Hi and thanks for video, just one question, how do you keep the adaptor from moving back up when pushing the flue pipe up , @ about 13 mins ,thanks
@idostuffcoukАй бұрын
Just gravity and the springiness of the flue. It takes quite a bit of pushing to force the adaptor straight up so a bit of pushing whilst twisting the flue pipe seats it quite easily.

Is it better to leave it in longer than overnight, like 2 days, or will it dry up/lose effect?
@idostuffcoukАй бұрын
If left too long it could just soak all the moisture in to the wall, it all starts drying out and hardening up again.
@Blindmonkey69Ай бұрын
@idostuffcouk thanks, so overnight is probably the 'sweet spot'?

Brilliant video which has help me a lot, but I have one question. At about 10:57 you mention staining the back wall of the fireplace with a concoction of charcoal powder and potassium silicate. Do you have any more information on this?

If you look up silicate paints it hardens as breathable and heat resistant. You can mix your own with any stable pigment.

Yes, the top of of the chimney stack was in a bad state, the top four courses were taken down and rebuilt and the old pots put back on all the rest was re-pointed. The had cowls added.

Brilliant! Have tried and works very well. My top tip: Use some food dye in the mix. I find it helps identify where you've pasted and where you haven't. I've all the ceilings in the house to do unfortunately. I've tried with and without the newspaper and am continuing without. I use a light duty staple gun to help secure the plastic sheeting. This method works so well that the Artex is separating from the ceilng in very large sheets with just a little help from the scraper (actually a putty knife). I tried a sharp bladed scraper very like what 's in the video ,but it leaves too many gouges. Basic scraper seems better for my scenario. The ceiling won't even need anything other than fresh paint. I can hardly believe it. Thanks again :D

Fantastic video, extremely well explained and enjoyed watching the video. If you have time to respond, no worries if not, some of my sealant has come off the colar/ flue connection. What is the best way to remove so I can reapply around the pipe rather than just the bits that have come off, and is there a recommendation for sealant/ cement ? One that can be sprayed afterwards to match the stove colour?
@andybell61894 ай бұрын
Fire cement is brittle and the constant expansion and contraction of the metal often causes it to chip off however the main body of it in the joint tends to keep it well sealed so it more of a cosmetic problem than functional. Chipping it out with a screw driver of similar is the only way unless you dismantle the joint. Re-pack it with fresh fire cement that can be sprayed when completely dry.
@filipbali4 ай бұрын
Many thanks feedback very much appreciated. Actually I can fit a small (satay) wooden stick inbetween the collar and the pipe where the cement is normally located so when you say it’s just estethetics maybe my issue is more foundational that either the flue or collar is not properly fitted. The wooden stick goes all the way in the stove is that normal!? Don’t think I can add a photo here but if I can will do.
@andybell61894 ай бұрын
@@filipbali In that case yes it need fixing before you use it. If the gap is wide when all the old cement is dug out, it can help if you first pack it out with the braided outer layer of fire rope.

Need to do this to a bathroom ceiling soon. Still I need to plaster or anything after or is it ok to sand and paint
@andybell61895 ай бұрын
If there is anything left on the ceiling, wash it off with a wet cloth. avoid sanding as this creates dust that you don't want to be inhaling. These coating where often applied to cover up plaster that had cracks in it, you may find you need to do some remedial work before repainting. Various fillers and reinforcing tapes are available.
@squizza285 ай бұрын
I thought the liner should go to the top of the chimney pot, otherwise there's a sudden drop in temperature as soon as the exhaust gases get to there, so you'll get smoke hanging around the top.

Two holes, one through the adapter and one through the liner at least. Both filled with the screw hence instantly filling the holes.

Hey man that really helped, this video is 14 years old, I am watching it in 2024! Love it, simply love it. I do have a question or two... 1. What is acrylic sealant, any company that I can look up and order from? 2. Can we avoid glue on the back for the mouldings? so incase a panel needs to be replaced, we can pry open the moulding and replace them with new ones? That's something that I have seen in glass paneled doors/windows with mullions/muntins. Would appreciate any reply :) Cheers
@idostuffcouk7 ай бұрын
Hi, Now you are making me feel old. Just to note That door is still doing well and just having it's first repaint. The acrylic sealant is widely available in the UK, generically called frame sealant commonly used around door frames and windows. Yes the beading holding the panels in can be pinned (nailed) or even screwed on. However if you have built it well you shouldn't have to replace the panels (not in my life time anyway). Unlike glass it is highly unlikely to get broken.
