Is FLAVORED Whiskey Actually Bad? (or are we just too afraid to admit the deliciousness...)

All MB's know that RULE #1 in the Whiskey Tribe is - The BEST whisk(e)y is the whisk(e)y you like to drink - the way you like to drink it. But FLAVORED WHISKEY never seems to get any love in whisky circles. Is that reputation deserved? Or have we been missing out on something tasty because we're too worried about what our fancy friends might think?

10:45 Honey can have notes. Bees were stealing ingredients from a licorice factory in my hometown, and their honey tasted like licorice. You might find that the bees responsible for the Yukon Jack are also responsible for pollinating a citrus orchard.

Get this.... I worked for almost 10 years for a craft brewery. The master brewer always buys local honey at our Farmers' Market because it helps build his immunity to local pollens and their allergens. That makes perfect sense.

How to Drink has a awesome single serve eggnog recipe. 2 oz bourbon, .5 oz simple syrup, .5 luxardo maraschino, and a whole raw egg. Dry shake to emulsify then shake with ice. Pour in glass, and mix in 3 oz whole milk. Top with nutmeg. I love replacing the spirit with a great jamacian rum and ditching maraschino for a coconut rum.

@@MrWhangdoodles You’ll hear anywhere from a 1:1 to 4:1 scotch/Drambuie ratio, depending on the source. I generally do a 3:1 ratio for any whiskey-liqueur duo, but I like my drinks on the medium-dry side.
@tsrindahl
@tsrindahl 3 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I don’t think anyone drinks it neat. It’s a liqueur. Drambuie is no more a flavored whiskey than Grand Marnier is a flavored Cognac. I love Rusty Nails almost as much as an Old Fashioned. I make them 2oz blended scotch like Chevas Regal 3/4 to 1 oz Drambuie stir on the rocks and float 1/2 oz Ardbeg 10 or Uigeadail on top. Then an optional second float or Angostura Bitters. Heavenly!
@oivind22
@oivind22 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's what I keep a bottle of Drambuie for. I use a ratio of 3:1 or 4:1, whisky to Drambuie. I have only tried it with Johnnie Walker Black, but my idea was to use it for whiskies I don't finish because they're too boring (I'll try with Laphroaig sometime, though). Throw in some Drambuie and ice, and you have a nice dessert. Excellent after a heavy meal.

If you're ever looking to do a second episode here are some more Canadian suggestions: Crown Royal Peach (literally tastes like peach rings) Wolfhead Coffee (more of a liquer) Spicebox chocolate (company claims the roots of this lie in prohibition when rye would be put in used cocoa barrels to make it back towards your side of the border)

I know I am a year and a half late to the party here... But, I am a Mint Julep fan. I like them. I have actually ordered them at a couple of bars, although nearly none of them do it justice. The Mint Julep is responsible for the invention of the drinking straw. It was the favorite drink of the guy who invented them because you aren't supposed to touch the glass. Don't want to water the drink down with your body heat, and he didn't like the hay flavor that was added with the straw straws of the time. That, and they got mushy. So, he got with his drinking buddy, and the two of them (one worked at a paper mill, the other a pencil factory) wrapped paper around a pencil, waxed it and called it a day. He made a few dozen to give to his bartender and they were a big enough hit a new product was born. Thank you, Mint Julep.

I would be beyond thrilled to see you guys try some of the flavored spirits from City Gate in St. Augustine FL. Their whole shtick is making flavored spirits (whiskey included) that are light on the sweetness and focus on natural extracts and flavors. Totally changed my opinion on what flavored spirits can be. When I walked into their business and they said "we specialize in flavored spirits" I was like :( and by the time I left after sampling everything I was like :D

My father kept a bottle of Rock and Rye in the pantry when I was a kid. When I was sick he would pour a little bit in a glass and have me drink it before I went to bed. Always woke up the next day feeling better after having a great nights sleep. Also try a Snakebite, it's a shot of Yukon Jack with some Roses lime juice floated on top.

Thanks for taking one for the team. A true purist May hate anything flavored, but if you know what you’re getting into I think they can be pretty great. Evan Williams honey with some ginger ale is awesome on a hot day. KZbin seemed to give Knob Creek Smoked Maple so much, but for something sweet with a kick, I really enjoyed it.

I been wondering for some time now. I have and had some whiskey bottles that’s I have never opened. I’m a control environment where I keep my whiskey collection and noticed that a few bottles have condensation inside the bottles. Is this bad? I have also noticed at some liquor stores. I was wondering if you guys can make an episode detailing on why it happens and does it affect the whiskey inside the bottle regardless if it has never been opened. I and I’m sure everyone else would love to hear your take on this. FYI… I’m a been a big fan of yours for the past 4 years. Thank you in advance and keep up the great work in educating people like me.

To this day just the smell of SC has me hangin over the toilet . Nowadays its bourbon or scotch , no weird flavors !! Really enjoy the channel 👍👍

I bought a bottle of that Knob Creek Smoked Maple, not knowing anything about it, and LOVED it. The bottle didn't last long. It really is one hell of a dessert drink. Strangely, Woodford Reserve Double Oaked matches the flavor profile quite closely. Only it's less sweet and even better.

I thought I was like one of the only ones that wasn’t a huge fan of fireball. And I love cinnamon. Also with the Screwball...try adding some to an American stout. The chocolate flavor and peanut butter obviously works. And the sweetness of Screwball is cut a bit by the bitter stout

ive seen a couple schools of thought on the mint julep - some say its best with you brush the mint around the tin prior to adding whiskey/sugar/ice, and some say all you need is the aromatics from the mint bouquet garnish. there are those who muddle mint in the bottom, but that seems to be a biiiig nono with bartenders

All right, I'm only 4 1/2 minutes or so into the video and I must take some exception to the mint julep critique. My wife and I just visited Louisville in early summer and discovered is a distinct, stark difference between the julep syrup designed to make fast cocktails versus the dedicated bartenders that freshly make a fine mint julep. In addition, how dare you with blaspheming egg nog, sirs! Even if I prefer my nog with tequila. Love the content, as always, and especially loving the atmospheric ambiance.

Rock and Rye is probably my favorite flavored whiskey, because it is just like you said. A "full strength" mixed drink. Crown Peach is pretty good too, but extremely sweet. I remember when JD Tennessee Honey came out that is was very easy to do shots of, but haven't had it since. Haha

Rock & Rye is, since Colonial times, and still is, at least here in Appalachia, a cold/fever cure, with a twist of lemon. Served hot. I'm surprised y'all Texas boys didn't know that. Great channel.
