Roger Miller included "Whistle Stop" on his 1973 album, "Dear Folks, Sorry I Haven't Written Lately." In 2009 The Boomtang Boys created a sped-up sample of Miller's "Whistle Stop" for an internet video and subsequent single, "The Hampster Dance." In 2009 Los Lobos recorded "Oo-De-Lally" for their DisneySound album, "Los Lobos Goes Disney," and the song was also heard in the feature film Fantastic Mr. Fox. In 2012 The Coasts covered the Robin Hood songs in a Disneyland Records album. Most recently, Roger Miller's recording of "Oo-De-Lally" was heard in a 2015 television commercial featuring animal buddies.

Story meeting notes from 1969 note the story team's desire to have the film be musical, but with the admonition that the music have an "up-to-date" sound. As with all previous Disney animated features, the music serves to tell the story, move the action along, and convey the feelings of the characters. With the styling influenced by the western outlaw theme, the producers naturally turned to one of the most popular country-western composer/singers of the day, Roger Miller, whose hits included "King of the Road," and "Dang Me." His folksy composition for the opening sequence, "Oo-De-Lally," sets the musical tone for the film while introducing the characters and relationship of Robin Hood and Little John: "walkin' through the forest /Laughin' back and forth at what the other'ne has to say /Reminiscin', this-'n'-thattin' havin' such a good time 10o-de-lally, oo-de-lally, golly, what a day." It's a bouncy, lightly countrified approach that reminds listeners of the folk ballads that originally carried the tales of Robin Hood through the centuries. "Oo-de-lally" is a nonsense phrase akin to those that, like "Hey nonny nonny," abound in old English traditional songs. Miller, voicing the minstrel rooster Allan-a-Dale, recorded the demo tape of "Oo-De-Lally" on October 13, 1969. Other versions were recorded, including an even more western-style version, and Miller recorded it again in July, 1970. By October the producers chose to use Miller's demo recording in the final soundtrack. Authors of The Disney Song Encyclopedia Thomas S. Hischak and Mark A. Robinson call Miller's "Whistle Stop" a "contagious calliope-like number" in which he whistles and provides a "vocal imitation of medieval instruments, creating a period and yet contemporary sound" -just what the producers wanted. A "ragtime" version was also recorded.
