@BillySBC
@BillySBC Жыл бұрын
@@shaveclassy9986 I guess it's not all that much, but baking soda is pretty cheap, I guess I would add one 1-pound box to 5 gallons of water maybe? Something like that should work well. If you add baking soda to vinegar you can actually watch it fizzle as it neutralizes the acid in the vinegar.

Restoring a car where ya think old rusty bolts are gone come back to like new. Great stuff. 🤙🤙 The flash rust waits for no man. 30 minutes tops before neutralizing. Hey Bryan, Great Low Cost Job - Well done!! As mentioned below by @billysbc118 and others here is that the Baking Soda solution is important to neutralise the microscopic vinegar residues in the grain of the steel. We normally use dilute phosphoric acid solution as it also converts the rust to Iron Phosphate and then follow up by 'passivating' with the Baking Soda solution and a plastic bristle brush with final rinse with lots of water. However I must say after seeing this that ordinary household vinegar cleans off rust way way better than I ever could have imagined!

Hey BW. I tried that on my Fargo and got a very stronge craving for some fish and chips 🐟🍟😊. That is looking good BW. I wouldnt drum sand that too much because you will get low stops and they will really show up when painted. What I did was put conditioner on the rust, then dody filed the bad spots and used high-build primer for the little pitting. Mine turned out good. But every job is different. Keep up the great videos Buddy.🍁👍👍

Pretty amazing how the vinegar worked. I am trying to find a way to remove surface rust off a vintage painted lamp from the 1950's. I managed to get the lighter stuff (before pitting) off with lite rubbing compound, but there's a few areas where it is more built up and you can feel the raised pitted rust. Not sure if I can use this method as I don't know what the white vinegar would do to the paint underneath. Perhaps if I applied it just on the pitted part with a Q-Tip and was very careful. Any suggestions are welcome. Great job on the hood and nice video. BTW: A good friend of mine used to own a body shop in Red Bank, NJ called Sanford's Auto Body (which was started by his dad). I saw your sign on the wall. Phil

You can NOT stop rust once it starts, grinding does not work using rust converter does not work. All these techniques only slow it down. Vinegar and all other acids may remove surface rust but it will always come back. The only way to get rid of it is to cut it out and replace the metal with unoxidized material or replace the panels and seal them to prevent air from coming in contact with the metal.

Use citric acid instead of vinegar. No stink and it is even stronger and faster than vinegar. It is very cheap if you order it from a supplier for the food industry. To get the heavy pitting rust free you have to apply the vinegar or citric acid longer - it can take up to a week if it is really heavy. To speed up the process scrub it with a wire brush daily to remove loosened rust. Don't be afraid that the acid will eat up the good metal. Within a week it will not do much to it being such weak acids.

Will it remove paint and primer all the way down to metal ?

No, you would have to use a stripper for that.

Bryan did you send that Hood before applying vinegar!
@bwsgarage
@bwsgarage 2 жыл бұрын
No, I only sanded to remove the one strip of rattle canpaint on center left side of hood. I did not sand before applying vinegar to the bare metal that was rusty. I let it sit about 18 hrs, the longer the better. Neutralize with baking soda and water when done wiping off rust. I was truly amazed how well it worked
