meta and better played in divisions for coordinated hard pushes. i however as a solo player dont suffer as much in fdr possibly because the 406 guns seem more efficient at mid range than the 380

I was just in a ranked battle and I'm here to try to make myself suck less. I was battling a Yamato and I was in a Yamato. I was nose on, my adversary was almost broadside to me. I got a couple of 10k+ hits on him, but i could not get the citadel. The rest of the shots wre like 2K, 4K and a few 7k's etc, but no 20-30k hits that I would have normally expected. Anyway, he was getting multiple cits on me. WTF? Where on earth is he aiming to get citadels on me, even though I am nose on. WTF is going on there. Any help apprecited. I may be a Dumas, but i can not understand how he was doing this. you know what? Check my acount in a few hours and I will have posted a video of the battle.

You know, it's funny when I hear Japanese people say it two different ways in the same sentence... FWIW, on the ships that have KanColle characters, I tend to go listen to their voice actresses say their names (for Japanese ships, I guess I should clarify :P) and in Yamato's intro I hear it with emphasis in both the first and second syllable on the first and second time she says her name. Gotta love nuance! Good thing Japanese is about 1000 times less nuanced than German! :D

It feels like they never take their time to at least search up how to properly pronounce the foreign name they are to pronounce. Then in return everyone hear them say the wrong pronunciation, and so everyone says it incorrectly. I passively blame VA for that xD
