Today I went to NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown as a clueless white guy and got food and chatted with locals in the rare Chinese dialect of Fuzhounese. They were totally stunned!!! This is Part 2 of our Fuzhounese adventure in NYC’s Brooklyn Chinatown of Sunset Park (8th Avenue).
It was a really fun prank and social experiment to see Chinese people’s reactions - both the waiters and the other patrons in Sunset Park were totally shocked! Then we walked around in the Chinese New Year parade and chatted with vendors and other people in Fuzhounese and Mandarin; their reactions were hilarious as well!

I say those are all one thing because in learning one, you inevitably learn the others. The world needs more people like you, not less. I am glad and encouraged that I found your channel. Does Xiaoma inspire anyone else to learn another language? I've been learning Spanish for a few years now but after watching these i'm just really devoted to fine tuning it so much more, I love the reactions he gets they all seem very admirable towards him and i've been in similar situations but they normally question why I decided to learn their language and it goes without saying it's just a great thing to achieve and these videos

Xaioma had the best way to learn a language. He fully immerses himself in the language and culture. He goes to Chinese restaurants and shops and speaks with everyone. Not only does he order food or ask for prices but has a short conversation with them. He's not afraid of looking dumb when he doesn't understand something or doesn't know the word for it.

Kevin Liang you’re absolutely right, if you don’t go to those lengths and if you don’t use it everyday you can definitely lose practice, that’s an interesting point you just made, if I know they can speak English then I tend to be more nervous about using Spanish because if I start going back and forth between two languages I do feel a bit foolish but there are a lot of times where people can’t speak any English at all but I feel like those situations are a lot better for me because it means I really need to focus and make more of an effort, to me I see a lot of respect in it especially if we travel abroad and we’re a guest in their country it’s not fair to assume everyone will know English and it’s really not fair on them to expect them to speak English, I’ve overheard a lot of Americans complaining and even causing arguments because the locals don’t speak English which is a terrible attitude! Instead of arguing about it they really should at least learn to say “I’m sorry I don’t speak... Spanish, Chinese, Polish, etc..” in the foreign language! If I ever struggle with a conversation I have a lot of quirky sentences that would lighten the mood in the situation, I normally say to them in Spanish “sorry my Spanish is still a little rough around the edges, I probably make less sense than Kanye West 😅” and they seem to get a laugh out of it!
@ChrisSchieritz
@ChrisSchieritz 4 жыл бұрын
Berstich absolutely, I have a lot of friends who have moved abroad for work and they have quickly became quite fluent in the language by using it every day, plenty of practice is ideal especially if you have so many people to try it out with, whereas if we rely on books or apps then there’s still that barrier there that holds us back from a real engagement with another person!
