The best description of this performance was from a comment I was reading that said.. "I've always felt that with Dolly Parton's original song, the message is that there is still a possibility she could keep her man from Jolene. Jack White performs the song as if it's already too late and that chills me."
@zellah2 жыл бұрын
Jack’s desperation is palpable. It’s beautiful.
@Xterraforce2 жыл бұрын
Being sung by a male without changing the lyrics it comes across to me as a man who is in a relationship with a bisexual man and losing him to Jolene. The pain and desperation coming from the fact he knows with his man becoming interested in the life he could have with this woman there's no way he can possibly compete. There's no chance of working things out and staying together.

I never heard this as Jack mocking anyone. To me, he's channeling the horrific pain of thinking you're going to lose the love of your life. He's pleading with everything he has, and almost breaking down doing so, that Jolene won't take his love away from him.

He's simply covering a song. He chose to stay true to the OG lyrics, which have the singer as a romantic partner to a man. He could have changed it around, as some do, but he didn't. He's not trying to sound female. He's not commenting on the other two people in the triangle. He's channeling what he thinks the non-Jolene person is feeling - the fear, the resignation, and then the ask.
@UnspecifiedHandle3 жыл бұрын
This cover gives me goosebumps every time. I've always thought Jack White's voice was meant to be frail and concedes Jolene has won the prize.
@Nvharri3 жыл бұрын
I feel in this version Jolene already took her man and she's begging to get him back. Jack's voice is raw like a woman having a breakdown. When he said my happiness depends on you it cuts like a knife versus Dolly's Jolene where she knows her husband has a crush and Jolene is just flirting.

They used to hang out at the same bookstore as me. One time she walked in wearing her red and white clothes and I told my buddy "do you know that chick is a famous rock star?". He didn't know of her so I went to the magazine rack to see if I could find a White Stripes article to show him. The first mag I looked at (Blender) had them on the cover! So he was really surprised that I wasn't kidding around 😁.

So true. My favorite drummers are the ones that have the giant kits with all the percussion around them, and the ones that have the most basic lean kits. I will never forget the first time I saw Carter Beauford (and all his snazzy sounds and bubblegum chewing... making it look like a stroll in the park with his giant kit surrounding him)... and Brad Wilks (beating the shit out of a basic kit, which I'm sure he was holding up his high hat with an eleventh toe).

Not sure you're right on the impersonation aspect guys. He's just trying to channel the absolute desperation of someone enthralled with another, knowing that at the flick of her hair, Jolene can take them away from you. I do see how his vocal style throws you, but a couple of listens and I think you'll get it.

One thing I love about their cover, is they didn’t rewrite the genders in the song. When you take such a familiar song and do that, the changes just stick out really harsh. This version tome sounds like Jack is having his heart ripped out of chest. So raw and emotional. The limited production of the White Stripes really strips the song down to the bare bones and brings out the emotions. I saw someone recommended “We Are Going To Be Friends”. Definitely try that one, it is so different to this one.
