Used to work on lots of cast iron boilers like this. They are all tubular steel now. Cheap and quick to make. Standing pilot with thermocouple or millivolt generator was foolproof and dependable. The good old days. It worked even without power. Good video Steve. You and the baby dog are working to keep everyone warm this winter!

So the other company doesn't invest in equipment that would be very useful. Leave it to you ( old school ) to get to the root of the problem and SOLVE IT. I also love that you use paper notes, such a rarity anymore. As far as advertising anymore in the phone book, the phone book doesn't give you ratings and us old folk are living and working in a different era. I had the same issue with a Lennox once, burners where cracked. 300 bucks a month in gas usage before heater replacement 150 bucks now. Worth the cost of replacement.

good luck Steve,cleaning the burners and pilot assemble. have to clean the white soot off the in side of boiler.must ajust the pilot burner pressure on the gas valve.pilot light is proble to high. must be a justed down to light the ribbon speader on top of burners. so they light smoothly and evenly!!!!!! take to the next level please!!!!!

I have a Burnham boiler with exactly the same issue. Does this mean my pilot is set too high? Also, the last few days I notice when the boiler kicks in, a strong exhaust smell coming from the top of my water heater. The water heater exhaust pipe is attached to the furnace exhaust much like the one in this video. Does this suggest an obstruction further up?

In Italy we have efficiency test mandatory every 2 years, old gas units pre 1993 must still be over 85% efficiency or it gets shut off..

My old Hydrotherm has those heavy cast iron burners. This is a much better HB Smith boiler compared to the Smiths with the impossible to remove burners.

That sump system will work even if the power goes out because it can use the water main to siphon the water up and out of the basement.

I was always taught the white stuff is called creosote, which is a normal product produced in the combustion process and the black stuff is carbon usually because the unit is starved of air

Unfortunately I have a 35 yo HB Smith boiler that has the cheap tube gas pipes. Not all were so good. I don’t want to spend 10 grand for a combi boiler, 100,000 btu. They charged me 15 grand to install one ductless mini split system with three head units. And they did a shit job outside.
