I often feel how knowledge and experience is shared or discussed will define if the person is an A-hole or not. All people know things, many know more then we first think. Staying curious and listing to what others know helps us grow, and being able to a few things ourselves is a gift, and those that listen will find joy in that. Thanks for sharing!

That matches up with my experiences in grad school. Some professors are brilliant but are A-Holes so you have to take the good with the bad if you're going to stay in the system. The truly great ones that I tried to emulate were brilliant and made you feel joy while learning about the topic. I have gotten this same vibe from you for years! I'm glad you're here and making the world a little better. Cheers!

There is a lot of truth there, sir. For a lot of my young life I was surrounded by people who thought knowledge empowered them and weren't afraid to let everyone else know that so they could feel more powerful. But it's just a tool and that doesn't entitle anyone to be an A-hole. Thank you for another great conversation 🥃

I love Edradour and really enjoy Ballechin. One of my fave stories is that once upon a time, both Edradour and Ballechin were smaller, farm distilleries and we're part of a distilling cooperative with other locals. I believe all the others shuttered, except Edradour. After Signatory bought Edradour and decided to start doing a peated line, they looked to history and revived the Ballechin name, rather than calling it Peated Edradour. ❤ P.S. I have a friend who gets a licorice/anise note from sherried Millstone. I never tasted it, but then randomly picked it up in a recent tasting of core-line Millstone Oloroso. It took a bit for me to hold the note, as it was layered deeper in the back palate. I think it usually hits me as more of a funky Christmas cake note, with baking spices mellowed in. Now I'll have to check my Edradours... 🤔😆

Edradour is amazing, probably cause I like black licorice! It was the only distillery I was able to visit on my only trip to Scotland a few years back. It is picturesque with super friendly staff. Highly recommend it, either to visit or drink their product. One of my faves for sure.

Torabhaig is also a tiny distillery! I think they'll be able to release their first 8-year here in a year or two.

I think Edradour 10 year old (Signatory bottling) and this Ballechin 10 are underrated. The sherry in Edradour is top notch and very value for money for craft whiskey. Ballechin 10 is equally delicious for peated Highland. I found 15 cask strength editions to be too funky and not for the initiated, but Edradour 10 is really great.

A mentor of mine once gave me some advice to live by: You never want to be an expert. Experts are called to testify in court. It’s much better to be considered knowledgeable in your field.

I'm so glad you did an edradour! I hereby challenge you to not enjoy the signatory 10 bottling. Black licorice or not, you won't be able to not enjoy it.

“It is best to remain silent and be thought a fool, then to speak up and remove all doubt”. I’m an introvert and tend to be the quiet one in any room. I’m probably the smartest guy on the planet but I’ll never tell 😊.

I find that experts have confidence in their ability to understand and meet your needs/wants and revel in the challenge. Bullshitters shortcut the understanding and just prescribe from their library of right answers, then become dismissive or defensive when challenged. Also Edradour and Ballechin are too inconsistent to be a staple on my shelf, I've had ones I love but many I really haven't!

I think the problem with experts is that so many have abused their positions - especially when they use it to drift outside their area of expertise. Other times, people without the expertise present themselves as experts. Back when I was in the Navy, I had to explain to people that I had no issue with authority - but I absolutely bristle at people trying to assert unearned authority.

I say it to my husband all the time when he starts feeling like an imposter. If you know how much you don't know about a subject you're speaking on... You are probably one of the smarter or more educated people in the room on the subject.

Huh, i don't get an anise note from edradour. I think it's a sherry bomb but with more earthy dirt like qualities.
@WhiskeyVault12 күн бұрын
I think my brain translates that earth/dirt mixed with sherry funk as a type of licorice direction

A request ... when you add water and don't like the results, it'd be helpful to us if you tell us the proof. Actually, helpful even when you do like it. Personally, I find that adding water to a whisky can help in pulling apart or teasing out subtle flavors, but when it comes to enjoying whisky, lower proof expressions generally fall apart. It's only in higher proof whiskies that a touch of water may increase my enjoyment, but even then only rarely. Maybe I'm a proof whore, but I really enjoy all the flavor that a higher proof whisky carries. But anyway, knowing the proof would help us get more out of your tasting when you add some water. Thanks!

At least you experience it as a licorice note. At first I loved Edradour but over time I got a flavor that reminds me of the specific cleaning products I used to clean animal kennels when I worked at a veterinarian office when I was in high school. Can't get past it and now Edradour is ruined for me. 😅

Any experts that belittle others in their specialized fields, are a-holes. TRUE experts, I think, would like to at least explain a particular field more to someone first.
