This video was requested by many. I hope you will find it useful!
I start with showing the palettes and talk about the main differences. In the second part of the video I show you swatches of (almost) all the colors in the sets side by side.
Bottom line: My choice would be the White Nights sets for various reasons, but both sets offer great quality and excellent value for money.
I will film another video showing my customized white nights palette.
As of the time of publishing, the Winsor & Newton Cotman studio set of 45 half pans is on sale at an excellent price on Amazon Germany-

I've used White Nights as my default palette for years but I've heard the Mission Gold set being raved around the internet so I've been curious. Thank you for the review. I paint with blues the most and Ultramarine is such an important color, I'm honestly surprised the set doesn't have a proper one.

I have paints from both of these and was also planning on doing a review of each of them when I get the chance. These two brands, to me, act very differently but are both excellent-ESPECIALLY for the price! I also prefer the palette from mission gold, because while it is also a giant studio palette, it’s slightly smaller and takes up less space as well as being easier to reach your paints. Actually, pretty much all of the points you brought up in this are things I agree with. Because these two paints perform differently but are both affordable, it would be hard for me to choose a favorite between the two. I actually just recommended both of these as an alternative in my Lukas review soooooo.... yes! Great paints! I think it’s interesting that you chose to specifically compare these two, but you did a great job and I hope your insights are invaluable to those looking into paints. =^.^=

Thanks for you comment! I totally agree that they are different, yet great value and great performence overall. I compared these 2 because they are what I have... I can't afford nor want to try every similar set offered by every brand out there, and these are such great options that are widely available around the world, so hopefully it will help people narrow down their wishlist ;)

Irit Landgraf ah, that totally makes sense! I went kind of....all out crazy when trying to find my way with watercolors and have SO MANY different ones that my eventual plan is to do thorough reviews on all of them to stop people from making the same uninformed mistakes that I made. =x.x= even if that means I’ll, sadly, have quite a number of videos where I desperately try to convince people not to get something. But white nights and mijello mission gold? Love them both! And have an extra soft spot for mission gold in my heart because it was the first good set I finally bought and immediately realized I’d made a mistake messing around with some other paints I’d tried. I think it’s wonderful that you managed to find two brands that you love (which I assume happened) without trudging through a ton of bad ones to get there!
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 6 жыл бұрын
oh don't worry I have bought enough watercolors to last me a lifetime and I use many brands, but as a one set for all purposes that is affordable with high performance, I feel these 2 are as good as it gets. Now if someone is interested in collecting watercolors, or wants to try many brands... well, that's a whole other story ;)

I just ordered the white nights thanks to this review. The biggest reason is that the paint seems less 'inky' and I am shy of blue paint. if that makes sense. I ended up buying the White Nights set on your recommendation and I was completely impressed with the color payout. I wish this was the first artist grade pallet I’d bought because it would have kept me happy for a long time. I ended up getting the 24 set and adding my own colors and I have 33. Three more colors to fill. I’ve only ever tried one mission gold color because of the price and already owning other tube paints(not high priority). I was wondering have you found any empty full pans that fit in this pallet because most don’t, only half pans.

omg this is the latest respond ever but I've been thinking about your comment and wanted to reply for ages now, lol! So till now the only ones I have that fit are the Winsor & Newton ones. I did empty a couple of the white nights colors I didn't like (I know, blasphemous) and filled those, so if you don't mind losing a few colors (I did that to those I knew there was no chance I'll ever use...) that would be an option :)

I bought the Mijello Airtight palettes, they are nor expensive, they have it on Amazon and at Jackson's art supplies in London. Funny thing, it's cheaper for me to buy from London and I am in Montreal. I bought some Sennelier tubes and some Schmincke (these one are hard to find here) in 5 ml and I am so happy with it 😊. And yes, I have listened to you again on You Tube with my morning breakfast ...it's a habit, so, don't skip a morning, pleeeeease, Irit ! Lol 😊

When I first started seriously considering working in WC, I bought two different White Nights sets, 24 in each. I used them for a short time, then went thru a dry spell of not painting at all for a long time, except to make the occasional greeting card or something similar. Now I’m working exclusively in watercolor, and I still have the White Nights palettes. I can’t quite say why, but I never really fell in love with them. I do like the packaging, I think the actual palettes are well made and sturdy. The pans are a nice size. The colors are mostly very pigmented. But they seem different than other watercolors to me and and I just don’t care for them.

Hello Irit, your videos are always so informative and inspiring. It seems your White Nights colors are very bright especially reds, I was wondering so because mine dull down when dry, compared to Mijello and Sennelier’s they are more natural, but just reds and pinks.... it’s a pity cause they are my most used colors :( but yours seems so bright and vivid, so I’m wondering if it’s my batch to be somehow defected. But I heard also other people complained that WN have massive drying shift :(

@@NikkiDraven Try if you can to use 100% cotton it makes a huge difference. I know it's expensive. I've had good luck with Bee paper, it's about half the price of Arches. Getting a full sheet and cutting it down helps.. you can get 16 5x7 sheets out of a full sheet. You can also paint on both sides of any internally sized paper. If you have to do pads get a larger one they are more cost effective for cutting down.. you get more small sheets for a few dollars more.

