This is more than just helpful, it’s educational for someone like me who thought all my 1080p blu-rays were rendered useless with my new Sony XBR 950. Thank you! Any recommendations for settings when playing an old DVD from my 1080p blu-ray player to my new TV?

I'm very glad you found it useful my friend! The same steps apply for standard definition which is to reduce many of the settings that you don't need to see the image as it was intended. Thank you Joe!

Hi Whisper! Enjoying your vids as I'm a new owner of a Sony 900E. Love the tv but have a question regarding the stand. The tv seems to have a little bit of a lean or tilt back on it when on the stand. Is this normal?

Scott Davis hi Scott!! There might be a slight bend to the bezel which perhaps makes it look like it's leaning . If the tv has no problems in terms of pic qaulity and show no signs of damage then I wouldn't worry about it at all. Thank you for your question and for checking out the videos and channel

Brian, I realize this is an old video, but I was wondering if you could help me with a decision on a TV - incidentally, I agree with you one hundred percent about keeping SDR settings for Blu-ray and DVD at low values in terms of backlight and other parameters; that's how I have my current Samsung set, with backlight at 11 out of 50 for SDR (in the dark) and defaults for HDR. I have been running an edge lit Samsung NU8000 since around 2018 when the model came out, and I can't stand the blooming in letterbox areas of scope films in HDR when we watch in the dark. I wanted to move to OLED because of the black levels, but I am concerned that they don't get bright enough for proper HDR highlights, which many reviewers say. Should I be looking at a FALD LCD, mini LED, OLED or QD-OLED for my next display if our viewing is mostly dark room viewing of DVDs, Blu-rays and UHD Blu-rays?

Brian, I watched your instructional video on settings for the 900E (after watching your video on the exceptional 900F), you alluded that the settings should apply to the 900F (my model). I purchased the 85-inch 900F ~two years ago, and have been most unhappy with it. I’ve owned many top-tier XBR SONY tv’s for many years, but struggle with this 4K model. The TV shows excellent on demos (i.e., KZbin 4K), but my Directv 4K receiver and 4K Sony Blu-ray are average at best! My Appletv is perhaps acceptable, it lacks the POP I expected. I have top tier HDMI cables connected on all inputs. The colour, contrast, vividnesses, and vibrance leaves much to be desired. There always seems to be a milky film on the surface. I’ve followed your settings and have been tweaking said settings since ownership. I have top-tier HDMI cab les connected and I’m exhausted and disappointed!!!! I’m not happy with this purchase...Does this tv require professional calibration? Please HELP!!! I would greatly appreciate any advisement. Thanks for listening.

Great video, will these settings be best for regular satellite cable 1080 content, tv shows, sports.... I have Dish with the new 4k hopper 3 and regular HD doesnt look very good, however I did adjust the settings for HDR content. Would this video give me good settings for regular 1080 use in addition to blue ray?
@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY

Trent Pickering yes these settings are designed for non HDR 1080p content . Turning off X-tended Dynamic Range is key as it adds grain and noise to a non HDR image however is essential for HDR. I hope this helps and thank you for your question and for checking out the videos and channel

Hi Whisper! After seeing this video and all of the related 900E gaming setting videos, something came to my mind. Usually we're talking about gaming settings for the current generation of video games or high-end PCs... But, please look at my case: I have a PS4, a high-end PC AND... a PS3 ;) I believe the case of the PS3 is more or less the same as the 1080p content: there is several games on PS3 that uses 1080p resolution, but many others (including personal favorites as Killzone 2) that outputs only at 720p. And that's the catch: the gaming settings for 720p games, or even all the PS3 games - because it is another generation, far less powerful, less sharper and less detailed than the current generation... In my case, I tried to play with your settings (that I'm using for PS4 and PC), just to make sure I'm having the less possible noise, artifacting etc. Basically, what I've done so far is to disable "Reality Creation", "Smooth gradation" and "X-tendend Dynamic Range". I keep "Black adjust" on High, though. I'm not sure if XDR really has to be disabled, but I did. So, if you think this subject is interesting, I would like to ask you: - What you think of my changes (listed above)? Do you think they are correct considering the goals I talked about? - What are your suggestions? - What you think of making a video of gaming settings for "older" video games? ;) Or... you think I should use the same gaming settings for everything and I'm just being crazy... :) Congratulations again for all your videos!

