Apparently, and according to JD's master distiller Jeff Arnett, Sinatra Select is closer to the standard Jack Daniels of Frank's era. The stronger, darker stuff that he would have enjoyed. JD has since become a large-volume producer and major marketing machine since those days, and watered down their core product. So now you have to spend $150 to get the good stuff that is comparable to the real Old No.7 from fifty years ago. That's progress!

You say that as though it was by choice, the government has become more strict on whiskey distillers, and they also have to keep with the times, either move with the crowd or get left behind and forgotten about, back then they didn't have so much competition and people didn't have changing tastes

I think the Single Barrels and the Sinatra Select are different spirits. Couldn´t say one is better than the other. I consider myself a Jack Daniels fan, and personally love both of them. In my humble opinion, the Sinatra Select has the very same flavor INTENTION than the Old No 7, but exquisitely perfected. Makes me think that it must be very much like the Old No 7 that Franky used to enjoy at those times, before industry made everything (not only whiskey) less magical and more chemical.... Thank you Mr. Luening, for the knowledge and love for whiskey that you share! Really love your work!

In the United States this version of Jack Daniel’s averages $125. For those prices, Frank Sinatra can keep this one. Speaking of Sammy Davis Jr. I’ve heard stories of how Frank Sinatra used to get mad at him for drinking Jack with Coke, because it “ruined the taste”. I only drink the original Old No. 7 with cola, but the special select ones like the Single Barrel and the new one called Bonded I just sip on ice. Because they taste better.

I think that Jack Daniels cares more about their whiskey then you say. I know it's a matter of opinion. I am a lover of all the Jack Daniels and I do agree that the black label isn't as good as the others in the Jack family it's still a very good whiskey. But I would say they do care about the quality of their whiskey though. I love your videos they are very helpful to my selection process but that one thing kind of stung me a bit. Cheers from Canada.

It's obvious he doesn't like JD, but I wouldn't take that statement literally. I think something is lost in translation... I think he just means that Old No. 7 is mass produced and therefore not in the league of those whiskeys he loves. I don't think he literally means JD doesn't give a hoot about what they put in a bottle and try to sell to the public. But I could be wrong.

This is interesting that Jack Daniel's Old No. 7 is the weakest of the JD products, in spite of sales. When it comes to the other JD whiskeys, they do better. However if the Old No. 7 is in the wishes of Mr. Daniel, it should continue to be respected. Their side of the business will never suffer. On the contrary, it will get better.

Christopher Casey Thats because the average person doesn't have the training, the taste buds or the natural talent to know these things, so they end up being fooled by numbers and marketing, same problem with democracy really, mass ruling would be best, if the masses were intelligent, unfortunately two dumb people can outfits one smart person, same sort of principle really.

@@arrynchaos9912 So would you prefer rule by one person selected by birth? What if that person is an idiot? Actually that’s what happens most of the time in a monarchy. Democracy is the best we can do until all people are perfect, actually a republic solves the problem of the complexity of the modern world. You have a full time specialist bureaucracy that serves under the elected officials

I'm curious what the difference really is between Single Barrel and Sinatra Select. It seems to me the SS is charging 3X the price for grooves in the barrel, if you don't count the Ole' Frankie Boy branding. And that's the only difference between the two whiskeys, correct? I get that machined grooves presents more inner-cask area to the distillate, hence, potentially promoting a stronger caramelized oak flavour. But... wouldn't the same effect occur in a Single Barrel (sans grooves) where the barrel is located in a hotter room as South US distillers are known to do? The day/night temperature variations provide the distillate more of a natural respiration into the walls of the cask. So a SS barrel in the basement might be pretty darn close to a SB in the attic... or am I missing something? I'm a whiskey noob but learning... I hope. I love this KZbin channel, Horst. Please keep up the good work.

There is about as much variation in American whiskey as there is in Scotch. I for one don’t buy into the so called “regional variations” in Scotch whisky. That’s a marketing gimmick dreamed up in the 90s by someone. The fact that a whisky is from Islay does not give it a peaty flavor. Peat can be used anywhere in Scotland. So can Sherry casks. There might be some affect from sea air if the whisky is aged in the coast. Other than that the equipment used will offer variation, as will cask, and time. All those affect whisky and whiskey everywhere