@@waymire01 thank you~~ I already use only cotton paper for the reason you wrote, still haven’t tested white nights’ reds properly on paper, it’s not natural for me to reach for them when I have both sennelier and mijello reds which are top in saturation, but I need to try on cotton anyway for you know.. science! 😂

what about the lightfastness from white nights? I began last year to paint with them and i like the strong colours but some of them are not transparent. Then i saw a review about lightfastness and and so i bought Mijello- and yes, they need ochs gall. Daniel Smith work very nice but i miss the perfect flow of two colous into each other, Sennelier(love the strong red!) is a great brand but only Artists colours are really nice, student colours are a bit to weak. Van Gogh work not bad they are low priced here in austria and have much pigments. Actually im waiting for my order of Blockx and i hope they work best! If the sun comes out i will test all brands on my south side window. Have anyone informations how all this brands of colours change in sunlight? i mean many brands have nice clours but how do they look after a year of sun exponation? The red from whitw nights is after one year only light pink! Sorry for my long comment and thanks for your videos!
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 4 жыл бұрын
If you search online for lightfastness tests you can find all kinds of information from private people that made their own tests. It's also worth to keep in mind that there's no reason your artwork will be in direct sunlight for a year. If you hang it on a wall that gets direct sunlight, you can use UV protected glass. Many well known artists use fugitive colors in their work, accepting the risk that in 50 or a 100 years the colors will change.

I like the White Knights myself. I do suggest that if you plan to travel with the White Knights paints, it is easier to secure the pans to the box with some blue tack. I took mine to Mexico and I could just envision some CSA guy pulling them out and spilling the pans all over the floor. I would have been pretty upset, so I just secured the pans to the box. With blue tack, you can always remove the pans later if you want to, and in a pinch, you can use a piece of blue tack as an eraser!

I don't have White Nights at the moment so can't really compare. But I have Mijello pure piment set and few other brands single tubes (M.Graham, Holbein, Cotman W&N, Schmincke). Compared to all the rest I just loooove Mijello. Amazing pigments, very saturated colours and the paint doesn't migrate too much which I like. It all depends what you are looking for. I love very strong colours so for me Mijello is a perfect set.

Hi I recently purchased the Mijello mission set shown above in the video At that point, I didn't check the mixtures of pigments, After this video and a little research I found out that the set has only 12- 13 shades with 1 pigment What is the downside/cons of having 2 pigments? I have used many colours with 2 pigments.... Can you please clear my doubt! Will it affect my lightfastness? I have seen 2 shades with 2 stars Please clear my doubt
@iritlandgraf
@iritlandgraf 3 жыл бұрын
Many artists use paints that are not single pigments and others prefer single pigments. It starts to interfere when there are lightfastness issues (which should only concern you, in my opinion, if you sell original artwork that is meant to last decades), then you should assume the paint has the lightfastness of the least lightfast pigment in it. It also interferes if you study color theory or with instructors that use specific colors and mixtures. The Mijello ultramarine in that palette has two pigments and will not behave like a regular ultramarine. If you understand color theory and color mixing you should be able to figure out when to use which pigment. Multi-pigment paints can make more muddy mixtures, which is bad if you don't want that or good if you do ;)

While I absolutely love how thorough your reviews are, of both palettes, I absolutely love Mijello's colors, as well. They're absolutely vibrant, and I think it's just color-preference-depending on what you want to do, and what you like to work with. I was having a difficult time listening to you talk down on Mijello's colors (besides the "minor" naming mishaps). Thank you, nonetheless.

I'm sorry to hear this was annoying for you! I was trying to be fair and I think I said a lot of good stuff about both brands. I agree the Mijello colors are lovely, but personally I prefer the White Nights set for the reasons I mentioned. As you said, to each his own! I thought it was important to mention those name mishaps because many might expect cerulean blue or cobalt blue to be a particular color, and I hate for them to spend money on something (as good as it is) that they didn't intend to get. Thanks for watching and commenting!

I don't find them particulary so. They are not Qor, but with enough water they perform very similarly to many of my other paints. Some pigments behave differently than others, in every brand, so it's more about a particular pigment and color as opposed to brand, IMO anyway.

you can see in the color to color comparison. Depends on the shade. Both are very pigmented.