Diego Fávero never crazy my friend!! We are all crazy !! You definelty should have separate settings for different games or content, the better the content such as native 4k pc games the more you can push settings without issue. Upscaled 1080p should be handled like this movie and you can toy with reality creation In small increments. For the ps3 try using HDMI 1 as it's not full band with and doesn't need to be and you may see an improvement and try reality creation as well. Hope this helps and all your settings look good my friend

Question: Just purchased a Sony OLED. Love it for the most part, however occasionally when watching TV or a movie, people (or actors on the screen) seem a little like a cutout in front of the background. Kinda like South Park but live-action. lol Is that Reality Creation? Or Sharpness too high? Or is it something else?
@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY
@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your question my friend! In my opinion on 4k content sharpness should be at its default settings which is 50. Reality creation in my opinion causes to many artifacts to be useful. Also check your motion settings as it sounds like you are also experiencing the soap opera effect of motion interpolation . Let me know if this helps and thank you for your question

Thanks for the response! :-) Yeah I definitely turn off the motion settings if I can. Although with Dolby Vision content the True Cinema motion setting seems better for some reason, otherwise the picture is really juddery. It's weird, DV doesn't look very good to me. Not sure why. Maybe you have figured out better settings than I have.

I concur! Gamma down for 1080p BluRay, gamma up for 4K HDR discs. I can't comment on Xtended Dynamic Range until I get a X940E where it works; it throttles the image BAD with 1080p Blu Ray. Black adjust at high for everything. I prefer HDMI video range at Full, with Black Level between 30-34, provides a deep dark detailed image (I might be crazy, but I'm ALMOST convinced "HDR" is 0-255 RGB Full).

Man I really hope you can do a video just like this for HDR movies and have it be a point to clean up film grain which isn't as much of a problem but also allow the movie to be more visible instead of being dark and dull. It's whatever you think is best but I really have been disappointed in some 1080P content and I'm excited and I just programmed this into my cinema home and I will have cinema pro for 4KHDR. If you feel like you already have a video just like this one for 4K let me know which one it is

good work man 👌. I have a question. I had the 900e for about 2 months with one issue. The things is everytime or most of the time when I turn off the TV I switch on the next day or so there is a problem with the motionflow. starts to get artifacts and stuttering if it's on ( doesn't matter if it's true cinema or smooth, etc).. you can discover it clearly by putting on some 24p test on KZbin. For now the only way to solve this that I discovered is to turn on the TV, press the TV button to show the satellite, tdt (I mean TV channels) and then it works again.. until I discovered the fix it was a nightmare to watch. Firmware maybe? someone with the same problem?.. can you try to reproduce it maybe?.. thanks. sorry for the length..

@ethanx9089
@ethanx9089 6 жыл бұрын
Whisper Status 74 thanks for the answer. No, it doesn't have to do with hdmi ports. I get this without any ports connected, using the app netflix, KZbin, etc. tried all the hdmi ports too with the pc.. same result. Did a hard reset 2 times, didn't help. Don't know if it's firmware related. Bought it and updated straight away to the last version. If you can do some test, just to know if it's just me or more people have this issue. I would try the TV for a couple of days without switching to TV for the test.. just using the build in apps .If you want of course.. thanks again.

I probably need to get a Standalone 4K Player and not use the XBox One S cause the Bluray versions included in the disc sets from the stores, looks superb in color and picture compared to the 4K versions on the movies I have gotten. I don't know why but I think the XBox One S drowns out the color and white washes it as it MAKES you have to turn on HDR to get the color but it then dims the screen so dark from the HDR that it's not appealing anymore...did a test between the XBox One S and the PS4 on Blurays and the PS4 plays them perfectly...XBox adds in flickering and more noise...not as good in color either. So I might look into one when taxes come back...for now though, I will watch most stuff in Bluray still. Yeah, I still watch Bluray...hell, I still watch older shows on old DVD versions in 480p like Miami Vice and Xena...still look great on the x900e...Fringe on Bluray is amazing playing on the PS4 on the x900e...looks better than The Dark Knight I have on 4K...I also watch PSVUE every day streaming on PS4 and Anteena as we cut the cord from High Cable...those all look great...

If I upgrade my set this year & my blu ray collection looks worse I will not be happy. I know these sets have to upscale 1080p to 2160p but I would like them to look as good as my current plasma. Is this possible with OLED? I realize 4k UHD BDs would be my upgrade but I'm not throwing out my old BDs & I won't be upgrading all of them to a 4k version. You have me a little worried now.

