The sweetness is why I don't muddle any fruit and double down on the bitters. I also go for an orange twist for a little extra citrus without that sweetness. Also, swap sugar for simple syrup for a more consistent drink, sometimes I'll go for maple syrup. WT 101 is also my go to old fashioned bourbon.

This was my Covid project, finding the best best whiskey (and recipe) for a Old Fashioned. And surprising (or not), my favorite was also Wild Turkey 101. It's got enough proof to handle the sweetness and the other notes just work with the orange and bitters flavoring, more than most other whiskeys. I never tried Four Roses, so I'll give that a go.

I love that an Old Fashioned has "controversial" options. It allows you to make it your own way. My favourite bartender always made it by placing a napkin over a glass with a sugar cube on top, then soaking the cube with bitters. The napkin would absorb the excess bitters. Muddle. Add a bunch of normal ice cubes and 30ml (1oz) whiskey. Stir a heap so some ice melts. Add 15ml (.5oz) whiskey. Stir a little. Add a flamed orange peel after rubbing it around the rim. I can't remember if he also garnished with a cherry. My personal style is maple syrup, bitters, 45ml. (1.5oz) whiskey, large ice cube, orange peel. While I prefer scotch when drinking neat, an old fashioned has to be bourbon/rye. Blanton's, Marker's 46, Woodford. I also like twists on it, like a rum old fashioned, or even a "gin refashioned" with lemon bitters.
@Jakfic
@Jakfic 3 жыл бұрын
+1 for maple syrup for a twist or just rich demerara syrup. I don't like crunchy Old fashioned and it's way easier to make it. Ango, bourbon, orange peel - that's it. Cherry for me is an abomination (not so old fashioned - overkill). 10ml of rich syrup (8-10) 60ml of bourbon 4 dashes of ango (might use orange&regular one for more flavour ) Garnish with orange peel Large cube Build in a glass or mixing glass. Like Richard said - favourite and best coctail, as you can argue and exchange experience forever on how you like it and why you think your version is superior to others ;)

Try an Old Fashioned made with Laphroaig Quarter Cask!!! You'll never go back to a rye or a bourbon. Sure it's a little more, but the smoke and brine notes take it WAY up. If bourbon, stick with Woodford Bourbon. A Boulevardier made with Laphroaig Quarter Cask is my FAVORITE cocktail - you guys should do this again, but with the Boulevardier!

I use a bar spoon of 2:1 rich turbinado syrup and two dashes of Angostura bitters (plus one dash of orange bitters if I don’t add an expressed orange peel as garnish). Add a large ice cube, pour two ounces of rye whiskey (Old Forester has been the go-to lately), and stir. Express a slab of orange peel around the rim, swish it around inside the drink, garnish with a cherry. One different thing I’ve been doing lately has been muddling a teaspoon of a smoked finishing sugar I picked up at a craft fair with a splash of water in place of turbinado syrup. It works quite well.

Surprised by the Old Fashioned recipe here. I prefer a rye or a peater to balance out the sweetnesses. Orange peel with expression of oils really helps with aroma (no need for fruit or wedge). A better quality cherry (e.g., Luxardo) would also immediately improve. I'm def in the camp of using simple instead of a sugar cube to better control the sweetness level depending on whisky used. No bullshit cherries and I’ll likely not go back to you as my bartender if you add vermouth and mistake my drink for a Manhattan. And although not necessary, I appreciate the extra effort when the orange peel is added. My rye favorites are 1. Basil Hayden 2. Bulleit Rye 3. Knob Creek Rye. For bourbon, I like 1. That guy has been in bar service for 35 years and he's using those neon manufactured cherries? Well, to each his own. I use only bourbon with one bar spoon of simple syrup (gum syrup is the original recipe) which allows uniformity of the sweetness across the drink arc. I'm generous with the bitters dashes, 4ish, and orange peel expressed into, and luxardo cherry.

My personal favourite Bourbon for an Old Fashioned is Jim Beam Black. And if not Bourbon I think Gentleman Jack is also exquisite. Both can be done with a few dashes of normal angostura bitters but you can add a dash of orange bitters on top of the angostura to make it really amazing.

How to drink did an episode on the evolution of the old fashioned. What he said is the original recipe appealed to me because it’s easy and only has a few ingredients. I found that Old Forrester Rye is my favorite and the rest of the drink is a sugar cube, bitters, ice and a slice orange peel. I muddle the peel with the sugar and bitters. It’s my go to cocktail.

I do a little less than 1/4 tsp brown sugar, 4 dashes of bitters, just enough grapefruit sparkling water to dissolve the sugar, 2 oz of old Forrester 1910, twist of orange peel in the drink, rub it around the rim then drop it in the drink with ice.

Two dashes of angostura bitters, two dashes of woodford reserve orange bitters, two luxardo cherries with a little juice, one bar spoon of 2/1 simple syrup and ice. Fill the glass the rest of the way with old forester 1920 and add a slice of orang and lemon skin. My favorite way to make my old fashioned.

My recipe: Bulliet rye, Peychaud's, demerarra syrup, smoked lemon peel Syrup allows you to dial the sugar back, as does omitting the whole fruit, then using Peychaud's instead of Angostura adds back in the fruit flavors without the sugars.

I'm really curious if the shift in the whiskey notes correlate heavily with drinking those whiskey's on the rocks, or if it's the other ingredients in the old fashioned shifting the palate around and masking aspects of each whiskey. Maybe an "On the Rocks" follow up episode is in order to see how the tasting notes compare.
