I can't say I agree with the "cleric has to be a healer" thing. We played a lot of D&D in the 80s and never felt the need to have a dedicated "healer" or "tank" or anything else. I think that mindset comes from MMORPGs and it bled over into 3E, 4E, and Pathfinder. I don't think it's appropriate for anyone to force a character into a little box simply because they chose to play a particular class. That's not D&D.

I always saw the old school Cleric as more of a support unit and undead/demon hunter than a dedicated healer. They have healing spells because it's somewhat Biblical and fits the divine warrior archetype but their dedicated proprietary mechanic is Turn Undead.

Also the Cleric doesn't just "have" a level 1 spell. They can pray for a different one from their entire list of level 1 spells every single day. They would ideally pray for a spell they might think is useful for a particular adventuring day, whether it's Purify Food & Water or Cure Light Wounds. This would differ according to the terrain they're in and what they're doing.

I give all spellcasters extra slots equal to Int or Wis bonus per day. So a 17 Wis gives a cleric 2 extra spell levels per day to use as they see fit, from level 1.

@@smugzoid5156 Hey, from one middle school teacher to another -- keep being awesome! btw, when you run games for your kids, how do you sell them on OD&D vs 5e? I ran Shadowdark for mine, but they begged me to please do 5e, so I did. However, even though I didn't play OD&D back in the day (and I'm old enough to have done that), I really love the old school game better. I find if kids have any exposure to D&D, it's 5e, and they don't seem to enjoy the older versions. Thoughts?

Here's how I do 1st level HP. All characters get a HP "kicker" at 1st level. For martial classes they roll d20; semi-martial d16; non-martial d14. The CON modifier is added to this.

That would work. I try to make sure they can take three arrows before they drop. I don't like starting them right off a third level. So a CON + hitpoint roll works for me

I enjoyed, this video, I in my 70’s and play w/ my grand/kids-06-11-10. The six urs old always want play. I have no luck at finding a game that I leather 70 something got it buddy. Enjoyed your channel very much. And he liked your review of white box fantasy fantasy

Thanks so much. I am glad these simpler versions of D&D are being brought to light. I teach many new players the fun of the game using white box versions (white star, white lies, eldritch tales). Because they are all mechanically very similar, it makes it SO easy to switch between genres.

Just got invited to do a PbP of this so I ordered the rulebook but it hasn't arrived yet. But I'm planning on using it as the base for adapting The One Ring and I might even make White Box adventures out of HeroQuest stuff. Our go to game for the AD&D experience is Castles & Crusades, but this looks like a great option for a lighter experience. Even my OSE game has gotten overly cluttered with house rules, classes, etc.

@@smugzoid5156 Play by post. You run it through an online forum, but it's not in real time. so each person posts their actions in response to the DM's prompts. I've done it a couple times and it's not ideal, but it's something to do.

I love the cards... players keep them in their books, or journals and pretty much have the info memorized.

Glad you found it. I make all choices (like open a door, go left or right) based on a d6 dice roll. Works great. WB- FMAG is my go to game right now.

Wait, do the fighters literally get two attacks per level for all twenty levels? Or am I missing something?

I think it is just one attack for every level they are against 1HD or less monster. "Combat Fury" on page 14.