Maul Xx I currently have the 930e and came from a Samsung 8 series plasma. You would think I would have gone with an OLED. But the 900 is basically the same display because I had the 900e at first and these were my first Sony TVs. I am with you when I first got these TVs I was worried about the picture but if you have time you can tune these TVs to ANYTHING!!! Check out the 930e settings from Modernwise. Once u plug these in go back and tweak them to your liking. The only thing is if you have the 900e the brightness will be higher. Trust you will not regret!!! Obviously all TVs have faults but after these TVs I don’t see myself buying anything else apart from Sony.

I know the input lag in this tv is much lower in 4K than in 1080. If I connect my PS4 (regular) in it, can I upscale the image to 4K and enjoy the lower input lag? Or will the TV set it to 1080 anyway and I'll have crappy input lag?
@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY
@BRIANSTECHTHERAPY 5 жыл бұрын
That's a tough question as the standard ps4 will deliver a 1080p source to the display and upconvert while the ps4pro or xbox one x will be able to be set to 4k and the display will then take it as a 4k source and you'll receive the 4k input lag. Ridiculous i know but the standard ps4 and xbox one were never patched to push out 4k. So unfortunately you'd have to upgrade the console as well. Whisper Status 74 Yes sir. I see people with there settings on here and everything is at Max. I am just stunned that anyone would find the picture pleasing like that. Mine is geared for the deepest black levels. Everything is set based on achieving that. Xtended dynamic range is so off. Destroys the picture. Only in HDR is it on. When I'm watching 4k Blu-Ray with HDR I drop the black levels from 49 to 25 because I want the deepest black levels. It's what gives the picture contrast, depth.

Am I the only one on good ole Earth who doesn't want to hurt his eyesight nowadays? Max backlight, max this, max that. Gee, Is a TV now another source of lighting in your house? 10 years ago, picture quality and realistic colors were the way to go. Now (and I experienced it during my last shopping spreee for a TV), the 2020 way to go is to have the most luminous, unreal colors, saturated, ultra bright image, ultra warm, ultra pop. Slap my fingers if necessary. But someone please explain this mystery to me. Must be my old age I guess.

Great comment Racineur! You also couldn't be more right and what I think has changed is when HDR came onto the scene the numbers in terms of nits became a factor so with each year the goal is to top the last year. The max backlight is enabled automatically by the display as well as other features to display HDR simply because without that the display will dim and become unwatchable. The challenge is to control that light output effectively. Without HDR I believe the brightness wouldn't even be discussed and the same with the oversaturation of colors which I believe manufacturers think works in tandem with high peak brightness. Great comment and I thank you for taking the time to watch the video and channel

hello, how this tv and the x900f (2018) do the scaling of 1080p? y want buy the x900f but i dont know how good or bad are the scaling to 1080p, because of god of war I prefer to play at 1080p performance mode instead of resolution, and also because y have a gtx1070 and it can´t do 4k60fps on the most games, because of that, anyone can tell me how look 1080p or 2k content on this tv? or the newer the x900f??? thankss

Yharnam city of blood the upscaling on the 900E is excellent but I would say that its probably slightly better on the 900F due to the extreme 1 chip.

Companies should Re-think & SIMPLIFY Settings !,...like (Day or Night viewing ),...and (1080 or 4K source),.... With ALL these settings ,..Most people will probably make image worst than Sony Engineers intended !

I completely agree integra especially out of the box which has so many features engaged that might look good in a movie or game but cable or sports will look horrible. Thank you so much for the great comment and for watching the video and channel

People blow out the image on their tvs, to bright, and to saturated with color and contrast. Brightness here is way to high, contrast is to high, black ajust should be off, contrast enhancer should be off, just to name a few things. I have the 55” 900e, and i dont have everything maxed out and blowing up the screen with processing and over saturation. Movies like Oblivion, and Pacific Rim look beyond amazing. People are to use to thinking that super bright, and over saturated color makes for a good image.

Thomas Anderson why do you say Black adjust should be set to off? I’ve been playing around a bit with settings and was curious to know what the trade off was when it’s on and the higher it is.

In my opinion, the more processing to the image the worse it makes things. I find the this tv can be amazing with just a few tweaks. As for the trade off, to my eyes it adds unnecessary processing. This tv has a full array black light, and a VA screen which is good for contrast. Those two things alone work great, IMO, but everyones eyes see differently, so really there are no across the board perfect settings. All i know is that my 900e looks sharp, crisp, with great colors, and HDR, and i only made a few tweaks.

Why don't you buy an Oled and enjoy inky black without worrying that black bars would tourn grey washed out if you turn the backlight to 10 or more???

My panny plasma also does 1080p better than my 4k display which is why I always say to take upscaling marketing with a grain of salt and then here comes 8k