Hi Irit, thank you for very useful video. I have the 36 White nights which I love very, very much but I have also buy The Mission Gold, the set of 24+2 pure pigments color in which you can find PB29 which they call Ultramarine light. They are gorgeous colors and they give you a guide to make 28 more colors by adding pigments to each other. And I made even many more ! Look at the pdf with all the possible colors to make on the Mission Gold here: www.mijelloart.com/pure-pigment-color-set.html I loved how you swatch your colors 😊

Thanks Chrissie! As I was doing the videos I wanted to mention the pure pigment set, but there was so much information that I forgot ;) But also that set costs a lot more than the two I review, and it doesn't come with a palette. I don't have it, but from my experience with the Mijello paints, I'm sure it's fantastic, and def a better option than their 36 tube set if price is not an issue. Thanks so much for watching and commenting! and lol, I am definitely a messy swatcher ;)

I'm just glad you knew that they exist in the Pure Color, in fact, a pure joy. But true, it's a little more expensive as they are pure pigments. And true, this is a comparaison between 36 pan and 36 tubes and I agree with you, the White Nights are a much better quality/price investment. I have some other excellent brands but I don't know why, I have a "sweet spot" for the White Nights palette. Keep on your good word, it's always fun to look at how you work. Usually, because of the jet lag between our two countries, I usually end up watching your videos while eating my cereals in the morning 😀

Hey! I love having my morning coffee with a good video, so glad to help your start of the day ;) I've seen The Mind of Watercolor set up his pure pigment set in the studio palette just like Mijello recommends, and it looks amazing, but yeah, double the price... I totally have a sweet spot for the white nights too. They are just gorgeous, and adding colors for 1.50 euros per full pan is amazing value...

Don't forget you get twenty four 15 mL tubes on the Pure Pigment set, tho (plus two 7 mL tubes). The White Nights pans contain 2,5 mL, so essentially you're getting 374 mL of paint on the Pure Pigment set versus the 90 mL of paint in a 36 pans set of White Nights. Even if you're paying almost double the price, you're getting over 4 times the amount of paint. I have both palettes and I love them both, but I lean more towards the Pure Pigment set because the pigmentation in the White Nights set is really inconsistent. You have beautifully pigmented colors like their Cadmium Yellows in contrast with colors like Cobalt and Cerulean blue, where it really looks like they skimped out in the pigment quantity. Still, I don't regret the purchase at all, and would recommend them both if money isn't a problem. lol

very good points! I'd probably say that for someone more serious about painting the pure pigment set seems like a great choice, definitely amazing value for money, but don't forget one needs also to buy a palette. The white nights set is less intimidating. also , switching a couple of colours in that set is really easy, and the great price allows for some experimentation with other brands if one desires. when I started out I found pans to be much friendlier, less intimidating and cheaper (less economical than tubes no doubt, but one can try out more colours for the same money ). thx so much for commenting!

White nights is waaaay cheaper here which is funny because we're near Korea and Russia is more than half way around the world from us. I have the mungyo 48 halfpans watercolor set (another korean brand) and the blues are so limited and Im not satisfied with it :/. But hey it's almost half the price of the mijello 36 set and the reds and pinks are so lovely (the greens are good too)

I mean ... my "classmates", before, at the academy, would even be reluctant to buy one, and when they do they'd buy a Sennelier, and now I'm .... practically just filling a bow of watercolor tins! how crae is this!This is due to Amazon, and I'm practically just following the "hype" - the american hype! rolfmao

RE ABERILLA I know! It’s an obsession for sure, and I’ve managed to join the group. Seriously one doesn’t need sets from multiple companies. I do love White Nights, my first professional pan set purchased years ago. I’d recommend them over Mission Gold, but either are a good purchase for those making the jump from a craft type to a professional set. I’m embraced to list the different pan sets I have. I will add Daniel Smith and Sennelier are my favorites. I favor Daniel Smith for their gorgeous colors, granulation, and quality. I favor Sennelier for beautiful soft washes. I use both Daniel Smith and Sennelier tubes verses purchasing their pans, just my preference. I did purchase a Sennelier pan set to start with years ago, and refill the pans.

Usually I have a hard time hearing you but this video makes me wish I could hear your other videos. Loved your comments. Over the last 4 years I have bought just about every watercolor out there including hand made paints. Some a complete waste of money, like cotman, van gogh and Turner. Would rather buy paint than eat. By the way, great diet. Haven't used watercolor for about 40 years and today's options are AMAZING. I love your honest evaluations, and use of Coptic markers for pigment information. I bought mission gold single pigment set then added others. When I am outside doing landscapes I am pleased with the convience landscape colors from m.graham. thanks again.

Thank you for your comment! You must have watched another video... I purchased these 2 sets not too far apart, so I don't know to which change you are referring. I count plenty of advantages of the Mijello set (like the palette, the color intensity, the pinks, the price, the quality). It's biased from the start because I it's my personal opinion of 2 sets I have in my possession and have used plenty of times, so yes, my opinion was formed already when I filmed this video. I was not biased prior to using either set.

I’m confused by this comment as well as I am watching this wondering ok, so she likes the White Knights? Wait now she’s loving the Mijello? I think she definitely went back and forth giving the good and bass of both. So, I’m not sure what change you are referring to.
