I've never quite understood the White Balance & Kelvin Color temperature and how it influences the quality of videos/pictures until now. I'm a visual learner so I appreciate the illustration. You have the ability to explain things clearly and effectively, making it understandable and useful for others. Keep up the good work! Thank you.

Wonderful video, explaining it in detail, thus the only problem (at least for me) is in remembering it all whilst in the field! I tend to use Auto 1 on my Nikon d750, where post can make any necessary adjustments, but I will try and adjust as needed and 'play' so to speak, to try and readily get a better understanding. Thanks!

Wait... IT'S THAT SIMPLE? I've been trying to understand what white balance actually means and why I should pay attention to it as I start making videos. This sealed the deal for me. I've been looking into a set of lights and was concerned that the color would be difficult to manage since they are daylight panels rather than bi-color. I want them, though, since they're much more powerful than their bi-color equivalent. It seems that a simple white balance setting adjustment will fix color issues, at least enough for what I need. Thank you so much for the explanation.

I'd love for you to do videos on the basics and fundamentals of different lighting scenarios from low budget to higher budget and from different scenarios that often repeat in various film productions. Super grateful for what you do already though!
@JussiTarvainen8 жыл бұрын
lensprotogo good point. I was thinking how you would light different scenes and why you would light them a certain way. You know different interview setups, dialog close ups, external and internal scenarios. Obviously this can take a tremendous effort and might be too much to do just for a tutorial. Maybe this could be done if you have bts footage of your own shoots or using cinedesigner. But also lighting breakdowns are super helpful too. You seem to be a very good teacher as you are able to explain things and break them down into small enough chunks which makes learning a lot easier. As you can probably tell from my unspecific questions that I'm at a beginner level in lighting and do t even know all the things I need to know so take it with grain and salt :)
@JussiTarvainen8 жыл бұрын
Can't wait Greg! Awesome, I'll check that out. No specific scenes in mind. I guess what I'm asking is to learn the fundamentals and some basic examples of lighting so I can get a start on lighting. Then progessively learn how to light scenes on my own and make my own judgements why I'd light them in a certain way :) Even if you know any good solid books on lighting would be great but video and 3D seem to be much more intuitive and easier ways to learn lighting while applying it. Yeah that video from Matt was fantastic, how to light on a shoe string budget :) Thank you for taking the time to reply Greg!

Great explanation of color temperature. "Kelvin" is not a unit of measurement. Color temperature is measured in DEGREES on the Kelvin scale. It's like saying "the temperature outside is 75 DEGREES Fahrenheit".

Thank you for this explanation, it was super helpful! I have a question: I want to shoot a short with the moonlight look. Would you recommend playing with WB to get a blue look in camera over a true accurate WB and then manipulating that image in the grade? Also, what is the use of using colored lights if you can manipulate normal lights in camera? Sorry for the long question :)

Such a cool way to display the affects of shifting White balance. I was wondering why you had so many lights lined up lol. Would a candlelit scene appear light bright white light if you white-balanced your camera to “candle”? If so, why would anyone want to make candles look white? 🤷🏾♂️😁
