I'm a new whisky drinker and bought this as my second bottle after Monkey Shoulder. All I can say is THIS is what I had in mind when it came to whiskey, so much spice in the mouth, smooth going down, and all that sweet vanilla taste with a lasting oak on the palette. Delicious stuff I'm going to always keep a bottle on hand!

I was never a fan of JD but after seeing a few reviews on the tube I bought a bottle. I am simply astounded at how good this actually is. Such a great and complex tasting whisky. Amazing and a big thumbs up.

I have this bottle, purchased for a little over $50 US. Mine had 47% ABV. Definitely much of the aldehyde "solvent" smell you pointed out, but also deliciously oaky. I loved this whiskey, though I must add the Gentleman Jack is not a bad casual drink either.

I'm enjoying some of it while I watch this, except my barrel is n° 6, not 15. Mine is 47% alcohol, not 45%. I felt quite a lot more caramel and floral notes at first, with the spices kicking in afterwards and drying the tongue. The smell has a touch of wax and honey, and it's embodied with an oily texture. In the matter of smell and texture, kind of reminded me of the Tenessee Honey version. Although it's a stronger and more complex flavor, with some toasty oak, I found it quite smoother than the regular blends of the brand. Gotta say, not disappointed with my purchase.

Acetone is the solvent smell you get from corn whiskeys. Its the way the ethanol interacts with the corn aromas, it does jump out at you as acetone. That's off putting for some people until they realize it doesn't TASTE like nail polish remover :P

How did you get so good at tasting whiskey? Did you take a class? I feel like whiskeys all taste pretty similar to me. I can usually only distinguish a few key differences, but not the depth of flavor that you can.

danw31415 it comes with experience and time. Try to expand the types of whiskies you try. Try some single malts, some different bourbons of different age and origin. Most beginners don't really taste deep differences, but the more you tried, the more you can distinguish

I agree with what Randy said. I like to keep a single malt scotch, and a Bourbon on me at all times. Not on me literally, but at home. Get one of each, taste them both, and you will certainly be able to distinguish between the two. Then slowly start buying other bottles that interest you. It's a fun hobby, just as long as you're not a lush. Well... I'm sure it'd be a fun hobby either way.

Randy K. The problem with drinkers are they drink whisky like they drink Coke. They put ice in it and mix it with Coke. If you want to get drunk, don't do it with expensive scotch or expensive whisky. These whisky's must be taken neat.

Taste as much whisky as you can. Share it with friends and discuss the different smells and tastes that you all get. This is how you learn. Don't drink bottles of whisky and get drunk though because you will just forget what it tastes like the next day and you will waste good whisky.

kinda old post and you already know the answer to your question but if not I'll give a shot at it. the distilling is same for every bottle but the difference between these two bottles is where the cask is placed. Silver select is quaranteed to come from the top floors and single barrel is most likely from the upper parts of the warehouse you don't know for sure how high up it's from

***** oh man.....you're right. The finish on regular JD is heavy in acetone...like the old model airplane glue. As an American I just can't understand the attraction. There are literally hundreds (thousands?) of better American whiskies than this. It pains me that this is the whisky so closely associated with the USA. It it's also way over priced. I just bought a bottle of Elijah Craig, Small Batch Bourbon for not much more than the cost of JD and it is just superb

+inkey2 Mc Donalds didn't become so big because it tastes unspectacular or even bad. A lot of people seem to prefer the underdog simply because it appears more personal to you and gives one the feeling of an "insiders tip" expertise of rare taste but to be absolutely fair, there's no reasonable reason to dislike McDonalds if you're into burgers. Just because they're big. It's about the quality of a product. If you got a more refined taste that's a different thing. Mc Donalds doesn't do what Jack Daniels does. While supporting a mass market with a cheap mass product that won't give much exitement to connoisseurs and enthusiasts anymore Jack Daniels also produces Whiskys of much higher quality in much lower numbers. Therefor the comparison is a premature one, as it doesn't do those two companies and their product range justice.
