I can't say enough about how you and your videos have helped me, I have a grade II listed money pit, six rooms renovated and then I finished the main bedroom just before xmas (a major task) but I struggled to move onto the next room, I have watched many videos on YT but yours have reinvigorated me, the day after watching your 3rd restoration video I was off, the next room on the list was the one I have had the most ear bashing about so carpet up, bloody screed? I will tap it I thought and see, underneath about a half inch to inch and a half of cement based material I found the yellow floor bricks and then it all came back to me, Thanks a million. Oh and just a quick one, you routed your skirting with a Bit I couldn't find could you let me know where it came from, cheers.

+Heath Morgan , Thanks for your comments, its good to know it's providing some inspiration. Off the top of my head the router bit cam from Axminster, but the "qurik" was square on the standard cutter so I had to grind it back to give the quirk an angle.

Excellent job thanks. P.S. Thanks for the beginners guide to buying timber on your website, very useful. If you have a chance to add any more stuff about hardwood that would be much appreciated.
@idostuffcouk10 жыл бұрын
I have plans to do some on hardwood but it'll be about trees to timber. It'll be a while though before I do any more felling and milling. I've never bough much hardwood from timber merchants so I don't feel I could give much first hand advice unfortunately.

I've been following your blog with interest, but also as I'm just about to remove the cement ribbon pointing on the front of my house and repoint in lime. Yours looks so much better with it done! Can I ask - did you have your stone cleaned? It certainly looks like it from the video, and if so, how?
@noillucs33928 жыл бұрын
Hi excuse my ignorance regarding lime repointing. What my question is how do you prevent the lime from crumbling or rubbing off. I know that once plastering is finished that a sealant of a weak wallpaper paste and water, seals new plaster what no idea about lime used to repoint stone.
@idostuffcouk8 жыл бұрын
Essentially the lime reacts with oxygen and reverts to limestone. There are many sources on the web that can explain it better than me. I have tried adding milk casein to lime paint to make it harder wearing.
@noillucs33928 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I'll look it up.Ta

Also what is lime plastering and is it essential to use on stone buildings? I remember Whitewash being used on old building. I assume this is to prevent insects from harming the building.
@idostuffcouk8 жыл бұрын
The main reson for using Lime mortars and paints on old building is for "breath-ability" or moisture vapour permeability. Any moisture that gets in to the stone of brick has an easy way to evaporate away. Cement and modern paints trap the moisture in causing damp problems and degradation of the brick or stone. Lime wash is also fungicidal.

Are you planning to keep the cottage as a vacation spot or are you going to sell it once it is complete? How far from your primary residence is the cottage?
