Finally finished paying off all of my student loans and decided to celebrate and get some whiskey. Bought some Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg 10. To me Lagavulin tastes very similar to Talisker and Ardbeg similar to Laphroaig. Without this channel I would not have ventured to explore whiskey -- Thank you guys and girls.

I strongly agree with you guys that a special Friday Whisk(e)y Review would be a very agreeable and much appreciated change. We don’t have a regular WV vid on Saturdays (because it’s the Whisk(e)y Tribe video posting) and there’s nothing new posted on Sundays so doing the weekender kick off on Friday makes a lot of sense. I put a lot of value in these reviews as do many others. I’ve even been showing liquor store clerks some of your reviews and they are grateful for the info and love the highjinxs. I’m spreading the whisk(e)y gospel, but I often get funny looks because I think many people still have a negative view of whiskies. Drinking hard spirits in general is often only acceptable for some people when it’s in a cocktail. Your videos have helped me convince two of my friends that whiskies aren’t bad but a gift. Keep up the good work! 🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃🥃

Picked up a whiskey the other day just on bottle/cork alone and gotta say I was not disappointed. Have you guys ever had Caribou Crossing single barrel Canadian whiskey? I'm a scotch guy myself but I feel like I don't see a lot of Canadian whiskey being branded as single barrel and found this to be an interesting find.

I like that you guys use your home bars to explore. Since starting to watch your channel, and (almost more importantly) finding a new liquor store with a vast selection (for NYC), I don't think I've repeated a bottle since Christmas. I'm currently sitting on a Classic Laddie, a Tomatin, Auchentoshen American Oak (which has grown on me since last commenting on it), Bowmore Bourbon Cask, one of each of the Jameson Caskmates, an Elijah Craig Small Batch, and the Corsair Triple Smoke. I've also started an Infinity Bottle that currently has remnants of Compass Box Artist's Blend and Redemption High Rye Bourbon.

Also... I'm definitely not a rep. Because I'm a baker and I bake for this distillery. Catoctin Creek rye. They have 3 kinds. I like the roundstone rye. Plus they have expanded to 26 states, Washington DC and even ship outside the country. So it's not really obscure at all. It's a rye... It's 100% rye (rare), it's delicious and it's more available than some things some people send in. I'd send it to you but I don't have the cash for that stuff. But this place is great and deserves a review by the best whiskey review channel out there... Other than whiskey impressions. Shout-out to my whiskey friend.

Hey guys, love the show, and much to Daniel's dismay, I am a Bourbon (Kentucky Straight) fanatic even though I live in Houston, though I look forward to visiting the distillery when you're done. My question is, if you are sipping your whisky slowly, is it better to cover the glass with some sort of cap in order to prevent the whisky from getting too much air, or does this not matter at all in terms of flavor? Keep on keeping on men, may your adventures be swashbuckling
@ericschwab4096 жыл бұрын
You can use a dished piece of glass called a “watch glass” to cover your glencairn or other drinking vessel. The trick is to find the correct diameter watch glass to cover your vessel. Watch glassses are used a lot in laboratories to cover beakers etc. You can buy them online. I think a 50 or 65 mm glass would easily cover a glencairn glass. www.labconusa.com/Watch_Glass_50mm.html Amazon has a number of different sizes available too for reasonable prices. The Pyrex ones are the best (tough)

There is an other French single malt whiskey I would like to try. It’s a Breton (from Brittany next door to Normandy) and called “Armorik” and the distillery is Warenghem which was founded in 1900. Dear Daniel and Rex just started drinking whiskey and can't seem to get past the burning sensation. Any tips from the pros?
@ericschwab4096 жыл бұрын
Try a gentle Highland Scotch like Dalwhinnie or add some ice or water to your whiskey. The ice shuts down the flavors a lot but numbs your tongue a bit to the burning of the ethanol a little. The best thing to do is actually drink more whiskies and your brain 🧠 will become accustomed to the ethanol and it won’t be as harsh. The reaction you have to the alcohol is a natural reaction to a potential toxin. If you drink it more, your body goes down to defcon 2 and eventually ignores it

Hey, you've talked about how different climates affect the distilling process with regards to taste results. What do places with significant climate changes do to standardize their products? I presume they do certain processes at the same time each year prior to placing in casks ??? If they do, do the distilleries say in Scotland, typically all do the same processes at the same time, kinda like a season for a certain process?
@ericschwab4096 жыл бұрын
I think traditionally American whiskies were distilled in the fall after the corn crops were harvested. That was when farmers did distilling as a side job for extra money. It fit in with the end of the harvest and winter slaughtering of livestock (pigs were traditionally killed in the winter when it was cold because it helped preserve the meat). There doesn’t seem to be much info available about when distilling was done in Scotland or Ireland, but I’m sure it was done in sequence after the harvest was in. I think it probably didn’t matter much as to when much of the work was done though. You probably just had to have it warm enough so the water was liquid, the barley would germinate, the yeast would ferment, and you wouldn’t freeze to death when you filled the barrels. With consumption of whiskies at an all time high, I think it’s a year round business now for the bigger distillers. The smaller guys who knows?
@ericschwab4096 жыл бұрын
Neil, Here’s a link to an interesting article on barley and scotch production. There are 5,500 strains of barley but only about 6-9 varieties are used for Scotch: flaviar.com/blog/barley-in-the-whisky-making-process

Here’s a whisky nerd question (sorry Rex). Do you have any guidelines with respect to blending whiskys? Are there certain flavors that stand out more than others? e.g. will peat overwhelm other flavors? What about stronger whiskys, like cask strength whiskys mixing with whisky bottled at 43/46%? Last note, can we bring back #rexweek?!?!

So, Rex and Danny, I don't care about the whiskys being reviewed on this episode. I've been really enjoying the Dalmore 12 and Naked Grouse lately. I was wondering what I should try out next.
@ericschwab4096 жыл бұрын
Black Bottle and Cutty Sark before you try too many others.....some people look down on these but ignore that and just try them. I thought they were shit based upon experiences I had many years ago. That was until I tasted them again recently. They aren’t expensive but if you like grouse, these two I mentioned take you on a nice trip of flavor and history. Try Monkey Shoulder too just for the record. Then try Glenfiddich 12 and Bunnahabhain 12 at some point to get some single malt under your belt. These are just my suggestions. Others will have different ideas.
