So here is an interesting thing. I live in Ireland and burn turf for heating. T When I clear out the fire the Ash normally smells like a peated malt Nd makes me want to have a dram. But if noticed that depending on who I buy my turf from the smell can be very different. Even if the source is only a few miles apart. Sometimes like a beautiful Lagavulin sometimes ashy and not nearly as pleasant. I now believe the turf source make a huge difference in whiskey.

Give it about 3-4 weeks and a few glasses less in the bottle and it will change. At least it did for me, the peat was more present with fresh cut grassy notes, but the overall smoke was tamed. Honey suckle was definitely present, but then again my memory fades of that bottle as I return to my first love Scotch Ardbeg 10 yr, and also dabbling in some bourbon in this heat. But Port Charlotte is absolutely a favorite if it wasn't for it's rarity in my area and slightly higher price point vs. Ardbeg. Glad you revisited the new Port Charlotte (been waiting for this episode/experience), and wish I had a chance to try the old.

Just compared Port Charlotte with Ardbeg 10. PC comes in hot with 100 proof, and although the depth is intense, the heat vaporizes or shortens some of what could have been the lasting peat flavor. It is like an Octomore in that the high peat levels sometimes get outshined by the alcohol content. On the other hand, Ardbeg 10's peat, which I feel is unique to Islay, lasts and lasts. I enjoyed the PC 10 year but I enjoyed the Ardbeg 10 more because of that unmistakable LASTING peat flavor.

Peat means Smokey flavour?
@gclar0143 жыл бұрын
@@davidfernandez1056 When a whisky has peat in it or has been peated. That means that the barley has been infused with smoke from burning peat during the drying of the malted barley. Peat is moss, roots, and dense vegetation and mud from bogs in Scotland that are cut into bricks, dried, then can be burned. This imparts phenols into the barley that come out as "smokey, oily, salty, meaty, cheese, funk, earth, moss" and so on.
