White Emergency Traffic Light (Opticom Light)

The emergency traffic light, or Opticom Light, indicates an approaching emergency vehicle. A sensor on the front of ambulances and firetrucks will emit a frequency that causes the light to blink and turn the light green for the approaching emergency vehicle. A solid light means the vehicle is coming from the same direction as you, while a blinking light means it's coming from an opposing direction. It's important to always be alert when the white traffic light turns on, and watch for any approaching emergency vehicles.

I have installed hundreds of 3M Opticom's around the country and Meridian Township, MI is the only place I have heard that shares the function of the white spotlight with the public, these devices are to let the emergency vehicle operator know that the preemption priority system is on. Some city's may have a rotating becon installed and some city's don't have any system that lets the operator know that has been activated. Most of the systems I installed has a ''take over'' device that if two emergency vehicles are approaching from different directions the traffic signal will not be green, it will flash either yellow or red in all directions. Just thought Id'e pass it on.

@@nigelssurfshop I'm just curious, if an ordinary person gets their hands on an opticom system and uses it, would it even work? Or would there need to be some login system to allow its use? Seems like needing an account to be able to activate it would be a good idea. 😂

@@since1876 I had a disco strobe light that I purchased at Radio Shack in '82, I ran an extension cord from my garage to the sidewalk and pointed the strobe towards the intersection that had the Opticom system, and it worked! There is a floodlight mounted on the pole that comes on to let the operator of the emergency vehicle know the system is working, (that's how I knew) FYI, there is a backup system that if there are indications that another vehicle with an opticom activated coming from a different direction, all traffic lights will flash red, and no floodlight is activated.

@@nigelssurfshop I actually finally saw the emergency light yesterday. I saw a fire truck coming and decided to look at the traffic lights. All these years of driving and I just now noticed them now that I know what to look for lol I might have to try finding some sort of light to try it with. I'm sure it's only mildly illegal. If I do it on an empty road and get caught I can probably just tell the cop KZbin sent me.
